AirAsia | Destination China - Shantou
In the 19th century, Shantou was a bustling, cosmopolitan port town with a large foreign community. After years of economic woes, what's left are vestiges of its 19th-century prosperity, hidden under a layer of grit. Those willing to peel away that tough outer layer will be rewarded with beautiful island beaches, unique food and theater.

Former Residence of Chen Cihong 中国广东澄海陈慈黉故居
This splendid mansion is located at Chenghai District (澄海区), a short distance from the cities of Shantou (汕头) and Chaozhou (潮州) of China's Guangdong Province (广东省). It is presently a museum, displaying a curious but harmonious mix of east-west architectural influences, with eclectic decorative elements. Many of the decorative ceramic tiles are similar in aesthetic styles as those found in the old town of Malacca. A Peranakan link, perhaps?
This mansion was originally owned by Thai-based Chinese rice mechant Mr Chen Cihong (陈慈黉). Constuction work began in 1922, and spanned many years, but eventually halted during the invasion of the Japanese in 1939.
Despite the passing years, the structural state of this cluster of buildings remains in very good shape, and the aesthetic elements are generally well preserved. Definitely worth a visit!

Cultural Revolution Museum at Risk

Like us on FACEBOOK:
It has been 45 years since Mao launched
the Cultural Revolution - ten years of calamity.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP)
admits the movement brought disasters to China.
But China's first Cultural Revolution Museum
faces difficulties and an uncertain future.
The CCP lends no support, only pressure.
The first citizen-run Cultural Revolution Museum
is located in Shantou city, Guangdong province.
After years of preparation, Peng Qi'an, former
deputy mayor, opened the museum in 2005.
It's China's first Cultural Revolution Museum.
The museum records true stories and tragedies,
and has attracted media attention.
The gate to the museum has the inscription:
Take lessons from history to never again allow
the tragedy of Cultural Revolution.
Hong Kong-based Mingpao reported
that the museum faces many pressures
and difficulties, and it is now rather neglected.
Local authority has not recognized the museum,
and may charge it illegal at any time.
Official maps do not show the museum,
nor are there road signs to it.
The visitor guide only marks it as The Museum.
It seems that such is the fate
of the Cultural Revolution Museum.
Peng Qi'an, curator of the museum, is in his 80s.
He said the authorities dare not give the museum
an official name, making its operation difficult.
He is concerned about the museum's future.
He said, I don't have much time left,
and I hope this spark does not die out.
Writer Zhu Jianguo, who has visited the museum,
said to RFA that Peng is under pressure.
The CCP has judged the Cultural Revolution
to be a turmoil, but hasn't built its museum.
On the contrary, the CCP gives no support
for the museum that is run by citizens,
but puts pressure on it. Why?
Zhu Jianguo said that the CCP
does not really negate the Cultural Revolution.
After the CCP made the judgment of turmoil,
it discovered that negating Cultural Revolution
was to negate the CCP's base of existence.
In the end, the CCP started to protect Maoism.
For years the CCP censors publications
on the Cultural Revolution,
suppressing people involved.
In recent years, the red wind has returned,
promoting the main tune and red songs.
Chongqing city has opened a red channel.
Leftist ideas from Utopia website
have spread rapidly, glorifying Maoism.
It's as if another Cultural Revolution is to come.
Peng Qi'an is concerned. He said that the soil
that grew Cultural Revolution still exists,
and leftist revolutionary notions are spreading.
Chenghai district, where the museum is located,
was heavily hit during the Cultural Revolution.
More than 100,000 people were affected,
with over 400 deaths and 4,500 people injured.
Peng Qi'an was labeled a capitalist
and suffered from over 300 criticism meetings.
He was on the death list,
and his brother Lin Huazeng was beaten to death.

Shantou's economy is medium by Guangdong standards. Manufacturing accounts for a large and increasing share of employment. Canning, garments, lithography, plastic, and toys are some of the principal products. Toy manufacturing is the city's leading export industry, with 400 million U.S. dollars worth of exports each year.
Guiyu, a populous town in Chaoyang District, is the biggest electronic waste site on earth.[20] Health-environmental issues incurred have concerned international organisations such as Greenpeace.
In 2000, the biggest tax fraud in the history of the People's Republic of China was uncovered, estimated worthy of 32.3 billion yuan.
Shantou, formerly romanized as Swatow[1] and sometimes known as Santow,[2] is a prefecture-level city on the eastern coast of Guangdong, China, with a total population of 5,391,028 as of 2010 and an administrative area of 2,064 square kilometres (797 sq mi). Shantou has direct jurisdiction over six districts and one county, and the six urban districts of Shantou have a population of 5,330,764. With it and the surrounding cities of Jieyang and Chaozhou, the metropolitan region known as Chaoshan covers an area of 10,404 km2 (4,017 sq mi), and had a permanent population of 13,937,897 at the end of 2010. It's built up area spread of 11 districts was home to 11,635,577 inhabitants at the 2010 census.[3]
Shantou, a city significant in 19th-century Chinese history as one of the treaty ports established for Western trade and contact, was one of the original Special Economic Zones of the People's Republic of China established in the 1980s, but did not blossom in the manner that cities such as Shenzhen, Xiamen and Zhuhai did. However, it remains eastern Guangdong's economic centre, and is home to Shantou University, a member of the Project 211 group.
