Dali: Seat of a Lost Empire (Yunnan: The China You Never Knew, episode 4)
Episode four of Yunnan: The China You Never Knew is available now! Explore one of China's most beautiful and intriguing places: Dali.
Host Jordan Porter travels to the ancient city of Dali to learn about its millennia-long history, takes in its iconic pagodas and learns how cultural traditions from different ethnicities have fused over time.
Jordan starts off by sampling raw pork – a local specialty – before cruising around Erhai Lake on a shiny BMW motorcycle. He also visits the stunning Three Pagodas and then learns how hand-made tie-dye remains an enduring hallmark of the villages and towns dotting the beautiful Dali plain.

In Yunnan Province, Women Are in Charge Of the Roads
In the remote mountain area in Dehong prefecture, Yunnan province, People's Republic of China (PRC), women are in the unusual role of maintaining the condition of the roads. The Yunnan Integrated Roads Network Development Project is helping to build community-based women’s groups responsible for maintaining the condition of rural roads near their villages. The road maintenance group consists of 5 to 6 women who are paid based on the number of days they work. The maintenance teams are formed from Dai, Jingpo, De'ang, and Han ethnic groups and even from one of China's smallest ethnic minorities, the Achang. The project gives women confidence and improves their status in the family.
The Asian Development Bank aims for an Asia and Pacific free from poverty. Approximately 1.4 billion people in the region are poor and unable to access essential goods, services, assets and opportunities to which every human is entitled.
