Francois Peron National Park Part 1/3 - Shark Bay Western Australia
My Week touring exploring and camping around Shark Bay and the Francois Peron National Park.
This is one in the EZY touring series.
Shark Bay starts here from the Overlander 17:40
From Wikipedia
Francois Peron National Park is a national park on the Peron Peninsula in Western Australia, 726 km north of Perth, and located within the boundary of the Shark Bay World Heritage area. The nearest towns to the park are Denham, which is found on the southern edge of the park and Carnarvon which is found about 80 kilometres (50 mi) to the north.
Aboriginal Australians were the initial inhabitants of the area and have been living there for over 26,000 years. The local peoples who speak the Malgana language call the area Wulyibidi.[2]
It is named after the French naturalist and explorer François Péron who was the zoologist aboard Nicolas Baudin's 1801 and 1803 scientific expeditions to Western Australia, and is situated within the bounds of the earlier pastoral lease of the Peron Station.
Locations from the French exploration era include:
Guichenault (east coast of the Peron Peninsula)
Cape Lesueur (west coast of the Peron Peninsula)
Lake Montbazin
A pearling camp was established on the peninsula at Herald Bight in the 1880s and the remains of the shells can still be found along the beach.
Used as a sheep station from the early 1900s onwards the station was sold to the state government in 1990.
It was gazetted on 8 January 1993 as a National Park – through the purchase of Peron Station (Pastoral Lease 3114/761) in 1990.

Today we spent some of the day on one of the strangest beaches I have ever been on - Shell Beach. Purely made up of billions of cockle shells it was a weird (and uncomfortable) sight.

Just a few reasons why you should get out and explore Shark Bay!
Arrival in Shark Bay - Western Australia
Travel to Shark Bay - AUSTRALIA : AWSM S01E27
Shark Bay is roughly 8 hours north of Perth in the Northern portion of Western Australia. It's a scrub desert with red and yellow hues that contrast beautifully to the aqua blues and greens of it's crystal clear bay system waters. Wildlife includes kangaroos, emus, dugongs (manatees) stingrays and sharks. Another sort of wildlife anamoly is the Stromatolites of Hamelin Pool near the parks entrance, they are the worlds oldest living fossils living in the extra saline portion of Shark Bays inland most point, though not particularly impressive to look at. Denham is the main town/civilization in the area for gas/food/accomadation. I used a rental car to get there from Perth and traverse the park area. Unfortunately, the entire area was swarming with flies, which didn't bite but were so numerous and annoying it ruined being outside of a car or building for any length of time. That is rare but see if you can time your trip so you avoid the possibility of this, Shark Bay is gorgeous otherwise!
