Shenandoah River State Park, Virginia
Shenandoah River State Park is located along 5 miles of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, near Bentonville in Warren County, northern Virginia. The 1600 acre park features access to the river as well as awesome views of Massanutten Mountain to the west and Shenandoah National Park to the east. It's a great spot for hiking, kayaking or canoeing, fishing, camping, or just a family picnic.
I visited the park on a very blustery cold, January day. With some fresh powder snow on the ground, I stopped by the Visitor Center and made the short and easy hike up to Cullers Overlook, the main view in the park. Afterwards, I drove down to the picnic area to check out the river access. Thanks for watching!

Spring Break 2019 in Shenandoah National Park
Spring Break 2019 in Shenandoah National Park
We camped in the Shenandoah River Valley at the State Park, and took several day trips exploring Shenandoah National Park. I would highly recommend hiking there, especially since there's trails available for all skill levels, and it's beautiful there (even in the spring before everything has greened up fully).

The Shenandoah River
A short video about the Shenandoah River in Virginia and West Virginia. A popular river for rafting, boating and fishing.
4 Essential Stops in SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK [4K]
in this video, I talk about my 4 favorite things to do in Shenandoah National Park, VA. This beautiful national park lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, about 75 miles west of Washington DC. The park is over a hundred miles long and as you could imagine, there are countless activities to do within this park.
This video was taken in the end of April, so you can really see which trees have leaves and which do not. As we hiked or drove down from Skyline drive, even just 900 feet would be enough to completely transform.
Additional Notes:
SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK
General:
One of the few national parks on the east coast
Established in 1935
Home to the famous SKYLINE DRIVE which is 105 miles long
Virginial mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian mountain range), just 75 mi outside of Washington DC,
Land acquired through eminent domain. There is a long story there including claims of embellished claims local inbreeding
Parts of the park was used to train troops for WW2
5 campgrounds (some are first come first serve, and others allow reservations when in season)
3 lodges/cabins
9 major waterfalls to hike in and see – tallest one is 91 ft, but there are countless smaller ones along every creek
ROSE RIVER FALLS TRAIL / DARK HOLLOW FALLS:
Start at mile 49.4
Moderate difficulty, 4 mi, 910 ft elevation change
Hike clockwise to go down the rocky side (relatively easy) and then up the gradual fire road
You will also see Dark Hollow falls at the bottom and you can optionally add a quarter mile to hike up that waterfall
Cemetery on the way back
SKYLINE DRIVE
105 miles long, spanning the entire park
More than 75 overlook
Countless overlooks and pull offs to get the best view on the east or west side.
I recommend stopping at these all day to see amazing views, at sunrise, at sunset, and pull over to take a look at the stars at night
HAWKSBILL SUMMIT – start on Skyline drive pull off mile 45.5
1.7 mi round trip – which means you go up 520 ft
Very rapid ascent
Birds nest 2 – you can see Old Rag Mountain on your right
OLD RAG MOUNTAIN
You need to drive out of the park to get here
This does still require the park entrance fee, so be sure to stop and pay, or show them your pass
7.5 hrs (we did it in 6)
2380 ft elevation gain
Very strenuous – includes rock scrambling
9.2 mile circuit
Birds Nest 1 resides here – and you can see Hawksbill from the summit

Canoe Camping in Virginia - 4 Days on the Shenandoah River
Come along for 4 days of canoe camping on the Shenandoah River.
For this adventure, we did some old school canoe camping along the banks of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, just outside of Bentonville, Virginia...
For easier reading, check out the full blog post on my website here:
Since none of us own a canoe, we dropped by the Downriver Canoe Company and picked up a couple of rentals. They got us all geared up, went over some maps and legal dispersed camping options on the George Washington National Forest side of the river, private property to avoid, and even some camping spots that they maintain and make available for reservation and rental. We decided to opt out of the designated pay sites, and instead find out what we could discover ourselves in the National Forest. A link to their website is below for those interested. Our experience with them was very positive. So much so that my wife and I actually went back a couple of month later for another trip to celebrate my birthday (I didn't film that trip, but it was a great time!)
As mentioned previously, when heading down river, a good portion of our route was flanked on the left side by George Washington National Forest. This gave is some solid options for free, legal camping without the need for any permits or advanced registration. For those of you interested in other options though, there are plenty of private pay campsites right along the river. Many of which you can even drive right up to. There's also a state forest that has camping available, but you have to reserve a designated spot in advance, instead of just pulling up on shore and setting up camp like we did in the GWNP. We preferred this for a more secluded feeling of having the woods to ourselves, scouting out a decent campsite, collecting wood etc.
We did around 25 lazy miles or so on this trip. A bit of fishing, a bit of lounging and wading, and a whole lot of good times. In fact, if you've ever been to Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, then you've probably seen the stretch of river that we did. It's the distinct, winding s-turn shaped river that you see looking down from may of the overlook areas along the scenic drive.
Oh, and speaking of fishing, just a quick note on that - While there's some good, fun fishing in the Shenandoah River, consuming any fish from it is not recommended, due to discharge of industrial mercury to this part of the Shenandoah Valley by some unscrupulous company's back in the 1930's to 1950 or so. So yeah, catch and release is the way to go.
On the upside, on of the cool things about canoe camping is all the cool food you can bring and cook. With the help of a cooler and a boat to carry the weight instead of our backs, we were able to bring all kinds of fun camp food like steaks, bratwurst, eggs and bacon for breakfast, etc. Oh, yeah, and a couple domestic beers.
Speaking of coolers and such, we found it easiest to not bother killing ice trying to keep our beverages cold. Instead, we just chilled each nights libations right in the river, submerged in an old duffle bag. We reserved cooler space primarily for perishable food items. This limited the amount of times that we had to go in and out of the coolers, as well as the amount of ice needed. For the main food cooler, containing items we didn't want to get wet, I simply froze a 2.5 gallon water jug. That's the brick shaped style with the spout. It fit perfectly in the bottom of my cheap igloo cooler, and lasted until the third day. By then our perishable items were consumed, and as an added bonus, we had 2.5 gallons of clean drinking water.
All in all, it was a great trip, with great friends. I couldn't have asked for more.

Lower Falls on Staunton River in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
Graves Mill area in Shenandoah National Park, Madison County, Virginia. This is another short hike in one of my favorite places to visit in Madison County, Virginia. I stop here almost every time I'm in the area. I start my hike at the Graves Mill access area of Shenandoah National Park, a small parking lot along the Rapidan River near Wolftown. The hike begins on the Graves Mill Trail, which runs parallel to the river. I continue this trail until it reaches the confluence of the Rapidan and the Staunton River, which despite the name is more like a creek than a river. It is a short hike upstream following the Staunton River to a nice cascading waterfall with a pool below the falls. As far as I know the falls themselves are not named. There are numerous cascades, waterfalls, and swimming holes all along this creek; however, today I did not have much time and I turned around after viewing the first waterfall. Thanks for watching!
