Sher Mandal, Purana Qila, Delhi: Where Mughal Emperor Humayun had a tragic death
Sher Mandal is in Purana Qila, Delhi, India. Its original builder was Mughal Emperor Babur who ordered the construction of the building to use it as a personal observatory and library for his son Humayun, It is named after Sher Shah who occupied the fort after Babur and even tried to complete the construction. But the structure remained incomplete because of the tragic death of Sher Shah in 1545 during the siege of Kalinjar Fort by gunpowder explosion. Finally, it was completed by Emperor Humayun. It is one of the first observatories of Delhi. The tower is topped by an octagonal Chhatri supported by eight pillars and decorated with white marble in typical Mughal style. Inside, there are remnants of the decorative plaster-work and traces of stone-shelving where, presumably, the emperor's books were placed. This is the spot where, on 20 January 1556 Humayun fell from the second floor to his death. He slipped while hastening to the evening prayers, following his hobby of astronomical star gazing at the top of this private observatory. He fell headlong down the stairs and died of his injuries three days later. Entry inside the library is now prohibited.
Sher Mandal, double-storied octagonal building at Purana Quila in Delhi
Sher Mandal, located inside Purana Quila was built on the recommendation of Babur by Farid (Sher Shah) for his son Humayun and so the name was kept Sher Mandal. ‘Sher Shah’ had tried to finish the building but he died during the construction progress and the work was later completed by Mughal ruler Humayun who in turn, completed the monument. The Building was built originally as a personal observatory and library for Humayun from where he fell down from second floor and died. The monument is a double storied octagonal tower of Red sandstone with steep staircase leading up to the roof. It is also one of the first observatories of Delhi. The tower is topped by an octagonal chhatri supported by eight pillars and decorated with white marble in typical Mughal style. Inside the monument are the remnants of the decorative plaster work and traces of stone shelving where, presumably, the emperor’s books were kept.
Sher Mandal inside the Purana Qila in New Delhi
The Sher Mandal named so after Farid (sher shah) who had tried to finish what was orderd by Babur but had died during the initial phase and so construction was halted until the arrival of Humayun.
This double-storeyed octagonal tower of red sandstone with steep stairs leading up to the roof was intended to be higher than its existing height. Its original builder was Babur who orderd the construction and was used as a personal observatory and library for his son Humayun, finished only after he recaptured the fort. It is also one of the first observatories of Delhi, the first being in Pir Gharib at Hindu Rao at Ridge built in 14th century by Firoz shah Tughlaq. The tower is topped by an octagonal chhatri supported by eight pillars and decorated with white marble in typical Mughal style.
Inside there are remnants of the decorative plaster-work and traces of stone-shelving where, presumably, the emperor's books were placed.
This was also the spot where, on 24 January 1556 Humayun fell from the second floor to his death. He slipped while hastening to the evening prayers, following his hobby of astronomical star gazing at the top of this private observatory. He fell headlong down the stairs and died of his injuries two days later. Entry inside the library is now prohibited.
Purana Qila, is the oldest fort among all forts in Delhi and, the oldest known structure of any type in Delhi. It was re built by the Afghan king Sher Shah Suri, on the same site, which was perhaps the site of Indraprastha, believed to be the capital of the Pandavas, Sher Shah raised the citadel of Purana-Qal'a with an extensive city-area sprawling around it. It seems that the Purana-Qal'a was still incomplete at Sher Shah's death in 1545, and was perhaps completed by his son Islam Shah or Humayun, although it is not certain which parts were built by whom. It's located at the site of the legendary city of Indraprastha, that was founded by Pandavas on the banks of perennial river Yamuna, which is revered by Hindus since ages, points to the possibility of this site's history dating back to nearly more than 5000 years old. Consequently the fort is considered by some, to be 'the first city of Delhi'. Researchers now confirm that uptill 1913, a village called Indrapat existed with in the fort walls. Excavations carried out by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) at Purana Quila in 1954-55 (trial trenches) and again 1969 to 1973 by its Director, B B Lal have unearthed Painted Grey Ware dating 1000 B.C., and with a continuous cultural sequence from Mauryan to Mughal through Sunga, Kushana, Gupta, Rajput and Sultanate periods, confirming the antiquity of the fort.

Humayun's tomb is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun. The tomb was commissioned by Humayun's first wife and chief consort, Empress Bega Begum (also known as Haji Begum). Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son, Sayyid Muhammad, Persian architects were chosen for this monument. It was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent, and is located in Nizamuddin East, Delhi, India. Humayun died in 1556 at Sher Mandal, Purana Qila. The construction began in 1565, nine years after his death, and completed in 1572 AD at a cost of 1.5 million ruppees at the time. Around 150 Mughals are buried in this complex. The complex encompasses the main tomb of the Emperor Humayun, which houses the graves of Bega Begum herself, Hamida Begum, and also Dara Shikoh, great-great-grandson of Humayun and son of the later Emperor Shah Jahan, as well as numerous other subsequent Mughals, including Emperor Jahandar Shah, Farrukhsiyar, Rafi Ul-Darjat, Rafi Ud-Daulat, Muhammad Kam Bakhsh and Alamgir II.

The Purana Quila or the old fort is one of the most captivating tourist sites that narrate the history of Delhi in details. Constructed by the Mughal emperor – Humayun, the Purana Quila is evidence to the glory of the Mughal art. The Purana Quila is situated in New Delhi and is said to guard the ruins of the city of Indraprastha that is mentioned in the Mahabharata.
The Purana Quila is another reminder of the bygone Mughal era which excelled in architectural styles. The Purana Quila has three majestic gates:
The Humayun Darwaza
The Bara Darwaza
The Talaqi Darwaza
The three gates are double storied and built with red sandstone. The Humayun Darwaza and the Bara Darwaza were the two gates that were open for entry inside the old fort. Entry was prohibited through the Talaqi Darwaza as the name suggests.Talaqi means ‘forbidden'
The other two attractions at the fort site are:
Qila-I-Kuhna Masjid,
Sher Mandal
the small museum
The Qila-I-Kuhna Masjid was built by Sher Shah when he had captured the Purana Quila after defeating Humayun in 1541. The prayer hall is the most imposing part of the masjid that has five doorways with horse shoe shaped arches. The original plans of building the entire place with marble was jeopardized due to supply shortage. But the fusion of marble and sandstone has given the masjid a unique style.
The Sher Mandal is now an observatory, octagonal in shape. The structure and style of the building suggests that the Sher mandal was built for entertainment purposes. The style and design of the building proves a definite coupling of the Muslim and Hindu architectural magnificence. When Humayun recaptured the Purana quila from Sher shah's son, he used the Sher Mandalas his own library.
The museum at the gate of the Purana Quila has many artifacts recording the beginning and end of a glorious era of the Mughal period.

The Purana Quila or the old fort was constructed by Humayun and Sher Shah. The old fort complex covers an area of about a mile. The walls of Purana Quila have three gates (the Humayun Darwaza, Talaqi Darwaza and Bara Darwaza) and are surrounded by a moat, which was fed by river Yamuna. The double-storied gates of the Purana Quila are quite massive and are built with red sandstone. The walls of the old fort are said to be built by Humayun while the buildings in the old fort are attributed to Sher Shar, the Sur ruler. Of all the surviving buildings in the old fort complex, the Sher Mandal and the Quila-i-kunha Mosque are notable. The Sher Mandal was built by Humayun. It is a two storied octagonal tower, used by Humayun as his library. The Quila-I-kunha Mosque is an example of Indo Islamic architecture. The unique features of Indo-Islamic architecture like molding, bracketed openings, marble inlay, carving etc are very prominent in the structure. The prayer hall of the Quila-i-Kunha mosque measures 51.20m by 14.90m and has five doorways with the 'true' horseshoe-shaped arches. The mehrabs (prayer niches) inside the Quila-i-Kunha mosque are richly ornamented with concentric arches. The mosque has an inscription which says 'As long as there are people on this earth, may this edifice be frequented, and people be happy in it.Excavations have revealed that the Purana Quila or the old fort stands at the site of Indraprasta, the capital of the Pandavas. Excavations near the eastern wall of the fort show that the site had been occupied since 1000 B.C.
