Shetland Textile Museum
The Shetland Textile Working Museum is operated by the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers and is housed in one of Lerwick's many historic buildings, the Böd of Gremista. The museum holds important historic textile collections and a growing reference library as well demonstrations and workshops.
The 18th century fishing böd which houses the textile museum was the birthplace of Arthur Anderson, the Shetland philanthropist who co-founded the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, better known today as P&O. His story is told in the building using artefacts from Anderson's time.
The museum is open from May - Sept and entrance is free, donations welcome.

Single Shot Scotland - Sunrise at Lerwick Harbour
At the crossroads of the North Sea and North-east Atlantic, Lerwick’s modern harbour is Britain’s ‘top’ port and the most northerly working harbour in the country. The deep-water port sees over 5,000 vessels berth and depart from the harbour each year, bringing in essential supplies as well as delicious fresh seafood and produce that you can find in local restaurants and bars.
Lerwick is Shetland’s main town and is a gem in itself. With a proud maritime heritage, the town has blossomed into the bustling port we know today, which brings in trade, business and visitors to the isles. Visit the museum and learn about the archives and rich heritage of Shetland, wander along the harbour for spectacular views, explore Shetland Textile Museum to admire tweed, craft and knitwear from local artists, and head to the local brewery for a dram or two.

50 Tips from Shetland knitters
There are a lot of places to get knitting lessons and workshops but very few opportunities to learn from two expert Shetland knitters, Hazel Tindall and Elizabeth Johnston.
Hazel and Elizabeth were born and brought up in Shetland. They grew up watching knitters who needed to knit quickly to produce high quality knitwear for sale. Between them they have about 120 years of knitting experience.
At workshops they are often asked the same questions, for example “can you show us how you knit”, “how do you hold the yarn”, “how do you hold the needles”, “how do you knit with two colours”? Demonstrating in response to the questions can be done for only a few people at a time which eats into the workshop time. Consequently they decided to put together a film firstly to answer the frequently asked questions, then added other useful information which it is not possible to include in a three hour workshop. This film runs for over 3½ hours, and contains only relevant material for the knitter who wants to know more and learn different ways of achieving perfection.
This film gives you clear shots of the knitters’ hands as they work their magic with needles and yarn, and there is almost certain to be at least one new thing to learn (as they made the film, both Elizabeth and Hazel learned from each other).

Susan Crawford on the Vintage Shetland Project
A conversation with Susan Crawford during the writing of The Vintage Shetland Project.
- I sat down with Susan Crawford a few years ago to talk about the book she was working on, which was recently published. Some things have changed about the project since we had this conversation, but I hope you'll find it interesting.

Shetland oo
This video celebrates the launch of a new book created by my friends Kate Davies and Tom Barr. Their freshly published tome, Shetland oo : wool , textiles , work, celebrates the lives and labour behind Shetland's world-class wool industry. With words by Kate Davies and photos by Tom Barr, the book promises to be an amazing celebration of Shetland and the incredible people who live there and who work with da oo*.
I travelled to Shetland myself to do a documentary project called Listening to Shetland Wool; I thought that on the occasion of the launch of Shetland oo, it might be nice to bring the sounds that I recorded in Shetland together with the photos that Tom took there.
The photos and sounds in this video document include:
Jan Robertson baling wool (Shetland Woolbrokers)
Oliver Henry talking about grading and sorting wool (Shetland Woolbrokers)
Ronnie Eunson's sheep (Shetland Organics)
Sheep at Nortower Lodges (Nortower Lodges)
Elizabeth Johnston handspinning (Shetland Handspun)
Hazel Tindall knitting with a belt (The Fine Art of Fair Isle Knitting)
Kharis Leggate and Ella Gordon (Shetland Woolbrokers; Home is an Island; Ella Gordon Designs)
Ina Irvine handspinning (Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers & Dyers)
Auctioneer and crofters at the Shetland Marts (Shetland Livestock Marketing Group)
Knitting machines at the Shetland College UHI
These are just some of the amazing people and businesses working with Shetland Wool in 2016. You can see and read about more of them in the book, Shetland oo : wool , textiles , work, and you can hear more examples of the sounds of Shetland wool by searching online for the project Listening to Shetland Wool by Felicity Ford.

Mati Ventrillon-Fair Isle Knitwear
Fair Isle Knitwear has been produced in Fair Isle, Scotland for more than 200 years, centuries-old skills passed from mother to daughter. But, where dozens of women once knitted into the night, only a few knitters remain on an isolated island still untouched by North Sea oil's influence on Shetland. Mati Ventrillon is one of those still crafting Fair Isle's spirit and soul into their garments. Each piece reflects this heritage.
Inspired by tradition and crafted for life: the Mati Ventrillon brand aligns authentic Fair Isle knitwear traditions with Mati's journey and gives the brand its unique identity.
