Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Tokyo in 4K ???? 新宿御苑 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Shinjuku Gyoen is one of Tokyo's most famous gardens, but is so large you feel like you are no longer in Tokyo. See why here.
Shinjuku Gyoen has 3 distinct gardens as well as many other places to explore. It is very large and takes time to see it all. If you are short of time, the best area by far is the traditional Japanese garden, including the famous Goryo-tei, which was done by Japanese in Taiwan for the Emperor in 1927 - which naturally has a distinctly Chinese appearance. In addition, there is a French garden with roses blooming in season, and an English landscape garden, which is just a large empty lawn. You can also find a sizable greenhouse, but it was so steamy and humid that my lens fogged up the instant I took off the lens cap, so there is little to show here.
Shinjuku Gyoen has over 20,000 trees spread out over 58.3 ha (144 acres), including about 1500 cherry trees, and around 1700 plants in its greenhouse.
Shinjuku Gyoen is closed Mondays (if a holiday, then the next day) except during big flower seasons like cherry blossoms and chrysanthemums (Mar 25-April 24, and Nov 1-15) as well as closed Dec 29-Jan 3rd; it is open 9 AM-4:30 PM (last entry 4 PM). Admission is 200 yen.
Note: From March 2019 the admission fee will increase to 500 yen, and the garden hours will be lengthened from Mar 19-Jun 30 until 6 PM, from July 1 to Aug 20 until 7 PM, and from Aug 21 to Sep 30 until 6 PM.
Shinjuku Gyoen is just a short walk from Shinjuku-Gyoemmae Stn on the Marunouchi Line, or Sendagaya Stn on the Chuo-Sobu Line, or Shinjuku-Sanchome Stn.
The official website is at:
Please note that there is no booze allowed in the park.
Besides Shinjuku Gyoen, Tokyo has a dozen very beautiful traditional gardens. You can see a lot more on the Tokyo Gardens Playlist:

Shinjuku Gyoen is one of the most popular parks in Tokyo, and a relaxing place to get away from the city for a few hours. Elegant Japanese gardens, ponds, bridges, trees and green spaces perfect for a picnic.
Shinjuku Gyoen is right by Shinjuku Station, the busiest station in the world, but you'd never know. It's such a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the gardens.
If you ever get the chance to go to a Japanese bakery, I'd definitely recommend it! They have so many cute and delicious treats, like this amazing turtle melon pan. Honestly I wanted to try everything in there!

Shinjuku Gyoen - Tokyo - 新宿御苑 - 4K Ultra HD
Credited as one of the most beautiful parks in Tokyo, Shinjuku Gyoen is definitely another place to enjoy when visiting Tokyo. The garden was completed in 1772 and was the original residence of the Naitō family during the Edo era.
It became a botanical garden in 1906 until it went through a complete reconstruction in 1949. Unfortunately you must pay a small entry fee to access Shinjuku Gyoen but it features many interesting activities. These include a French formal garden, an English landscaped garden with a stunning view of Shinjuku and Tokyo Tower, a greenhouse, a tea house, and a traditional Japanese garden. Last but not least, the park is home to and four magnificent ponds : Shimo no Ike, Naka no ike, Kami no ike and Haha to ko no mori.
Shinjuku Gyoen is just a gorgeous park and you will need several hours to fully enjoy it alone or with your loved ones!

SHINJUKU GYOEN NATIONAL GARDEN/CHERRY BLOSSOMS/JAPAN
The Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a beautiful place to admire Japan’s cherry blossoms. This magnificent botanical garden is only a five minute walk from the train station and it’s a wonderful place to take young kids to run and play. The garden is approximately 144 acres and has four different sections with different types of plants and trees. We were only able to see a portion of the park due to us losing track of time admiring the cherry blossoms. We were fortunate enough to visit Japan a couple of days after the cherry blossoms fully bloomed. Enjoy the video.
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden Autumn Leaves
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a short walk a few minutes away from Shinjuku station. No one would imagine that there is such a huge and peaceful garden so close to one of the main and busiest station of the capital.
There is nothing like a stroll in such a peaceful garden. Very soothing :-) And the autumn leaves were beautiful!

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Tokyo, Japan
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Tokyo, Japan
Shinjuku Gyoen was constructed on the site of a private mansion belonging to Lord Naito, a daimyo(feudal lord) of the Edo era. Completed in 1906 as an imperial garden, it was re-designated as a national garden after the Second World War and opened to the public. With 144 acres in size and a circumference of 3.5 km, it blends three distinct styles, French Formal Garden, English Landscape Garden and Japanese Traditional Garden, and is considered to be one of the most important gardens from the Meiji era.
Among about the 10,000 trees which grow in Shinjuku Gyoen, there are the first examples planted in Japan such plants as tulip trees, planes, Himalayan cedars and bald cypresses, whose distinctive crown shapes give the garden a solemn and dignified atmosphere.
From the cherry blossoms in spring to the soft greens of summer, the chrysanthemums and colorful leaves of autumn and the snowscapes of winter, Sinjuku Gyoen is an ideal place to get close to nature and enjoy the changing seasons, the perfect oasis for metropolitan and short-term visitors alike.
History of Shinjuku Gyoen Park
Shinjuku Gyoen originated during the Edo Period (1603-1867) as a feudal lord's Tokyo residence. Later it was converted into a botanical garden before being transferred to the Imperial Family in 1903 who used used it for recreation and the entertainment of guests. The park was almost completely destroyed during World War II, but was eventually rebuilt and reopened in 1949 as a public park.
Shinjuku Gyoen is comprised of three different types of gardens:
The oldest is a traditional Japanese landscape garden featuring large ponds dotted with islands and bridges. Well manicured shrubs and trees surround the water together with several pavilions and the Kyu Goryotei (also called the Taiwan Pavilion) which was built on the occasion of the wedding of the Showa Emperor. A chrysanthemum exhibit is held during the first two weeks of November in the Japanese garden with flower displays and large, temporary pavilions erected around the grounds.
The park's other main gardens include a symmetrically arranged formal French garden, and an English landscape garden featuring wide, open lawns surrounded by flowering cherry trees. The rest of the park consists of forested areas, lawns and several structures including a restaurant, an information center and an art gallery. There is also a beautiful greenhouse with many tropical and subtropical flowers.
Shinjuku Gyoen is home to a large number of cherry trees of more than a dozen different varieties. From late March to early April, more than 400 somei yoshino trees blossom around the English garden turning the lawns into one of Tokyo's most popular and pleasant hanami spots. In addition, the park has numerous early and late blooming cherry trees which provide an extended cherry blossom viewing season (mid March to late April) for those who miss the main season.
Shinjuku Gyoen is also nice to visit during autumn when the leaves change. There are a lot of different types of trees that change colors around the park, however the maple trees are particularly beautiful and can be seen in large numbers around the Japanese garden and Momijiyama (maple mountain) on the park's eastern side. The colors typically appear from mid November to mid December.
