The ULTIMATE Japanese FOOD & DRINK Tour of Shibuya - Izakaya Bar Hopping | Tokyo, Japan
In January of 2019, I had the amazing opportunity to spend twelve days in Japan while working a job for a company there. I had some of the most incredible travel and food experiences of my life during those twelve days, and was lucky enough to immerse myself in traditional Japanese culture and visit some of the country’s most iconic sites. I hope you enjoy watching this Japan series as much as I enjoyed filming it!

On the night of my third day in Tokyo, I set out on an incredible food and drink tour with Magical Trip, a tour service that is available in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima and takes small groups of tourists on a wide variety of food and cultural tours. Best of all, the tours are led by local guides, so participants get the inside scoop on places known only by locals. I couldn’t wait to get started!
My Film Making Kit ►
My last street food tour of Tokyo began on another freezing night at Shibuya Crossing, the busiest intersection in the world! I met up with my tour guide, Remi, and my fellow tour-goers, and we set off on our Izakaya, or a mixture of restaurants and bars, tour of Shibuya!
At our first place, we started with a wet towel to clean our hands (and in my case, my face) before our meal. Then, we ordered some shochu, a Japanese spirit that’s a lot like vodka. It’s about 25% alcohol and reminded me of rakia. It’s pretty strong!
My first dish was tuna sashimi with shoyu (soy sauce) and wasabi. It was so fresh and fatty. One of the best things about dining in Japan is all of the fresh seafood! Next up was the fried oyster, which was crunchy and buttery and fantastic with the mayo it was served with.
On our way to our next place, we passed by lots of restaurants and stores selling things like shoes, clothing and even lingerie! This area is exactly what you expect to see when you think “Tokyo,” bright lights and a dizzying flurry of activity everywhere you look!
Our next stop was an Izakaya building, where we went up to the third floor and had some sake with ice to start, followed by some wagyu beef that was torched right at our table! I had it with some rice and wasabi. It was so buttery and a little crispy on top from the torch. Fantastic!
Then I had some waygu beef with rice and green onions, which was also amazing! I loved it!
After that, we headed to our third Izakaya, a place called Meat Alley, which offered a wide selection of alcoholic drinks and meat dishes. I started with some plum wine, which tasted like grapefruit juice! I couldn’t believe it was wine, but it was delicious!
After our drinks, we moved on to some karaage, or fried chicken. It was so different, but so amazing! It blows KFC out of the water, for sure! Next I tried some asparagus and mushrooms, which were phenomenal. Then, it was time for bacon! It was super thick and fatty and very flavorful.
I followed the bacon with a super dry, cold sake that had a nice, fruity flavor, and we finished off our night with a quiz based on some of the information Remi shared with us on our tour. How do you think I did?
Wow! What a night! That Izakaya tour was so much fun and was a great way to eat some food and have some drinks like a local would. I have to thank Remi and Magical Tours for such an incredible night.

Epic RAMEN and YAKITORI Food Tour - Duck Ramen + Pork Belly Skewers | Tokyo, Japan
In January of 2019, I traveled to the country of Japan and spent twelve amazing days touring its sites and food hotspots, including my first stop, Tokyo! I’ve loved Japanese food, especially sushi, since I was eight years old, so being able to get authentic Japanese cuisine in the culinary capital of the world was an incredible experience I will never forget!

My first full day in Tokyo continued when I linked up with my friend Brian from Tokyo by Food and Ramen Adventures for an outstanding nighttime ramen and yakitori tour that had me in Japanese food bliss! Come with me as I continue exploring the culinary world of Tokyo, Japan!
My Film Making Kit ►
At our first stop, we placed our orders at the ticket machine to start. Brian suggests going with the option in the upper left corner if you don’t read Japanese. I couldn’t wait to have my fourth bowl of ramen of the day!
We ordered a creamy ramen with everything on top: duck breast, pork chashu, chicken chashu, bamboo, an egg, and more. The fantastic duck flavor hit me right away and I loved the creaminess of the broth. The thickness of the noodles was just perfect and the yolk in the egg was amazing! The chickens that produce the eggs are given a certain kind of feed that gives the yolk its incredible look and taste. I love how every ramen I’d had so far was completely different from the others. This one reminded me of a creamy Italian pasta, and you can tell how fresh the ingredients are.
Next, we took a 25-minute Metro ride to a yakitori, or skewered and grilled meat, place in the Hamadayama area, which had a lot of low-rise buildings and retail space. It was almost like a ghost town!
This place sells yakitori as well as a selection of Japanese spirits. They gave us towels to clean our hands. We started with some Japanese sours, which wasn’t strong, but was still very nice. We followed that with some ray jerky, which was like a fish jerky containing mirin and soy sauce. It was delicious, especially with the Japanese mayo it was served with!
Next, we had some shishamo, which is a type of fish from the waters off Hokkaido, which tasted like a nice, freshwater fish. They were full of eggs, which gave them an unbelievable flavor. They were the best salty, dried fish I’ve ever had!
Our next dish was a vegetable that was topped with bonito flakes, wasabi, and soy sauce. It reminded me of a radish, but was actually a type of Japanese yam. The texture reminded me of a carrot!
Then, we moved on to the yakitori! We got six different kinds and started with the most traditional, chicken thigh with green onions. It was tender and fatty and bursting with flavor, and the soy paste that came with it was incredible. After that, we went with a Japanese cheese that’s coated in herbs and wrapped with pork belly. It was sensational!
Next were the bacon-wrapped cherry tomatoes, which exploded in my mouth! Then I went with some of the sweet potato moonshine, followed by the asparagus wrapped with pork belly. The fattiness of the pork belly made it yet another delicious treat.
After that was the bacon-wrapped quail eggs, which exploded in my mouth and, combined with the fatty pork belly and the sauce on it, was out of this world. It was my favorite of the night so far! I followed that with the pork topped with grated daikon and soy sauce, which had a great contrast of flavors.
Everything here was grilled to perfection, and best of all, everything was only about $1 U.S. each, so you can have an extremely filling and delicious meal for just $10!
What an outstanding ramen and yakitori food tour! If you liked this tour of authentic Japanese food, please give this video a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already. I will see you in the next travel food adventure!

Epic RAMEN and YAKITORI Food Tour - Duck Ramen + Pork Belly Skewers | Tokyo, Japan
I had the best day in Japan! Romantic Festival and Veggie Izakaya food
We go to an Izakaya to have some delicious Yakitori and see Japan’s most romantic festival! If you are a vegetarian or vegan coming to Japan and don’t want to miss out on the must eat Izakaya yakitori experience, do not worry! Most Izakayas have a lot of options. Japanese vegetables make the most delicious Yakitori and a lot of places in the most popular areas of Japan come with plenty of choice.
Today we went to Yakitori Centre in Shinjuku. I had so many Yakitori to pick from (you order everything by a tablet)! Other popular spots you can get Yakitori is Omoide Yokocho. This popular area in Shinjuku is always lively and a great place to eat traditional Japanese street food. In most places you can see the menu before committing and I always enjoyed eating there. I highly recommend Negi (Japanese onion), Peppers and Garlic. The best thing about Yakitori Centre is that it is VERY cheap and has many main Yakitori dishes as well as sides.
Some tips for vegans visiting Japan - super famous and popular Torikizoku unfortunately doesn’t have a lot of options. Although I have been there a lot, the only dishes I can order are sides like fries and unlimited cabbage! There is cheese mochi but it is not vegan.
Most Izakayas offer an “all you can drink” and “all you can eat” options. If you are vegan or vegetarian like me, make sure that there are enough variety for you to eat before selecting the “all you can eat option”. But if you eat meat and have a big appetite, then this is truly the most economical way to enjoy Izakaya food!
The festival we went to is called Tanabata! It is a festival celebrating the meeting of two Deities and I personally think it’s one of Japan’s most romantic festivals as well as being the most beautiful festival in Japan! Out of all the festivals I have been to, I think that this is an absolute must see!! You can truly feel a sense of Japan here! This was the best day in Japan!!

Saying goodbye to Japan's most insane arcade
The day after I arrived back in Japan we decided to visit and say goodbye to one of Japan’s most insane Arcades. Kawasaki is only a short train ride away from Tokyo and there you could find an incredible Japanese arcade that has an amazing variety of Japanese retro arcade games as well as claw machine games, rhythm games, fighting games, drum games, dance games, coin pusher games etc. We decided to explore and take a tour of this Japanese arcade. They even had pachinko style games where you can hit the jackpot lottery and win a ton of pachinko coins! In Japan, gambling is illegal so a pachinko is the answer to those wishing to gamble. You play for pachinko coins or medals and exchange them for prizes.
Anata no Warehouse has unfortunately closed down and I can’t think of any other arcade in Japan or elsewhere that has the same cult following. As you enter you are greeted by a reconstruction of Kowloon Walled City. The design is grimy on purpose. The man behind this recreation is Taishiro Hoshino and as well as creating all the arcade decor pieces from scratch, him and his team also imported signs and other details directly from Hong Kong!
Visiting a gaming arcade or game centre in Tokyo is an incredible experience you can have only in Japan. Japanese arcades are on another level and this was definitely one of the best arcades in Japan. Not only can you win a lot of prizes but it is also a great place to meet up with your friends. Arcades in Japan normally also have Purikura (photo machines), ice cream and drink vending machines, and even cosplay outfits that you can borrow while enjoying yourself in the arcade!
If you enjoy visiting game centers then you still have Taito station and club Sega and many others. If you are travelling to Tokyo and missed the opportunity to visit Kawasaki Warehouse then I highly recommend paying a visit to Akihabara or Ikebukuro. Both places have numerous arcades with a great variety of newer and retro Japanese games. Akihabara especially good if you’re into shonen manga, anime figurines, idols (oh and maid cafes… many many maid cafes). Ikebukuro is a paradise of SHOUJO manga, BL manga, hot anime guys and Japanese butler cafes where you can role-play coming home to a masnsion and be served by butlers! Both of those places will fulfil your arcade (as well as Otaku) needs!!
