Shoshone National Forest (/ʃoʊˈʃoʊniː/ shoh-shoh-nee)[4] is the first federally protected National Forest in the United States and covers nearly 2,500,000 acres (1,000,000 ha) in the state of Wyoming.[5] Originally a part of the Yellowstone Timberland Reserve, the forest is managed by the United States Forest Service and was created by an act of Congress and signed into law by U.S. President Benjamin Harrison in 1891. Shoshone National Forest is one of the first nationally protected land areas anywhere. Native Americans have lived in the region for at least 10,000 years, and when the region was first explored by white adventurers, forestlands were occupied by several different tribes. Never heavily settled or exploited, the forest has retained most of its wildness. Shoshone National Forest is a part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, a nearly unbroken expanse of federally protected lands encompassing an estimated 20,000,000 acres (8,100,000 ha).
The South Fork of the Shoshone is a smaller version of the North Fork. It has the distinction of being a very good brown trout fishery. There are also cutts, rainbows and brook trout to keep the fishing interesting. Access to the South Fork is limited due to private property bordering much of its length, from the confluence of Buffalo Bill reservoir upstream 35 miles to the Shoshone National Forest boundary.

Shoshone National Forest Wyoming: Authentic Old West Experience 4K Video
If you're looking for an authentic Old West experience, you can't beat Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming. The forest, about an hours drive to the east of Grand Teton National Park, is in as pristine condition as you'll find in the Rocky Mountains.
With enormous snow-capped mountains and buttes and beautiful lakes rivers and waterfalls, the area around the Brooks Lake area is especially beautiful. The Brooks Lake Lodge even offers guests horseback tours of the forest, which further enhances the Old West, out-of-the-way feel we experienced tent camping nearby.
Whether you're camping, hiking, paddling, fishing or riding horses, you can't beat the Shoshone National Forest for delivering an authentic Old West experience. That said, when you're ready for a delicious meal in an authentic Old West town, head on down to Dubois, Wyoming. The closest town to the forest has many great restaurants and nice people to boot.
One last note: Many of the trees in the western mountain ranges have been killed by bark beetles. In fact, you'll notice most of the forests in this video are gray ghost forests. Scientists say the beetle population explosion plaguing the forests is in part due to the fact that the region isn't as cold in winter as it used to be. Hard freezes for extended periods used to hold the beetle population in check. The ghost forests are firm proof we need to do a better job of protecting the environment for future generations.

A preview of the Shoshone River and Canyon just outside the Cody border. In the distance you can get the place where the daily rodeos take place.
The Shoshone River is a 100-mile (160 km) long river in northern Wyoming in the United States. Its headwaters are in the Absaroka Range in Shoshone National Forest. It ends when it runs into the Big Horn River near Lovell, Wyoming. Cities it runs near or through are Cody, Powell, Byron, and Lovell. Near Cody, it runs through a volcanically active region of fumaroles known as Colter's Hell.[3] This contributed to the river being named on old maps of Wyoming as the Stinking Water River.
The current name was established in 1901 due to popular demand.[2]
Buffalo Bill Dam on the Shoshone River
West of Cody the river is impounded in Shoshone Canyon by the Buffalo Bill Dam, created as part of the Shoshone project; one of the nation's first water conservation projects. A number of hot springs along the Shoshone were drowned by the reservoir.[3] Upstream of Buffalo Bill Reservoir the Shoshone splits into the North Fork, which follows a long canyon down from the Absaroka Mountains to the vicinity of the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park, and the South Fork, which originates at the southern end of the Absarokas.

Buffalo Bill State Park near Cody, WY
Loved this park. Near enough to Cody that we could run in to shop or lunch at Irma's. Peaceful. the weather was great. Unfortunately, far enough fro Yellowstone t be a long drive. Still, I want to go back. It had boat ramps, hiking trails, volunteer hosts. It was pet-friendly.
Lousy TMobile - as usual in the west. Iffy phone service and no voicemail.

Shoshone National Forest ( shoh-SHOH-nee) is the first federally protected National Forest in the United States and covers nearly 2,500,000 acres (1,000,000 ha) in the state of Wyoming. Originally a part of the Yellowstone Timberland Reserve, the forest is managed by the United States Forest Service and was created by an act of Congress and signed into law by U.S. President Benjamin Harrison in 1891. Shoshone National Forest is one of the first nationally protected land areas anywhere. Native Americans have lived in the region for at least 10,000 years, and when the region was first explored by European adventurers, forestlands were occupied by several different tribes.
The Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains are partly in the northern section of the forest. The Wind River Range is in the southern portion and contains Gannett Peak, the tallest mountain in Wyoming. Yellowstone National Park forms part of the boundary to the west; south of Yellowstone, the Continental Divide separates the forest from its neighbor Bridger-Teton National Forest to the west. The eastern boundary includes privately owned property, lands managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Wind River Indian Reservation, which belongs to the Shoshone and Arapahoe Indians. Custer National Forest along the Montana border is on the northern frontier. The Oregon Trail, the 19th century covered wagon route, passes just south of the forest, where broad and gentle South Pass allowed the migrants to bypass the rugged mountains to the north.
Shoshone National Forest has virtually all the original animal and plant species that were there when white explorers such as John Colter and Jim Bridger first visited the region. The forest is home to the Grizzly bear, cougar, moose, tens of thousands of elk as well as the largest herd of bighorn sheep in the U.S. The streams in the forest are considered to have some of the best game species fishing opportunities in the U.S. including Yellowstone cutthroat trout. More than 1,300 miles of hiking trails, 32 campgrounds and adjacent forests and parklands provide numerous recreational opportunities. There are four wilderness areas within the forest, protecting more than half of the managed land area from development. From sagebrush plains through dense spruce and fir forest to craggy mountain peaks, Shoshone National Forest has a rich biodiversity rarely matched in any protected area.
