Leon, Nicaragua: An unvarnished look at downtown - International Living
Get your free report on Nicaragua here:
International Living editor Lee Harrison tours downtown León—Nicaragua's intellectual capital, and also a university town. León, the capital of the country for 200 years before Managua was so designated, once served as the country's political, military, cultural, and religious center.
It is said that the only reason that Managua was made the capital was because of its location: between the very liberal León and the very conservative Granada.
León is still the intellectual capital of the country today, and its Municipal Library has good collections. The Metropolitan Cathedral here is considered the most significant colonial structure in all of Central America; many prominent Nicaraguans, including Ruben Dario, are buried inside its walls.
In this video, you'll see:
--A well maintained city with a recent rise in tourism
--A good example of colonial architecture
--More foreign influence -- like an Italian bakery and a new casino
--A lot of wall art and photos as tributes to Nicaraguan freedom
--Book sales at the side of the street and sidewalk vendors selling food and antiques
--A bustling main square

Hard Labour - Nicaragua
Third world economies struggling to end child labour

Nearly half of Nicaragua's population live below the poverty line. It means that working has become part of everyday life for hundreds of thousands of children, as their families struggle to make ends meet.
A group of children smash stones into small pieces, risking blindness as chips of rock fly into the air. Officially, child labour is illegal in Nicaragua and the cooperative leader in one quarry is quick to deny that any children are working there. It is prohibited for children to work as stone cutters. It's much too risky. Children should go to school, not work. But Anibal, a ten-year-old labourer, tells a different story. He has already spent a year in hospital after he was injured working at the quarry. A pile of dirt fell from up high. It fell on me and injured my leg. Despite the objections of the Sandinista government, being one of the poorest countries in Latin America leaves families with little choice. Diana Espinoza, the local representative from Save the Children admits it is a very difficult situation: there's a whole market with child labour at several levels.

Matagalpa, Nicaragua
Matagalpa is in the mountains of northern Nicaragua. A bustling city nestled in a bowl in the mountains; located at the heart of Nicaragua's coffee region, and filled with warm, friendly Nicaraguans. I visited there the first time in November 2015 for a couple of days and hope to return again.
NICARAGUA: TEENAGE PROSTITUTION EMERGES AS A GROWING PROBLEM
Spanish/Nat
Teenage prostitution is emerging as a major problem in Nicaragua.
More and more underage girls are selling their bodies on the streets of this impoverished Central American nation.
Many of the girls are forced into prostitution to help their parents make ends meet -- others to pay for their own drug habits.
In the second of a three-part series on Nicaragua's sex industry, APTV looks at how school age girls are being forced into a harsh adult world.
A prostitute waits for clients on one of the main thoroughfares of the Nicaraguan capital Managua.
Tough anti-inflationary measures by the government of Violeta Chamorro have produced extreme hardship in an already poor country.
Ever greater numbers of women are being forced to sell their bodies to survive.
The ready availability of drugs like cocaine and marijuana have only aggravated the problem.
Many of the prostitutes are of school age -- like 15-year-old Socorro Gutierrez.
Socorro spoke to APTV on the day she was discharged from hospital where she had undergone three months of treatment to cure her venereal disease.
She invited us back to the rusting Sandinista-era East German-built bus in which she makes her home.
Socorro and her mother come from a growing sub-class in Nicaragua where drugs and prostitution go hand in hand.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
I sniff glue with my friends, we go out stealing, we smoke drugs in the toilets of a bar called La Coca. (close-up) I used to get into cars and do things there. And the men from the cars gave me money. It was meant to be for food but I spent it on marijuana, crack and glue. (super close-up) I caught a disease called... chanclo they call it. (How did you get that?) Through sex. I don't know which man I caught it off because I'd been with so many. I don't remember.
SUPER CAPTION: Socorro Gutierrez, 15-year-old prostitute
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
All this happened when I was living with her father. He gave me a bad life, he didn't work and I had to go out looking for money. And often he spent my money and threw away our food and sometimes he hit me. I didn't know she was on the street. He allowed her to go out on the street to give him money.
SUPER CAPTION: Socorro's mother
Cured of venereal disease, Socorro could try and look for a different kind of life.
But drugs and her impoverished circumstances make it unlikely she will stay off the streets for long.

Drug-Taking Child Prostitutes Work The Streets Of A World Cup City
Children as young as 12 are selling themselves for sex for as little as 80p in one of Brazil's World Cup cities, a Sky News investigation has found.
On the backstreets of Recife, in northeastern Brazil, we met a group of children aged between 12 and 17 who were sniffing glue. Some of the children were involved in prostitution.
Glue bottle in hand, 12-year-old Elaine said she did not always feel safe and bad things sometimes happened on the street.
We were told that for 10 to 20 Reais (£2.55 to £5.10) she would allow men to take her home, to motels, or even to the local swamp for sex.
