Siddara Betta Hike
110 km from Bangalore, a great place for a day hike. Its even kids friendly, as you can see.
Half way through, there is a cave temple (Shiva) and you can expect a lot of devotees hiking till the temple. The actual beauty of hiking starts after temple! You come across a number of caves, huge rocks fallen randomly and the trail goes through these rock pile.
Throughout the summit you will hike on or around rocks. Even the summit is a huge monolithic rock.It is like a table top; flat and wide open and its one giant rock! You will have monkeys accompanying you through the hike. Don't be alarmed, they are harmless but curious. Don't carry loose items or carry bags but carry you stuff in a backpack and they don't bother you.
Bears and Leopards (not kidding) roam around this mountain (terrain) and its advisable to hike in a group. For now (starting Jan 2018) hiking beyond the temple is banned, since these bears and leopards have given birth to cubs and they are very territorial and over protective.
If you wish to hike the summit, do it after a month or 2. Cops will be at the foothill and talk to them about the permission before hiking.
Cave Explorations on Siddhar beta hills (Karnataka)
Ipsita (my daughter) was so curious about the trip that she made us get up at 5 o’clock in the morning. We left home (Bangalore) at 6.30 in the morning and reached Siddhar beta (100 kms) at 11 o’clock having multiple halts on the way. We first saw a medium size temple of lord Siddheshwar swamy at the foot of the hill. From there after 200 meters of distance we found an arch were the trekking began. Climbing up Siddhar beta was not risky but quite tiring as the steps and slopes continue for more than two kilometers. Finally we reached the cave temple on the top, where the priest poured five mugs of cold water on each our heads for 10 rupees. The caves actually extend from there behind that temple upto one kilometer. We hired a guide to explore some caves. The caves were fully dark and required us to literally crawl at many places. The name of the hill is siddhar beta (saints’ hill) because the saints used the caves for meditation in the past. The journey was tiring but quite adventurous and memorable.

MADHUGIRI FORT- A DOCUMENTARY
MADHUGIRI FORT- is 3,930 ft (1,200 m) elevation, Madhugiri is asingle hill. It is the second largest monolith in Asia.[1] Nestled on its steep slopes is a fort. Antaralada Bagilu, Diddibagilu, and MysuruGate are the three gateways of the fort. A series of doorways leads to the hill. The ruined temple of Gopalakrishna is located at the top.
The construction of the original mudfort was undertaken by Raja Hira Gowda in the 17th century around 1670 AD. An interesting incident prompted the Gowda family to considering building a fortress. A stray sheep went missing around the Madhugiri hillock only to return late in the night dripping with water. This was music to the ears since a spring would definitely be welcome sign for rain deficient area. A decision to construct a fortress was arrived and the task was completed. The Gowdas started ruling this region based at Madhugiri Fort.
