Five Kina Bus Crews, PMVs' on the Highways and the PNG Transport Sector
Unless you understand the intricacies of PMV (Public Motor Vehicle) travel, getting on a PMV bus for inter-provincial travel can be quite daunting.
The growth of the transport industry in Papua New Guinea has given rise to a tough market of unregulated informal employment at the PMV stops, along the highways and at towns and cities outside of Port Moresby.
Bethanie Harriman takes a look at the PMV industry.

Safe Cities: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea 2012
Port Moresby is one of five pilot cities -- along with Quito, Kigali, New Delhi and Cairo -- participating in UN Women's Global Programme Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls. Operating successfully since its December 2010 launch, the project, entitled Port Moresby: A Safer City for Women and Girls, aims to develop, test, evaluate and disseminate a model that makes cities safer for women and girls.
Port Moresby -- Papua New Guinea's capital -- is characterized by poor and crowded living conditions, a growing population with high urban migration, increasing cultural diversity and ethnic tensions, and a widening gap between rich and poor. It has been ranked as one of the five least-liveable cities in the world based on scores in five areas: stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Large natural resource extraction projects in mining, petroleum and liquefied natural gas have generated solid increases in GDP over the last decade, but economic growth has not translated into the development of the country or its people.
The city's violent crime threatens the safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and girls, who live in fear of physical and verbal sexual harassment and assault and are too often victims of these and other forms of gender-based violence. The city's marketplaces are among the most unsafe public spaces where gambling, drinking, drug sales and consumption, rape, gang rape, sexual harassment, intimidation and ethnic fights occur on a daily basis. Consequently, the markets provide the key entry point for mobilising residents to make their city safer by deepening the understanding of every citizen's rights and responsibilities and promoting women's leadership and participation in efforts to improve governance in the markets.

Papua New Guinea Travel Goals
We traveled 6,353 miles to Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, and asked local tribespeople one question: If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
This is what they said.

Beautiful Madang, Papua New Guinea
Madang (old German name: Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen) is the capital of Madang Province and is a town with a population of 27,420 (in 2005) on the north coast of Papua New Guinea. It was first settled by the Germans in the 19th century.
Madang is viewed by many in the country as being safer and more pleasant for expatriates than the larger cities of Lae and Port Moresby. Because of this, some NGOs have chosen Madang as the location of their main offices in country.
CUSO (a Canadian NGO) and VSO (a British NGO) both have their headquarters in Madang.
Save the Children, WWF, and World Vision are also present with branch offices in Madang.
As a consequence Madang has a large number of expatriates working and living in the town than its small population would suggest.
Indian Tourists To Get Visa On Arrival In Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea will now allow visa on arrival for tourists from India.
The announcement was made by PNG's Governor General Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio at a dinner he hosted in honor of the visit by India's President at the State Function Room at Parliament House.
The announcement of the visa on arrival is a reciprocal gesture. In 2015, the Government of India opened its doors to facilitate visa on arrival for Pacific Island countries.

Port Moresby - The City Traditional Culture of Papua New Guinea Part IV
Port Moresby - The City Traditional Culture of Papua New Guinea Part IV - Port Moresby (/ˌpɔərt ˈmɔərzbi/; Tok Pisin: Pot Mosbi) is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea (PNG). It is located on the shores of the Gulf of Papua, on the southeastern coast of the Papuan Peninsula of the island of New Guinea, which made it a prime objective for conquest by the Imperial Japanese forces during 1942--43 in World War II, as a staging point and air base to cut off Australia from Southeast Asia and the Americas.
The Motuan people of the area now known as Port Moresby traded their pots for sago, other food and canoe logs, sailing from Hanuabada and other villages built on stilts above the waters of the bay.
During World War II, some Papuan men enlisted in the Papua Infantry Battalion, and others as carriers over trails and rough terrains (porters) as supply support to Allied and Japanese armies during long jungle marches.[8]
In September 1975, Papua New Guinea became an independent country with Port Moresby as its capital city. Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, represented the Queen of Papua New Guinea at the celebrations.[13] New government, intellectual and cultural buildings were constructed in the suburb of Waigani to supplement and replace those of downtown Port Moresby. Visit Rabaul, Papua New Guinea: A Rabaul Highlights Tour
A busy morning in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea with much to see. I had to divide Rabaul into three videos of which this is the first.
Why do the Rabaul people refer to whites as dim-dim? Has to do with the first missionaries - at least this is what I was told. The natives saw whites blowing their nose into a square of tissue and keeping it. What? Keep body fluids? I agree -- dim-dim --

Finally, a chance to talk to the friendly locals. The Rabaul market is a market like any other with a few different fruits, vegetables and items to buy.
Unfortunately, Rabaul is not deemed safe to walk around after dark and our L'Austral cruise ship had established a curfew for passengers and crew. Sigh...
