Silver City Comet at Broken Hill Railway Museum Quick Tour
Silver City Comet Broken Hill Railway Museum Quick Tour. A look into the power car and driving cab and the engine room which has for traction, four GM six cylinder engines arranged horizontally in two banks of two engines each with the engines in each bank arranged back to back in order that the power of each be fed into a common gearbox thus one engine is higher than the other to achieve this. Each bank of two engines then feeds traction power via a gearbox and through a tailshaft to the inner axle. on a bogie.
Each bank of two engines powers the inner axle of a bogie. Also, there are two 4 cylinder GM engines installed arranged cross ways, one at each end of the power car, to provide electricity for the train including the air conditioning.
After looking through the power car, we have a look through the first and second class sections of the train, view the kitchen and eating sections of the dining car, and finish at the end of the train at the van.
Silver City Highway - North of Broken Hill
On this trip I was driving a Hyundai Tucson, which I had purchased the year before. It’s an AWD vehicle with better clearance then the sedans I had always driven in the past. I also hoped that the tracks north of Broken Hill would be a good place to christen the car on outback roads.
The day I planned to hit the dirt tracks I was greeted with pools of water gathering in the motel car park , I knew it would now be impossible to travel the Wilangee Road. Instead I headed to Tibooburra.

SILVER CITY COMET ONCE THE PRIDE OF NEW SOUTH RAILWAYS
Between 1937 and 1989, the Silver City Comet was the pride of the railways and the outback operating between Orange and Broken Hill in New South Wales. Twenty nine years ago I rode the Comet making a story for Seven News of one of its final runs before the train was withdrawn. The Comet is now housed in a rail museum at Broken Hill. This story incorporates a recent visit along with 1989 material generously provided by Seven News.

Broken Hill, Outback NSW, Australia
Broken Hill is a mining town in outback New South Wales, Australia.
The line of load in Broken Hill is the richest deposit of Silver, Lead and Zinc in the world. We saw a beautiful sunrise and a huge Wedge Tail Eagle just sitting on a fence. There were also a lot of Emu's around.
We had a look around the town and saw the fountain at the Twin Lakes. We stopped to have a look at the Court House. It is a very beautiful old building. While we were there I had a close look at a sort of dug out canoe.
Carved from Bloodwood, it represents a contemporary interpretation of aspects from traditional indigenous culture, including images portraying animals from the river. The canoe is made in two pieces, weighs approximately one tonne and contains water to represent a certain irony that it has lost it's function-it cannot float. Water is vital to this region and to the traditional people, the BAAKANTJI, which literally translates as People of the Darling River.
We visited Brown's Shaft at the Junction Mine and then went to see where The Royal Flying Doctor is based.
On top of JP Keenan lookout, you get a good view around Broken Hill.
We went to see the gallery of the famous painter, Pro Hart. There was an amazing painted Rolls Royce car! At the Living Desert, there are Sandstone sculptures and a Flora and Fauna sanctuary.
