Flooded Sinait Church, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, Oct 3-8, 2009
Typhoon Pepeng Hit Northern Luzon, Philipppines, Oct 4-7, 2009
1. The super typhoon Pepeng started to hit provinces of Isabela, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Apayao and Mt Province on October 4 whole night with gusty winds. We started to prepare in the parish of Sinait. Sound system amplifier installed in the sacristy of the Sinait parish were disconnected to avoid damage with the perennial mud flood in the sacristy as experienced in 2007. Two water pump generators were readied for enentual flood in the church. Windows of the Chburch were closed and locked. Electric current was shupt up in the Church building.
2. Heavy rains began its downpour at 6:00AM of Sunday, October 4, 2009. Whole day heavy downpour of rains eventually flooded the Sinait Church. Three areas were inditified as entries of water into the Church. Two towers with open windows, in between tiled floors of the main aisle and northern floor wall line, and sacristy. Volumes of water entered into the Church from sacristy as overflow of the outside water of the easter part of the church compound. the prepared san bags could no longer hold the entry of the water but trapped the mud entering the church.
3. After 8 hours of continuous water flooding the inside church, tiled floor of the main aisle in the middle of the Church broke up but no visible force of water coming out from the breakthrough. Soon the flood transfolrmed the whole church into a swimming pool with the pews underwater. The two water pump generators operated in round the clock from 6AM of Oct 4 to 6AM of Oct 5. By10:00 of October 5, 2009, all the water inside the church were pump out.
4. Heavy rains stoped the whole day of Oct 5, 2009. But rains continued during the night but no oever flow of water from the outside of the Church. IN the morning of Oct 6, Tuesday, the church was flooded again with clear water coming from underneath the filed floord of the church with identified 6 visible water source coming out from in between the tile floors. This time, no excess water coming from outside the church.
6. Six parish staff (Jong, Arjay, Bugoy, Francis, Eduardo and Ricky) with Fr Janong and Fr. Rabe started to dry up and clean the flooded area at 9:00AM until 11:45AM. After lunch break, the identified 6 small water openings sprang again water.
Flooded Sinait Church has been a perrenial problem since years back everytime there is a a heavy downpour of rains and tuphoons. This year, twice the church was flooded in July and in October 2009. Two engineers, including the Municipal Engineer, had comed yesterday, October 5, 2009 to assess the situation of the church.
Continous rains with the return of Typhoon Pepeng in Cagayan ARea towards Ilocos area, is making difficult for all.
SINAIT CHURCH
The church itself is simple with the façade flanked by two square columns. The main attraction of the church is the statue of the crucified Christ. The feast of Santo Cristo Milagroso or Apo Lacay as local folks call Him, stands out among other religious celebrations in Ilocandia. Every year thousands of devotees from within the region and outside flock to the shrine of Apo Lacay in Sinait several days before His feast on the 3rd of May. According to the old tales, boxes containing the images of Apo Lacay and La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc drifted ashore in Logo, a sitio of Dadalaquiten along the boundary of Sinait, Ilocos Sur and Badoc, Ilocos Norte. Although the versions of the origin of the statues vary in some details, they all agree of one thing; Apo Lacay and La Virgen Milagrosa chose where they wanted their images to be. The people of Sinait wanted to bring home La Virgen Milagrosa while Badoc wanted the Crucified Christ. The respective parish priests of Sinait and Badoc ordered men to carry their respective statues home. To their dismay, the statues could not be moved despite the number of men trying to carry them. After failing, the priests tried exchanging the icons instead a lo! The first miracle of the images happened! The images were lifted without difficulty; the Virgin to Badoc, the Crucified Christ to Sinait.
Today the Sto. Cristo Milagroso attracts devotees just like the Black Nazarene of Quiapo ant the faithful pay homage to Apo Lacay inside the Church. These are annual pilgrimages to the shrine and there is an impenetrable crowd in the church on the first Friday of every month.

2-24-19 Singing Lord Have Mercy, Christ Have Mercy. This very special church contains the Black Nazarene (El Santo Cristo Milagroso). Per Wikipedia: “History traces the life-sized statue to Nagasaki, Japan. It was probably sent floating in the sea by missionaries operating in secret in Japan (for fear of persecution during the Tokugawa Regime). The box was found by local fishermen in the shores of Barangay Dadalaquiten Norte, on the boundary between Sinait and nearby Paguetpet (La Virgen Milagrosa), Badoc, in the year 1620, and fishermen from both towns carried it ashore. They found two statues inside the box—a statue of the Black Nazarene, and a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”
