A tender for its design is scheduled to be issued by the end of 2016.
No dates for the completion of works have been announced.
Macau lawmakers are against the new central library’s location and its costs but have no right to oppose the project.

Macau China Senado Square Video of Fountain with People Walking through a Unesco World Heritage Site
Macau China Senado Square Video of Fountain with People walking by. The square is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Macau. Macau 澳門 China 中国 Population - 541,200. Currency - Macanese pataca (MOP). Language - Cantonese and Portuguese. Time Zone -- GMT + 8 hours. Main Airport - Macau International Airport MFM. Best Time to go -- fall season from October to December. Macau is situated 60 kilometres (37 miles) southwest of Hong Kong and 145 kilometres (90 miles) from Guangzhou. It is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China; the other being Hong Kong. Macau consists of 4 regions Macau Peninsula (popular tourist area); Taipa (location of the Airport).; Cotai (strip of reclaimed land); and Coloane (beaches and walking). Macau was a Portuguese colony and Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century. This has created a distinctly European looking old city in the Macau Peninsula region. Many of the older buildings are located within a UNESCO World Heritage site and the include: Moorish Barracks; Mandarin House; Don Pedro V Theatre; Sir Robert Ho Tung Library; Senate Square (Largo do Senado); St. Dominic's Church; and Mount Fortress. Macau is famous as Asia's largest destination for gambling and attracts busloads from mainland China and weekend trippers from Hong Kong. Most of the casinos are located along the waterfront on the southern side of Macau Peninsula. However, this is likely to be surpassed by the Cotai Strip, which is being developed into The Las Vegas Strip of the East.

Macau World Heritage 'Leal Senado' Building 澳門 世界遺產 民政總署大樓
Originally built in 1784, this was Macau's first municipal chamber, a function it maintains to the present. The name Leal Senado (Loyal Senate) derives from the title City of Our Name of God Macau, There is None More Loyal which was bestowed by Portuguese King Dom John IV in 1654. The Leal Senado Building is neo-classical in design and has retained all its original master walls and primary layout, including the courtyard garden in the back. Inside the building on the first floor there is a ceremonial meeting room that opens onto an elaborate carved library styled after the library of Mafra Convent in Portugal, and a small chapel.
