So, I've spent a few days in and around Turku and had a lovely time. But now I want to see the famous finnish archipelago. So I'm gonna go over there and rent a bicycle.

Thus begins the trail to the beautiful and unique Turku archipelago with Alistair Logan. This journey is a one of a kind experience, which will stay with you.

Seili - Leper Colony / Mental Hospital / Research Centre

The Finnish name of Seili is a corruption of its Swedish name, Själö, from the Old Swedish word 'själ', meaning 'seal'.

In 1619 the island became a leper colony, as the old leper hospital of Turku was moved there after a fire.

The lepers were lodged in buildings near to where the church stands today.

The present church was erected in 1733. The lepers and mental patients of the island had a separate entrance to the church as well as an enclosure separating them from the rest of the church goers.

The last leper died in 1785, and the establishment on Seili then became a mental hospital, which functioned there until 1962.

The existant buildings (except for the chapel) date from the 19th and 20th centuries. The new hospital was designed and built in 1800-1803.

Today the island is used as a base for The Archipelago Research Institute of The University of Turku.
