2010 Fox Glacier Air Accident Re-investigation
According to the official finding published by New Zealand’s Transport Accident Investigation Commission, the 2010 Fox Glacier air crash that killed nine people was caused by improper loading of the skydive plane. At least that was the official finding published by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission. But as this story asks, could that be wrong? And why was some of the wreckage buried within days of the disaster? Families demanded a new investigation after 3rd Degree reporter Michael Morrah enlisted the help of top accident investigators Andrew McGregor and Tom McCready to dig up the remains of the aircraft and look for new evidence.

-- About this video --
Today we are doing not only the highest skydive in New Zealand but the highest skydive in the Southern Hemisphere with Skydive Franz Josef. It’s time to skydive at 19,000ft!
We head on over to the Skydive Franz Josef base where we are then transported to the Franz Josef airport. Here, we are briefed and suited up for tandem skydiving in Franz Josef.
The anticipation grows as we board the small aircraft with our tandem masters filming the entire thing for our skydive photo and video package. Then it’s up, up and away to 19,000ft.
On the flight over Franz Josef, we get some of the most incredible views for skydiving in New Zealand. We can see the Southern Alps, the highest peaks in New Zealand, the Franz Josef Glacier, the Fox Glacier and all the way out to the West Coast and the Tasman Sea. It’s one of the most scenic places to skydive in the world.
First to jump is Laura at 15,000ft, then Robin rises higher and higher to 19,000ft having to put on an oxygen mask before the jump.
Skydiving is the most insane feeling in the world and we love every second of this adrenaline-fuelled activity.
So what do you think of a Franz Josef skydive? Is this an activity you would add to your New Zealand must-do list?

Bucket list checked! Sky Diving at Fox Glacier, New Zealand
This is another big challenge I have completed in New Zealand. I always wanted to do sky diving before we going to New Zealand. Although I have the determination to do it at Fox Glacier, I did not make any booking prior to the trip.
Unfortunately, just a couple of weeks before my trip, the West coast of South New Zealand was hit by a serious storm and damaged a bridge nearby Fox Glacier, and caused the road to from Fox Glacier to Wanaka closed for repair. The reopening date of the road is unknown until we have arrived at Christchurch, we forced to change our itinerary, this is the flexible of traveling with a campervan and staying at the campsites.
Since the road to Fox Glacier is closed, we initially planned we will do the skydive at Queenstown. But while we are touring the beautiful South Island, we received the news that the road to Fox Glacier is now opened. So I decided we will do it at Fox Glacier. The reasons I so insist on doing it at Fox Glacier are: 1) the view will be stunning, free-falling from 13000 feet, I will able to see the Franz Joseph Glacier and Fox Glacier and the infamous Mount Cook. 2) The price is reasonable.
When we have arrived at Fox Glacier, I immediately go to the sky diving operator's office to make the booking, but unfortunately, they are closed.
I was so disappointed and worried I will not able to do the skydive here. At night I decided to try my luck by calling the operator manager, and he told me that there are 2 slots available for the tomorrow afternoon session. But I wanted a morning session because I will need to drive my way back to Christchurch after the jump. After a short discussion with my wife, we decided to change our itinerary again to do the jump.
Finally, the day has come. We check-in ourselves at the operator office, we were told by the staff that, due to a lot of clouds, our jump might be canceled. We were so upset. We wait at the office and after 30 minutes, the staff delivers good news to us, we are permitted to go ahead. Immediately we suit ourselves up and the jump instructors provide some jumping guidelines and technique to us.
We wait for the first batch to do the jump, I was so nervous yet excited. Finally, the plane has returned to the base, and it is our time to board the plane. In the plane, the jump instructor trying to talk a lot with to distract me from being nervous, but honestly I'm not that nervous. I just can't wait to jump out of the plane.
When we have reached 13000 feet, my jump instructor and I move towards the door, my feet and butt were hanging outside the plane, the feeling is unbelievable. When he is ready, he just pushes ourselves out of the plane.
Free-falling, it is exciting but not scary. Why? Maybe I was attached to my jump instructor. I just felt the pressure on my chest and face. The free-falling took about one minute, The fall was so quick I can't recall anything I saw before the parachute opened. Once the parachute has opened the fall was slow down. The view from above is definitely worth the price.
Before touch down to the ground, my instructor let me control the parachute. It was fun like I'm flying in the sky.
This a very fun experience. I'm not sure I will do it the second time or not. After all, it is a very risky and expensive activity. But I will definitely regret if I'm not doing it.
Compare skydiving to Bungy jump, Bungy jump is way scarier. This is because, during skydiving, you are not the one who makes the jump, it is the instructor who pushes you out of the plane. Whereas for a Bungy jump, you have to make the jump by yourself, no one is pushing you out of the platform. So you will need a lot of courage to do it.
Fox Glacier, New Zealand - 29 January 2019
The trip heads to Fox Glacier, situated in the heart of the Southern Lakes. Fox Glacier, along with it's near neighbour, Franz Josef Glacier, tumbles down from the high peaks practically to the tropical forest.
