Ljubljana Travel Guide - Slovenian Memorable Moments
Ljubljana Travel Guide - Slovenian Memorable Moments
Ljubljana has no world-famous attractions, which is just great: there's no need to hop from one place to another, taking photos and crossing the items on your checklist. You have all the time to stroll around and enjoy the city itself. In the summer, its center hosts a number of city sponsored events, from children workshops and public playgrounds on the streets that get closed for traffic for the occasion, to Trnfest's off-beat street performances and musical events of all genres. In autumn it shows its academic face as it fills again by students of the state's largest university to whom the city owes much of its youthful character. Cold December days are warmed by thousand of lights, the new year's decoration conceived by local artists, and by food and drinks sold from street stands on the banks of Ljubljanica river. After surviving the boring gray remaining of winter, the city erupts again with spring flowers planted on its streets and crossroads.
Ljubljana (lyoob-lyAH-nah) is a charming city full of artists, museums, and galleries. With a population of 300,000, it is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe. The Ljubljanica river flows through the center of town, past Baroque buildings and under the ramparts of the ancient castle on the hill. The new city and modern-day commercial core lies to the west of the river, while the old city and the castle are located on the east side of the river. Many bridges cross the river, the most famous of which is Tromostovje (Triple Bridge), designed by architect Jože Plečnik.
The center of Ljubljana is small enough to cover on foot. You can pick up a free city map at a tourist information center or in the train station. Navigating or finding a street is easy as streets are clearly marked. Bikes are available for rent at the Slovenian Tourist Information Center (beside the Central Market) as well as some of the hotels in the area (€1 for 2 hours, €5 for the whole day ending 7~9pm depending on season). The city's transportation authority LPP operates 26 bus lines, which are clean and run frequently (every 5-10 minutes, 15-30 minutes during the weekend and summer). Most bus routes operate 5am - 10.30pm (Sundays from 6am).
Downtown Ljubljana is full of trendy cafes (outdoor seating in the summer!) and high-quality restaurants. You can find local Slovenian food, and restaurants with ethnic food from many places around the world. Pizza in Ljubljana is of very good quality. Try a burger Slovene style with a horse burger at the Hot Horse! Cheap and good for returning from a night out.
Ljubljana has several good nightclubs (discotheques). The clubs hold special events, they will play a certain syle of music on certain nights, etc. Some will also impose a strict dress code and age limits. Ljubljana offers several hostels and student homes that function as hostels in the summer.
A lot to see in Ljubljana such as :

The river transport on the Ljubljanica and the Sava was the main means of cargo transport to and from the city until the mid-19th century, when railroads were built. Today, the Ljubljanica is used by a number of tourist ships, with wharves under the Butchers' Bridge, at Fish Square, at Court Square, at Breg, at the Poljane Embankment, and elsewhere.

Is Lake Bled in Slovenia A Tourist Trap?
Lake Bled is probably the most famous lake in Slovenia, but is it the best? It's certainly a beautiful part of the world, so we headed over to see what it was like.
As with most touristy places, a lot of them tend to be tourist traps, hiking their prices up to phenomenal amounts just because tourists are there, whether it's worth that much or not.
We visited Lake Bled in December and it was cold, but with the blue skies, the place still looked unreal - what a place. Actually, the whole country was amazing, it completely shocked us and is now up there as one of my favourite countries so far.
In summer, I can imagine Lake Bled being rammed with tourists, potentially making it unbearable, but as we were there out of season, it was really nice. As Goldie said in the video, Slovenia was the right amount of busy, not too many people and not completely dead.
Slovenia is a really nice country and somewhere I'd definitely recommend visiting, and I'll certainly be back to see more of the country.
In the middle of Lake Bled is an island, called Bled Island, which apparently was created by fairies. Goldie tells that fairytale in the video once we get to the island. To get to Bled Island, you need to get on a boat, and after walking past the boats, we walked back and ended up on the boat to the island. It's €15 for a return trip to Bled Island on the paddleboat. It's a bit of a rip off, but there's no other way of getting there out of season as you can't rent a boat with the rental shops being closed.
In the background of Lake Bled, you can see the Slovenian mountains which make for an amazing photo opportunity. On the side of the lake was a Christmas market, but in summer I can imagine all sorts of things going on here.
There's also a castle at the side of the lake that we never made it to.
so is Lake Bled a tourist trap? Kind of, but not overly. The boat ride is an absolute rip off, but the cafe on the Island was pretty cheap. Paying to get into a church is also something that I didn't fancy doing.

We explored an abandoned Slovenian Village
When we decided to visit Slovenia, we were looking for things to do. Seeing as we landed in Venice and rented a car, we thought we'd look along the route to see what western Slovenia had to offer. Slovenia is pretty unknown it seems, kind of forgotten about apart from Lake Bled and potentially the capital city, Ljubljana. So as we were searching on the map, Goldie found this village called Slapnik, which had been abandoned since around 1991 when Slovenia broke away from Yugoslavia.
Slapnik is a small isolated settlement in the Municipality of Brda in the Littoral region of Slovenia. It has no permanent residents. According to Wikipedia. When we arrived, it was clear that at least one of the buildings was at least owned by somebody, whether it was lived in was a different story. Slapnik is so far away from any shops or civilisation that it would definitely be hard to live there.
We wandered around Slapnik, the abandoned Slovenian village to see what was left, what sort of state this abandoned village was in, and to show you guys who might want to know what an abandoned Slovenian village looks like in 2019.
Apparently the BBC were going to make a gameshow where contestants helped to rebuild Slapnik, but I don't think that is going to happen as it was supposed to be in 2019, and we visited in December 2019 and nothing had been done yet.
Remember: When you visit somewhere abandoned like this Slovenian village, or an abandoned building or abandoned theme park, don't take anything, don't break anything, don't cause any damage - simply, don't be an idiot. Be respectful wherever you are.
Whilst wandering around Slapnik, we went into abandoned houses, abandoned sheds and even an abandoned water tank that looked like a church from far away.
The views from these abandoned houses were amazing. Imagine waking up every morning to that view, to just pack up and leave? I wonder what actually happened to make people abandon this Slovenian village.
Have you ever been to an abandoned village? Tweet me and let me know where you visited. Or even better, have you visited this abandoned Slovenian village like we did?

Story of the Horny Poet - Preseren Square, Ljubljana Slovenia
By this point we have already met the 'Gentleman' in Meta and now we are in Preseren Square in the centre of Ljubljana. Spela has been very kind in enthusiastically trying to show me around before she leaves for a class - Ana remains grumpy ( sorry Ana ).
Both, Ana and Spela are explaining the story of Preseren , I presume. So the poet falls in love with this rather young girl even though he his married and Ana thinks he is a paedophile.
The conversation was fun and helped in remembering the history of the poet as well as maintaining a vivid memory of a beautiful day in Slovenia.
In the next video I meet the enlightened new age artist.
