Ljubljana Food Tour with Slovenia Guides - Ljubljana, Slovenia
I was lucky enough to be invited on the Ljubljana Food Tour with Slovenia Guides. We started off with a tour of the Old Town, the fish market, the veggie market, meat market, then got to sample some delicious cheese, homemade bread, and beef tongue. Then we moved on to an old restaurant and had a big plate of meat, sausage, sour cabbage and sour turnip. Next we had some spicy goulash which was excellent, then some pasta. We visited a chocolate shop and sampled some amazing chocolates, and finished off with a traditional dessert.
Everything was so good, one of my favorite food tours of my trip! My guide told me about the restaurant in the castle, Chef Ana Roš was voted the best female chef in the world so I had to try it. That was one great day of eating for me from morning until evening. Thanks again Slovenia Guides!

My 30 Day Eurail Pass - Ljubljana, Slovenia
What a surprise it was to visit Ljubljana, I had no idea what to expect, but I loved the city. With the river and bridges, architecture, all the outdoor seating at the cafes and restaurants, it almost seemed like I was in Paris or Amsterdam, but smaller and more quaint.
My first night I stayed at the Hotel Park Ljubljana, it's a nice hotel just a short walk from the Old Town area. The room was very comfortable, and the view was the best part. I was lucky enough to arrive just as the sun was setting over the city and the castle. What a great view. They also have a very nice breakfast, lots of variety and excellent service. Thanks again for the great stay!
Since Ljubljana is a relatively small city, I used my first full day to take a bus ride to Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. It was a pretty easy ride and Lake Bled is a must if you're visiting Ljubljana. I hiked up to the castle which had a great view of the lake and the little island with the little building. I didn't take the boat ride to the island, but instead took the bus to Lake Bohinj. There's not much to do there, but the hiking is good I heard, and there's a waterfall. There was still snow on the ground and it was cold, so I just flew the drone a little and enjoyed the views around the lake. Then it was time to take the bus back to Ljubljana.
I checked into the Hostel Tresor which is located right in the middle of town, such a perfect location. I had a private room with a shared bathroom, the room was very large and comfortable. The hostel has plenty of common areas, places to eat, a bar and cafe, storage, pretty much everything you need. Plus it's so close to so many restaurants, I didn't even eat there, I just took a short walk and enjoyed dining outside when the weather was warm.
I met up with a local travel Instagram girl (where.is.eli), we had coffee in the main square area, it was very nice to meet a local and talk about travel and her hometown. Next I had a food tour with Slovenia Guides. This was a fantastic tour, we walked all over the city, ate so much good food, it was all just so good. The goulash was probably my favorite, a little spicy. Thanks again Slovenia Guides for the great food tour, it was delicious and educational!
For my last dinner I decided to hike up to the castle and try Strelec. I heard one of the owners was voted the #1 female chef in the world, so I had to give it a try. It was my most expensive meal of the trip, but a similar dining experience in the US would have been 3 times as much I'm sure. They just kept bringing out dishes, I wasn't sure if they always do that, or they figured I was a food blogger since I was taking photos and videos of everything. But it was a very good meal, I highly recommend dining here when you visit Ljubljana.
That was my time in Ljubljana, too short, but it was time to move on to Zagreb, Croatia. Thanks to my Eurail pass, I just jumped on the train and headed to Croatia.

Ljubljana, Slovenia Icy Gelati Curls
On my 43 day (8 countries!) skip through the Balkans, Ljubljana (the capital of Slovenia) turned out to be among my favorite cities on the Planet. The historic center with its Triple Bridge and riverside cafes simply couldn't BE any more charming!
And the Slovenian eats - oh my! The dumplings, the gnocchi, the sausages, the wines! And this - this a tiny stand along the river that makes on-the-spot icy curls of fruit gelati - among my most favorite treats in all my travels!

Three of Ljubljana's top chefs will be preparing typical Ljubljana dishes, which will then be available for tasting at market stalls set up in the historical city centre.
Get to know the flavours of Ljubljana. Taste the Ljubljana cottage cheese pancakes with tarragon and many other traditional Ljubljana dishes prepared by Andrej Kuhar (chef at Maxim), Janez Bratovž (chef at Restavracija JB), and Igor Jagodic (chef at Restavracija Strelec). Children will be able to join creative cooking workshops. Musical entertainment will be provided by the band Dixie šok.
The range of dishes prepared in Ljubljana has always been wide and varied. Slovenia and Ljubljana lie at the crossroads of different culinary cultures, which is the reason why Slovenian cuisine reflects influences from Mediterranean, Alpine, and Pannonian cuisines as well as those from the culinary art of the Balkans and several other parts of the world, which are of a more recent date.
A typical feature of culinary art in Ljubljana has historically been the diversity of ingredients, some of the most notable being vegetables grown in the city's suburban gardens. The areas of Krakovo and Trnovo, located less than a half hour's walk from the heart of Ljubljana, are still the source of the vegetables sold from some of the stalls at the Ljubljana Central Market. Another indispensable ingredient has, of course, traditionally been meat, particularly beef and poultry produced by farms in Central Slovenia. A lot of different birds living in the wild were also widely consumed in the past.
In rural areas, excellent home-made bread baked in wood-fired ovens used to be prepared in the past and the city's modern-day bakeries continue and develop this tradition. The rich biodiversity of Slovenian fresh waters and the Adriatic Sea was reflected in a large consumption of freshwater and sea fish, crayfish, molluscs, and frogs, the latter a speciality of Ljubljana. The city's residents were able to choose from a wide range of fruits, both those grown in orchards in Ljubljana's surrounding areas and those that require warmer climates and were grown in the Slovenian coastal region of Primorska.

Ljubljana Open Market
Recorded on August 31, 2009 using a Flip Video camcorder.
Ljubljana Central Market
Apart from fruits, vegetables, and spices and herbs, Ljubljana's picturesque main open-air market, designed by architect Jože Plečnik, offers almost all kinds of food, including a variety of Slovenian delicacies, such as the Karst prosciutto and the potica cake. Ljubljana's Central Market is more than just a place to shop. Traditionally, it has also been a place for the locals to meet and enjoy themselves together.

Traditional market Ljubljana - SLOVENIA
Slovenia's capital and largest city also happens to be one of Europe's greenest and most liveable capitals. Indeed, the European Commission awarded Ljubljana with the coveted Green Capital of Europe title for 2016. Car traffic is restricted in the centre, leaving the leafy banks of the emerald-green BledRiver, which flows through the city's heart, free for pedestrians and cyclists.
