Smoky Mountains White Water Rafting! | Smoky Mountain Outdoors
Whitewater Rafting on the Pigeon River in the Great Smoky Mountains!
Located near Gatlinburg, TN, the Pigeon River is the 3rd most popular whitewater rafting destination in the United States!
We booked our adventure with Smoky Mountain Outdoors and had an awesome experience! Our guide was experienced and the rapids were tough, but not too difficult that a 1st timer (like ourselves) can't conquer.
This video shows the Upper (or the Big) Pigeon River, which offered an exciting 6.5 mile raft trip down class 3 and 4 rapids through the heart of the Smoky Mountains.

2016 Summer Vacation- Smoky mountains
Our 2016 summer vacation to Tennessee. We visited Smoky Mountain national park and stayed in a cabin on top of the mountains. The view was beautiful from every perspective, but it's important to me to reflect back on our vacation afterwards and to keep these memories close. We explored many parts of Tennessee including Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Townsend, Wears Valley, Hartford, and Sevierville. Lots of good memories and a great vacation!

Upper Section Whitewater Adventure
Trips on this section launch at the TN/NC state line, surrounded by views of the mountains as well as the hydroelectric powerhouse feeding water into the river. And it doesn't take long to get into the whitewater. Within minutes of the put-in, guests find themselves paddling into their first Class III rapid of the day; the aptly named Powerhouse. With the help of an experienced guide, your group will continue through a total of 10 Class III rapids and 3 Class IV rapids, before finishing the trip back at our outpost. With rapid names like Lost Guide, Double-Reactionary, and Snapdragon, guests can expect plenty of excitement on this trip. But don't worry, there will still be time between the rapids to take in the views, soak up some sun and have a swim. This is the ideal trip for those wanting to enhance the beauty of the Smokies with the thrill of whitewater rafting.
Abrams Creek (TN)
**Wood in Abrams Falls. Will go into more detail below**
My 100th river! Abrams Creek near Cade's Cove in the western Smokies. One of the more remote and serene runs in the park; 10 miles of kayaking with sparse trail service. Solid medium flow after well over 2 inches of rain in 18hrs.
Barring Jack's Creek, this is one of the longest shuttles in the Southeast at 1hr 20min without tourist traffic. Most of the run is moving flatwater up through Class 2/3, but there are some surprisingly fun rapids in there especially at this flow, especially Sidewinder.
The bad news...wood in the falls. Large log cutting across from river right, blocking the last large eddy above and sticking left across the lip, with another log blocking the left entrance. This flow creates a stoutass, possibly terminal hole as is, and the wood only exacerbates that. We walked, but the falls was 90% of our reason for going, so the decision wasn't taken lightly.
As far as flow, there was solid, moving flow at the take-out ( Was absolutely awesome for everything except the falls. I imagine a good flow for the falls results in a less exciting paddle out. Pick your poison.

West Prong Little Pigeon, May of 2017
A run of West Prong of the Little Pigeon from the Chimney picnic grounds to top of Room with a View. The video is mostly of the in between rapids as the bigger ones (Boof/Cave, Skywalker) had wood in them. The level was 1.6 at the bridge.
Wild SideTV-Grassy Cove
One of the largest sinkholes you'll find anywhere sits high atop the Cumberland Plateau. Covering about five square miles, Grassy Cove is a beautiful valley ringed by mountains like Brady, Black and Bear Den. Known for it's karst topography, created when water dissolves rocks like limestone, the area is filled with caves and underground streams, fragile ecosystems vulnerable to pollution. It is a place of picturesque natural beauty, seemingly untouched by the hand of progress...a bit of a hidden world in our own backyard. But many fear the mountain fortress surrounding this special place can no longer defend it from development. That's why folks with the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation are spearheading an effort to protect this area from timber cutting and subdivisions...answering a call to conservation first voiced by farmers, who want their kids, grandkids and great grandkids to be able to know and love the same valley they grew up in. GDY's Posse Little River , Tennessee, USA Video by dale briggs footage
The hike to the putin is 3 miles, but is as easy as hiking with a boat ever gets. A shorter hike can be done 2.3 miles to Huskey Gap Branch Falls, a little feeder coming into the river from river left under a little wooden bridge.
After puting in there are a handfull of quality boulder rapids down to the short put in at Huskey Gap Branch Falls. If you are putting in here, you can slide in under the bridge and run the last 15 feet of the feeder falls. Its more fun than it looks. After this beautiful and clear pool, the river does several bends away from the trail. During the first bend, most rapids are class 3, but after a junky ledge next to a trailside bench, the second bend prooves more suprising. A bounty of great class 3-4 rapids appear in ever increasing succession, untill after several juicy sets, the big one appears
