Snorkeling Silfra Between Tectonic Plates // Iceland

If your in Iceland visit this guides for dive and snorkel tours;
Snorkeling in the Magical Silfra Fissure | Thingvellir, Iceland.
Taking a snorkeling tour in the glacial waters Iceland may sound like the idea of a mad person...but with the right equipment, you can take a look into the amazing crystal clear underwater world of the tectonic rift valley in Þingvellir National Park. Our snorkeling tours are operated in the world famous Silfra, a narrow canyon in the lava field located between the continents of America and Europe. So snorkeling in the Silfra actually includes a swim between the continents, not something you do every day!
Also, you wear a dry suit so don't worry about the cold ;)

An unbelievable experience taking an Iceland road trip so we could swim in Silfra Iceland which is basically swimming between tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park. Later in the video we go and explore more of Thingvellir National Park - also known as þingvellir. By the way, we have a dry suit on to keep us a bit warmer :)

ICELAND VLOG # 6 | Snorkeling the Silfra Fissure & Exploring Thingvellir National Park!
Our LAST FULL DAY but probably the BEST day in Iceland (I realize I say this about every single day, but IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER!) We snorkeled the Silfra Fissure that separates the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates--woah! Talk about a wild experience. This glacial water is super cold, so we had to wear dry suits. It was SO beautiful and SO fun! After a little break we headed back into Thingvellir National Park, where Silfra is located, to explore! It's a beautiful area to hike and has a lot of rich viking history!
Most importantly, we got to buy some Kinder Eggs from Bonus, the Icelandic grocery store! They're banned in the US so I was SUPER EXCITED as I dropped chocolate all over myself and struggled to set up the child's toy found inside lolllllllllllllll

Snorkeling Silfra in the WINTER! | Thingvellir National Park, Iceland
I got a chance to snorkel at Thingvellir National Park between two techtonic plates. The techtonic plates were, North America and Eurasia. The water temperature was very cold, however our booking agency laced us in the warmest paraphernalia. It was a life changing experience I encourage everyone to try this tour when they visit Iceland. Who else can say that they went snorkeling in the winter time between two techtonic plates?

In Iceland, the North American and Eurasian continental plates are separating at a rate of about 2 cm per year. You can snorkel or scuba dive in the Silfra rift between the two continental plates in Thingvellir National Park. The extremely clear glacial water is cold at just 35 degrees Fahrenheit but it's an experience you will not soon forget! Filmed using a GoPro camera.

Thank you Nordic Holidays! Book your Silfra trip here!
We drove to Thingvellir National Park to a rift called Silfra which is a fissure between the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates. The water is nearly freezing, but we swam in it for an hour! Wearing drysuits for the first time was a fun experience and made the snorkel trip so much better. The water was unbelievably clear. This was definitely one of the best adventures we took in Iceland!!!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started traveling full-time January 10, 2016. While daily vlogging was not the original plan, we were having way too many cool experiences not to share every single day! Now travel vlogging is our full-time gig and we feel like we have the greatest job in the world! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
We’ve pulled inspiration from several of our favorite travel vloggers on YouTube, such as: +CaseyNeistat +FunForLouis +Jon Olsson +Mr Ben Brown, and any other talented travel vloggers that YouTube’s algorithm will hopefully connect us with ;)

ICELAND DAY 3 - Snorkeling the Silfra - Þingvellir National Park
Absolutely THE BEST experience of our trip! I can't stop smiling while watching the footage from this day!
The Silfra fissure is 'the crack' between the continent of North America and Eurasia. We snorkeled right between the continental plates!
Some facts:
-the plates will drift apart up to 2cm each year
-known as the clearest water on Earth, the underwater visibility is over 100m
-the water is glacier fed at 2°C (we wore dry suits)
-only algae lives in the water
If you ever go to Iceland, this experience is a must!!
