Bald Eagle Ketchikan Alaska
Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour™ Watch it in HD!
Even if you aren't a Deadliest Catch fan, this is an awesome day out on the water.
July 19th, 2013
The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus; hali = salt, aeetus = eagle, leuco = white, cephalis = head) is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it has two known sub-species and forms a species pair with the White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.
The Bald Eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 4 meters (13 ft) deep, 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) wide, and one metric ton (1.1 tons) in weight. Sexual maturity is attained at the age of four to five years.
Bald Eagles are not actually bald; the name derives from an older meaning of white headed. The adult is mainly brown with a white head and tail. The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are larger than males. The beak is large and hooked. The plumage of the immature is brown.
The Bald Eagle is both the national bird and national animal of the United States of America. The Bald Eagle appears on its Seal. In the late 20th century it was on the brink of extirpation in the continental United States. Populations recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. federal government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995 and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States on June 28, 2007.

Ketchikan Alaska
Ketchikan serves as Alaska's southern most port of call for the majority of Inside Passage cruises. Visitors can tour the Tongass Historical Museum, which offers exhibits of traditional native culture, a history of the fishing industry and an example of a timber camp bunkhouse. A major center for sport fishing, opportunities abound for fishing from shore or aboard one of many charter boats. Visit the world's largest collection of totem poles in Saxman and Totem Bight State Park, just outside of town. Or glimpse Ketchikan's frontier days at Dolly's House, a former brothel located downtown.
Shaped by the staggering force of massive glaciers millions of years ago, Alaska's Inside Passage boasts wildlife-filled fjords and lush island scenery — habitat for bald eagles, sea lions, porpoises and whales. Its mountains are carpeted with majestic forests. Inside Passage Alaska is home to Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian Indians whose history is reflected in towering totem poles. Russian settlers left a legacy of onion-domed churches gleaming with icons.

Eagles and Salmon, Mikfik Creek, McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, Alaska - June 2018
I have to feel some sympathy for salmon. Here, in Mikfik Creek, after spending a few years at sea and then fighting their way back to their natal stream, they have to run a gauntlet of predators and other physical obstacles only, at best, to spawn and die. I know it is all part of the necessary natural cycle and so many other species depend on their sacrifice, intended or otherwise. And, more often than not, I end up cheering for the bears. Here, several Bald Eagles take advantage of the riffles in Mikfik Creek to pick off some red salmon and/or scavenge the remains of others mortally wounded by brown bears. That’s just the way it has to be…
