Those interviewed include: Paul Ruesch, fisheries biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game; Bob Penny, chairman of the Kenai River Sportfishing Association; Bix Bonney, member of the Kenai River Sportfishing Association; Jim Evenson, commercial fisherman; Melvin Johnson, commercial fisherman; Stan Thompson, Kenai Peninsula Borough mayor; Harry Gaines, fishing guide; Christopher Estes of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game; Bill Long, hydrologist with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources; Neil Johannsen, director of Parks for the Alaska Department of Natural Resources; Jeff Jefferson, president of the Kenai River Advisory Board; Sharon Jean (?) of the Kenai River Advisory Board; and Alaska Governor Bill Sheffield. Program includes views of fishermen in small boats and standing on the banks of the Kenai River, people posing with salmon, recreational vehicles along river, combat fishing, fish traps in use during Alaska's territorial days, fish netting, annual meeting of the Board of Fisheries, sonar fish counter, biologists tagging salmon, fish processing facilities, protestors, Cook Inlet, and cabins along the river. This segment is very similar, but not identical to, the Alaska Review 56 segment titled When Kenai Kings Run. (Sound/Color/1-inch videotape).
Airing from 1976 to 1987, Alaska Review was the first statewide public affairs television program in Alaska. The show was designed to explore public policy issues confronting Alaska, and to assist citizens in making decisions about the future of their land. Produced by Independent Public Television, Inc., (IPTV), the series eventually consisted of 16 one-hour shows, 46 half-hour shows, and one three-hour special broadcast. Funded through the Alaska Humanities Forum and State of Alaska, the series won multiple awards for public service and educational programming. IPTV dissolved in 1988. Videotapes for all finished productions and raw footage were later moved to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), where they became housed with the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives department in the Rasmuson Library at UAF, shortly after the unit was founded in 1993. The Alaska Film Archives is currently seeking funding to preserve and digitize all of the original full interviews gathered in the making of the Alaska Review series. Copies of finished productions are also held by Alaska State Library Historical Collections in Juneau. For more information, please contact the Alaska Film Archives at University of Alaska Fairbanks.
This sequence contains excerpts from AAF-5006 from the Alaska Review collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska Film Archives is supported by the Rasmuson Rare Books Endowment. For more information please contact the Alaska Film Archives.

Alaska 2015: Historic Heritage House B&B in Fairbanks
Great value. Clean, cozy, comfortable -- The Alaska Heritage House Bed and Breakfast is a charming place to stay and within walking distance to many interesting places in downtown Fairbanks. Van, Bill and their cute lil' doggy, Mable, make guests feel welcome and happy.
After a delicious breakfast in a family-style setting, complete with china on doilies and a house full of period piece antiques from the early 1900's, take a tour through the multi-level home, appreciate the ambiance, art, and decor; sit by the fireplace or one of the many windows and enjoy reading a garden book or Alaskan novel.
Take a five-minute walk and check out the Jade Boutique for vintage treasures, or a delicious lunch/dinner at Big Daddy's BBQ restaurant or the yummy Thai Noodle restaurant. Bobby's Downtown is an impressive Greek restaurant and bar. There are several karaoke bars.
It's a nice walk to the visitor center along the Chena River near the Marriott Hotel, and the new Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center near the Marriott.
There are plenty of antique and gift shops, a Co-op Plaza with lots of nice stores including the Two Street Gallery and a full menu Crepery. The Ice Museum is closed until May, and the Art House Gallery on Cushman & 10th near the bus station is well worth a visit.
And in the opposite direction down Cowles from the Heritage House is the 9th Ave. Hostel where the northern lights can sometimes be seen, a central bus station for trips to the Santa Claus House, North Pole, University of Alaska Museum of the North, etc. About a 15-minute walk further down Cowles is a full service camera store in the strip mall by the gym.
If you opt for a rental car in winter, try to book a vehicle with snow tires.
Enjoy! There's much to see and do :)

Building the Alaska Highway (Rediscovering America w/David Hartman) Part 3 of 6
Could Japan invade the United States? During World War II it was a very good possibility. The United States decided to build a highway between the lower 48 States and the (then) territory of Alaska. It was a very tough undertaking, but the biggest enemies to overcome were the vast untamed wilderness, wicked weather, mud, permafrost, animals and even racism. Here is how the highway was constructed. Hosted by David Hartman.

Approximately ninety percent of the area is wilderness, so it is full of breathtaking scenery, superb fishing and abundant wildlife of all that the North has to offer; truly an ideal location for outdoor types and nature-lovers.
Kenai has a rather prolific history and booming real estate market, as it is known worldwide for its oil, natural gas, ever-growing tourism and flourishing fishing industry, both commercial and private. The Borough has forty-four schools, all of which distinguish themselves with high standards and national ratings, with an impressive teacher/student ratio. The University of Alaska also manages the Kenai Peninsula Community College. Fishing and tourism services, as well as civil service, schools and various other city office positions make up the major employment opportunities in the community.
Soldotna real estate is located in the Kenai Peninsula, and is a bit rural, with the Kenai River as its natural emblem that flows right through the center of town, which makes it another must fishing spot for those hoping to snag a record breaking prize. Aside from excellent fishing, there are a slew of other outdoor activity to take part in, such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, rafting and skiing. There is also a town golf course, a children's park, swimming pools and movie theaters.
Located right on the banks of the river, the Soldotna Visitors Center is an excellent facility to gather information about local attractions and events and things to do in the area, such as the Soldotna Sports Center, where various sporting events take place, the Soldotna Historical Museum and the Centennial Park, where campsites are located, as well as nearby rodeos, baseball and softball events, hokey, ice skating and an assortment of other events and activities.

About Home Insulation
Insulation is a fantastic way to significantly reduce the amount of energy you need to heat or cool your home. Insulation keeps your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, because insulation resists the flow of heat. And, by reducing the heat flow, a properly insulated home uses less energy for heating and cooling and thereby, helps on saving money on your energy bills.
In addition to being an energy saver, insulation also acts as a sound absorber. When installed in walls and ceilings, it can reduce the transmission of sound from one room to another or from the outside.
There are a variety of insulations to choose from including Fiber Glass Insulation, Cellulose Insulation, Foam Insulation and even Cotton Insulation. We offer other items to reduce your heating and cooling costs: Radiant Barriers, and More.
