The Lohan School of Shaolin specializes in the traditional and spiritual forms of Northern Shaolin, Tai Chi Praying Mantis, Seven Star Praying Mantis, Eighteen Classical Weapons, Traditional Lion Dancing, Five Animals / Five Family forms of Southern Fist, Internal Chi Gung and Tai Chi Ch'uan of the Yang and Chen families.
Lohan School of Shaolin History
From it's humble beginnings in 1994, with just a handful of students practicing on the street fronting Sifu Steve's home, to various halls in churches and dance studios, to China town Plaza and finally to it's current site in China Town, it can be said that the Lohan School has come a long way.
Today, there is a respectable number of students, both at the school and in their community outreach programs. The students perform at many community events, casinos and convention functions, and private parties not only to promote the Chinese culture, but also to fund raise for the school which are incentives for them. From one Chinese lion, they can now perform with as many as 7 lions, a 63′ dragon, several drums, and an array of flags, banners and weapons. The school has also developed several senior instructors who teach not only at the school, but also in the various athletic, recreation and community centers.
Besides the regular classes, the school has held several workshops and seminars with visiting Buddhist Priests, Tao Masters, Martial Arts Masters and Spiritual healers. They've also participated in martial events, not only in Las Vegas, but also in Mexico and California. The recently held a Tai Chi retreat in Maui, Hawaii, and plan to do many more in the future.
The school also offers special classes in spiritual and herbal healing, and combines different cultural teachings through music and dance classes.
Northern Shaolin History
The History of Northern Shaolin Kung Fu dates back to the year 495 A.D., when the Shaolin Buddhist Monastery was built in Honan province in Northern China honoring the buddhist monk who brought Buddhism to China. The Monk's name was Badra. In order to defend the temple from attack, the monks developed a martial art system known as Ch'uan (Fist Method). Ch'uan Fa combined Buddhist meditative practices with self defense techniques.
Northern Shaolin Kung Fu emphasizes extension in striking, with deep stances and dynamic kicking methods. The northern styles develop flexibility, strength, coordination, balance, and agility. The Theory of Northern Shaolin is that power is developed through the rigorous training of extended postures, which could be condensed into shorter strikes when used in fighting. Northern training also instills a great amount of versatility in movement and technique.
At the Lohan School we teach the traditional Northern style of Shaolin. This is the largest of the northern lineages taught today, and is taught in a systematic fashion.
Our Goals
1.To be concerned with the revival of the original concepts of Shaolin Kung Fu and Tai Chi Ch'uan.
2.To demonstrate that these concepts are applicable in the modern world.
3.To ensure Tai Chi Ch'uan and Shaolin Kung Fu have been a place in history and in modern society.
4. To maintain the spirit of rediscovery and reawakening of ideas, ideals, and natural principals.
5. To offer an alternative way of life, without drugs, medications, or artificial stimulations.
4. To educate others to be healthy and fit, and to be in touch with themselves, others, and the environment.
5. The state of the art should be maintained, developed, perpetuated and shared with those who seek health and fitness naturally and hollistically.
ALL ARE WELCOME!
Shaolin Wu Gulun Gongfu with Grandmaster Shi De Jian of Shaolin Chan Wu Yi Monastery
Chan cultivates the mind.
Wu strengthens the body.
Yi helps the world.
These 3 Treasures cannot be separated.
If I realize the theory of Chan,
then I can make progress in my meditation and reach the summit.
If I can make these two coordinated, my congfu will increase.
At Shaolin, we say
San Bao Hui Yi
meaning 3 Treasures are 1!
According to the rules of Shaolin,
all three aspects must increase simultaneously.
Grandmaster Shi Dejian was born to a poor family of farmers in China's northernmost province, Heilongjiang.
Heilongjian borders Mongolia and the former Soviet Union.
At age fourteen, Master Shi Dejian started training in gongfu from two local masters, just to stay fit.
Recognizing his potential, one of his masters took him aside and said,
If you want to be a good master, you must go to Shaolin to make progress.
In 1982, a 19-year-old Dejian arrived at the Shaolin Temple.
A star pupil, he was adopted by three prominent teachers, each a Shaolin disciple and a leading folk grandmaster of his generation.
He studied under Grandmaster Yang Guiwu and Grandmaster Chou Huibao, but the bulk of his Shaolin fundamentals were learned from Grandmaster Zhang Qinghe.
In 1990, he became a disciple of Venerable Shaolin Monk Shi Suxi. Master Shi Dejian took his vows as a full-fledged Buddhist monk of the Shaolin Temple in 1992.
Grandmaster Wu was talented at both acupuncture and qigong.
He transmitted the traditional Shaolin art of Xinyiba to me.
Xinyiba has been popularized by Shi Degen, another disciple of Grandmaster Wu Shanlin.
But we keep the true teaching secret.
We keep it mysterious.
We do not demonstrate it out of respect for our master. Grandmaster Zhang never showed it to the public.
Xinyiba cannot be described in words.
It is the supreme cream of Shaolin.
Physician heal thyself
Shaolin self-healing is fostered by quieting your mind, adjusting your body and controlling your diet.
His prescription begins with Shaolin qigong,
specifically the two methods attributed to Bodhidharma,
the Muscle-Tendon Change Classic or Yijinjing and the Marrow-Washing Classic or Xisuijing .
Yijinjing changes the meridians of your body.
Xisuijing improves your circulation, fosters qi, makes you strong and adjusts your body physically and psychologically.
Without the centuries of practice and wisdom of these teachings you cannot reach the spirit of this.
It is useless to learn it and then practice for only a few months. Everyone can practice it. Everyone can feel it. Everybody has the merit of Buddha. If enlightened, you become the Buddha. If not enlightened, you're an ordinary person. You can use qi to heal your body and the body of others. Controlling your diet is an important element of healthy living. Buddhism stressed vegetarianism. Vegetarianism improves your health. The Shaolin vegetarian diet includes grains and vegetables without spices. We eat fruits but nothing too spicy. No ginger or garlic. Monks do not eat anything from animals, garlic, ginger, or onions - nothing spicy or odiferous. We don't eat eggs but can use milk. As a monk of Shaolin, I have no family responsibility. My only responsibility is to research and inherit the Shaolin arts. I put all my effort into this. In my whole life, I know I can only get a little. Shaolin is a land of trial. The adventure of life is to master Shaolin gongfu. Shaolin's medicinal history and methods do not contradict Traditional Chinese Medicine, but we have many special methodologies for treatment. It's the cream of medicine. Shaolin medicine is Buddha's medicine. It must be brought out so everyone can know it and understand it. Some cancer patients who gave up on clinical treatments have come to Shaolin; most have recovered. Grandmaster Zhang propounded a very special treatment - the qiao (gates treatment. There are seven qiao, the eyes, ears and so on. We use specially-formulated powders, pills and plasters to cure illnesses. These external treatments help to adjust the internal flow of the body. Grandmaster Zhang wished that Shaolin medicine would be popularized to benefit all the people of the world. Due to recent events, Shaolin medicine is encountering a big crisis. It has not been publicized. Anyone interested in promoting Shaolin medicine should pursue it here. This medicine does not belong to Shaolin or TCM. It belongs to the world. SUMMARY
=======
Astronomy in China has a long history, beginning from the Shang Dynasty (Chinese Bronze Age). Star names later categorized in the twenty-eight mansions have been found on oracle bones unearthed at Anyang, dating back to the middle Shang Dynasty, and the mansion (xiù:宿) system's nucleus seems to have taken shape by the time of the ruler Wu Ding (1339-1281 BCE).Detailed records of astronomical observations began during the Warring States period (fourth century BCE) and flourished from the Han period onward. Chinese astronomy was equatorial, centered as it was on close observation of circumpolar stars, and was based on different principles from those prevailing in traditional Western astronomy, where heliacal risings and settings of zodiac constellations formed the basic ecliptic framework. Needham has described the ancient Chinese as the most persistent and accurate observers of celestial phenomena anywhere in the world before the Islamic astronomers. Some elements of Indian astronomy reached China with the expansion of Buddhism after the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 CE), but the most detailed incorporation of Indian astronomical thought occurred during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), when numerous Indian astronomers took up residence in the Chinese capital, and Chinese scholars, such as the Tantric Buddhist monk and mathematician Yi Xing, mastered its system. Islamic astronomers collaborated closely with their Chinese colleagues during the Yuan Dynasty, and, after a period of relative decline during the Ming Dynasty, astronomy was revitalized under the stimulus of Western cosmology and technology after the Jesuits established their missions. The telescope was introduced in the seventeenth century. In 1669, the Peking observatory was completely redesigned and refitted under the direction of Ferdinand Verbiest. Today, China continues to be active in astronomy, with many observatories and its own space program.

Shaolin Kung Fu: small Luohan 18 Hands, fighting techniques (read description)
Buddha's 18 hands (罗汉十八手: luohan shiba shou),
instructor: monk Deyang, from Shaolin temple
__________________
- combat strategy:
Chinese kung fu has 36 famous tactics of fighting and self-defense.
Buddha's 18 hands style teaches the 1st tactic, prowess:
tactic 1 - no-fort tactic (空城计): don't take cover behind your fear and weaknesses. keep calm, with no sign of fear or weakness and no pretense of offense or defense. it deters opponents.
this involves calmness and intense prowess in moves.
__________________
- history:
this is the oldest style of Shaolin kung fu.
Liang dynasty (502-557):
Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, entered Shaolin temple in 527 AD. he made meditation part of Shaolin monks' daily routine. monks had simple exercises to recover after meditation and cultivate their body as well. they combined martial art and Zen to form the union of body and mind.
Sui dynasty (581-618):
according to the historical records of Shaolin temple, monks of Shaolin temple had a select set of simple moves based on expressions of daily activities and Buddhism. they later combined these moves into a combat form which was later called 'luohan 18 hands'.
Tang dynasty (618-907):
until the Tang dynasty, the 18 moves were increased into 36 moves.
Jin and Yuan dynasties (1115-1368):
monk Jueyuan, with the help of folk masters Li Sou and Bai Yugeng, developed the 36 moves into about 72. Bai Yugfeng, after becoming a monk with the Buddhist name Qiuyue, became the librarian of Shaolin temple and later increased these into 173 moves.
Ming dynasty (1368-1644):
in Chinese Buddhism, the luohans, those who reach the enlightenment of Buddhahood, were originally only 4, and their number was increased to 16 over time, and in the Ming dynasty it was increased to 18. a group of monks increased the number of the luohan hands into 18 forms, each form with 18 postures with the beginning and ending salutes. out of these, only 2 forms were preserved by Shaolin temple and most of the the others were lost to history. (8 forms of luohan 18 hands are recorded in the Encyclopedia of Shaolin martial arts: scribd.com/collections/4133108). the 1st and the 8th form, which is actually a bigger frame of the 1st form. these are the small and the big luohan 18 hands of Shaolin.
__________________
- note: there are various other forms and styles named 'luohan shiba shou' in Chinese kung fu, and they are historically and technically different from Shaolin luohan shiba shou. these are just different styles with similar names.
