Harriman Fjord paddle - Prince William Sound Alaska
Harriman Fjord in Alaska's Prince William Sound much surely be one of the best kayaking destinations in the world. It is sheltered and stunningly beautiful, with many calving glaciers and abundant wildlife. This 4 day trip in late May 2017 started off in Whittier, a strange town born out of second world war secrecy. From here a private charter took us 35 miles in to Harriman. We use local outfitters Alaska Sea Kayakers owned by the very helpful Pete Denmark. Our guide for the trip was Victor Shen and he was both a fantastic companion and very knowledgeable guide. If you love kayaking add this paddle to your list. We recommend

Kayaking to the Portage Glacier, Alaska
A kayak trip down spectacular Portage Lake to the Portage Glacier, Alaska. The lake is surrounded by high mountains with waterfalls dropping off the cliffs into the water. Portage Glacier is the crown jewel in a mountainous valley capped with alpine glaciers. Portage Lake is only about an hours drive from Anchorage and about 6 km from Whittier, AK.
Kayaking Alaska - Prince William Sound [FULL HD]
After a few years of thinking I would never see my original Alaska video in HD, I was happily surprised to find that I have the originals files that can now be viewed in full HD. :)
From the original upload:
A compilation of 6 days 6 nights camping and kayaking in Prince William Sound, Alaska. August 2012 left from Whittier to Blackstone Bay and Surprise Cove. All footage was shot using a GoPro Hero 2. There was a certain rhythm to this unique experience that I attempted to capture with the footage and editing.

Where in the heck is Girdwood? And why would we go there?
We left Homer, heading north, unsure of our destination. We knew we were going to stop in Girdwood for a hike and Anchorage for groceries. We still hadn't decided if we were going to head back south toward Valdez first or just start our descent back down out of Alaska.
Our first stop was Girdwood. We had heard about an easy hike that had a hand tram over a river. This sounded cool, so we headed that way. Doug and Emmett stayed behind in the RV, which was a good choice because it was a muddy, slippery trail. It was raining and we got wet. As we approached the hand tram there were a bunch of people with lots of camera equipment. We asked the first what they were doing and she said, making a film. I guess we had already figured that one out. The second person we asked a more direct question, What is your film about? He thought he had a pretty good sense of humor and said Mayonnaise. We finally asked a third and he said it was a UCLA college thesis project. Anyway, there were a bunch of people and they pulled us across the hand tram, which was nice because it was a long way and it's heavy to pull. It was awesome, well worth the hike in the rain.
We were still debating on whether or not to go the extra 120 miles to check out Valdez. We took a vote and it was 50/50. The weather wasn't looking good, cold and rainy. We searched on the internet to see what we'd be missing. Besides checking out a new place and the beach the thing the kids would like the most would be the fish hatchery. The salmon are spawning and heading upstream back to the hatchery to lay their eggs. And since there are so many salmon there are also seals looking for a meal. This would be cool to see but with the not so great gas mileage we get in the RV, it would cost us about an extra $150 in gas, plus 2 days of driving. We've seen a lot of seals and salmon and hatcheries, so we decided a better option would be to spend a couple days in the Largest National Park.
So we headed to Anchorage on our way to Wrangell St. Elias. In the travel magazines the kids saw an Ulu factory tour. It was more of a gift shop, but they did get to see how the Ulu knives are made. We also took a trolley to the federal building where they were able to get a couple more Jr. Ranger badges and do a scavenger hunt. Then we headed to Costco and filled the fridge and cupboards and had some pizza for lunch. And drove some more before ending our day with a delicious salmon dinner in the Winnebago in the parking lot of Wasilla Walmart.
Next stop, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Portage Glacier Alaska

Warning - There is a lot of wind noise.
Portage Glacier is a glacier on the Kenai Peninsula of the U.S. state of Alaska[1] and is included within the Chugach National Forest. It is located south of Portage Lake and 6 km (4 mi) west of Whittier.
Portage Glacier was a local name first recorded in 1898 by Thomas Corwin Mendenhall of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, so called because it is on a portage route between Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm. Hundreds of years ago the glacier filled the entire Portage Valley, a distance of 14 miles (23 km), and was connected to what are now five separate glaciers.

We took a day trip with our friends @LessJunkMoreJourney over to Whittier. Its a small ocean town, that you go through the longest highway tunnel in north america. It was pretty neat, and beautiful views everywhere...

RVing to Alaska | Hanging out, fishing, and exploring the woods
Hanging out in the woods in Alaska, fishing, and exploring..
We got to Faribanks, almost too fast! We had an event toward the end of June we had reservations for, and wanted to attend, but moved too quickly! So we had time to kill. We didn't want to venture too far, and have to back track a lot, so we found some remote places close to town, and explored what we could.
