A field trip my advanced studio class went on, it was quite the trip and worth the time. I decided to document the trip and create a memory out of it, after all its the last field I'll take at the University of Lethbridge. This was also shot with the 'Canon Rebel T1i' (18-135mm lens).

SAAG | Local Students: Art's Alive and Well in the Schools and Aa'sitapiwa & Then and Now
Art's Alive and Well in the Schools
The Southern Alberta Art Gallery is committed to fostering the creative development of artists at every stage in their career. With our annual Art’s Alive and Well in the Schools exhibition, we’re able to provide formative experiences for Lethbridge students from Kindergarten to grade 12 by exhibiting their work in a leading Canadian contemporary art gallery. As one of SAAG’s longest running programs, we estimate Art’s Alive has exhibited over 15,000 works of student art in its 39-year history. Each year this exhibition reminds us art is a fundamental aspect of learning and development, and an important endeavor in cultivating a community for our young artistic, cultural, and innovative leaders of tomorrow.
Aa'sitapiwa: All the Young People
Earlier this year a group of students from Sir John Franklin School in Calgary and Tatsikiisaapo’p Middle School from Kainai began collaborating on art projects that address various cultural issues, perspectives, and understandings regarding truth and reconciliation. Centering on themes of trust, exchange, and dialogue, artists and teachers developed a methodology reflecting these ideas: one student would begin a work of art and send it to the other school to be completed by another student. Through this project artists performed important steps in the process of reconciliation by building trust and lasting relationships. With these concepts in mind, the title Aa’sitapiwa (pronounced ah – si –dah –BEE), meaning All the Young People, was born.

Then and Now: the Buchanan Collection seen through Emerging Artists
William Austin, Amy Dalton, Dylan Dobbie, Vanessa Eagle Bear, Shona Fitz-Gerald Laing, Alison Grigg, Megan Morman, Arhea Robinson, Sheila Shaw, Kelsey Tuck, Martina Visser, and Grace Wirzba.
This exhibition brings emerging contemporary artists into dialogue with the historic collections of Donald W. Buchanan. Students from the BFA and MFA Art program at the University of Lethbridge selected an item from this collection that engages with their practices and interests, developing a conversation with Buchanan’s eclectic collections of art and artifacts. Their responses typically took one of two approaches: an engagement with the aesthetic qualities of the artwork or artifact; or an investigation of the historic context to critically analyse contemporary society. The artists in this exhibition are influenced by dramatic shifts in society and art. From the development of abstract imagery, to globalization, to the exploration of gender and identity issues, the juxtapositions in Then and Now highlight both change and continuity. In the production of thoughtful contemporary art, the students have initiated a conversation about the wider art practices and history represented within the Buchanan Collection. Through their practice these historical works are brought into the present, reintroducing us to diverse Canadian and international art and artifacts and addressing the importance of the individual collection as a legacy in our community.

Temptation Lethbridge
Created specifically for a local film festival in Lethbridge, Alberta. The Southern Alberta Art Gallery hosted the festival where the theme this year was reality television.
Beamish and Brent brainstormed the basic idea surrounding the project, and then set to film the whole thing. The plan entailed creating three reality television spoofs that were set in the exotic local of Lethbridge, Alberta.
This particular episode is, of course, Temptation Lethbridge (spoofing Temptation Island) I thought the idea was especially funny because there are few places less sexy then Lethbridge, Alberta. Virtually nothing is scripted. All dialouge is courtesy of the fantastic improvisation of the actors.
It was a gong show working around the scheduals of so many busy actor/students, but it was worth it. The video was accepted and shown publicly at the festival March 24, 2006.
Cast/Crew:
Filmerographer: Brent Felzien
Producer / Pirate: Micheal Beamish

Lethbridge Public Art Tour - Part 1
See more content like this on
Lethbridge is home to a diverse and growing collection of public art, most of which is accessible by foot, either in the Downtown core or as you explore throughout the city.
Here’s Part 1 of our feature on Lethbridge Public Art, a collection of installations that you might encounter on your next visit to Lethbridge.
Aeolian Aviary (EEE OH LEE EN, AY VEE AREE) - Catherine Ross and Denton Frederickson
Located on the east side of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG), this work combines the acoustic resonance of 16 wind and light-sensitive string instruments with the dynamic emergence of 67 bronze birds.
A Departure - IIan Sandler
Installed in October 2009 just a few steps from the Galt Museum, this installation is based on three types of driver train wheels that have crossed the Alberta CPR High Level Bridge over the past hundred years. When facing the bridge, you can peer through the spokes of the large wheel to see its older counterpart, as if looking back in time.
Offrande migratoire / Migratory Gift is the creation of Québec based artist Marc Dulude, brought to Lethbridge as part of a public art exchange between Lethbridge and twin city, Saint-Laurent, Québec. The work is comprised of four bronze flying geese tethered to a large sandstone rock which they are dragging across the grass. The line drawn in the earth marks the trail of the stone and references the strength of the friendship that allows the two twin cities to surpass barriers as they continue to honor their 50-year twinning.
Signal - Douglas Senft
Installed in 2012 at the site of the new City of Lethbridge Fire Hall and Emergency Headquarters this installation evokes the image of smoke or flames rising from the ground.
Three Kings - Jason Trotter
Adapted from archival portraiture photographs of Chief Red Crow (Kainai), Chief Sitting Behind An Eagle Tail Feather (Pikuni) and Chief Crowfoot (Siksika), this mural represents the tribes of the Blackfoot Confederacy and pays homage to these great native leaders and the aboriginal population of southern Alberta.
Sphere of Social Consensus and Influence - Carl Granzow
The object, a 65 steel sphere, is banded by plates of stainless steel which are engraved with the names of the original 16 member organizations of the Allied Arts Council. Over time and with ongoing exposure to the elements, the sculpture has darkened in color from its original state.
How Can I Miss You If You Never Go Away - Andy Davies
Installed at the southeast corner of Galt Gardens Park in September, 2007, this installation is made up of four independent poles, each with a special shape and meaning. This colorful, kinetic sculpture interacts with both wind and sun — bringing life to the area in the form of dynamic shadows on the surface of the street, sidewalk, and park.
One and One - John McEwen
Renders a series of images by pioneer photographer Eadweard Muybridge as sculptural objects. Based on a story about a man who moved into his barn each winter to sleep between his work horses, the work consists of sixteen small flame-cut steel horses and twin barn structures.
