New Zealand Campervan Holiday 2008: Invercargill, Southland Museum and Queen's Park
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE!
We have always enjoyed visiting Invercargill, in Southland at the bottom of New Zealand's South Island. Queen's Park occupies a large area near the city centre. Parking our campervan there, it was an easy walk into the main part of town.
The Southland Museum and Art Gallery is in Queen's Park and has some fantastic exhibits, some of which appear in the video. The coffee shop isn't bad either!
If you enjoy gardens, aviaries, children's playgrounds and such like then you'll love Queen's Park.

Southland museum closure may have been hasty
The decision to close the Southland Museum and Art Gallery may have been hasty according to an Invercargill city councillor.
Following information provided to council at a meeting on Tuesday, Councillor Lindsay Abbot said he’s not scared to say he may have been mistaken about the decision to close.
Tuatara at the Southland Museum
Invercargill's iconic Tuataras on display in the distinctive pyramid shaped Southland Museum and Art Gallery tuatarium situated in Queens Park central Invercargill New Zealand.
Tuatara are endangered reptiles endemic to New Zealand and which, although resembling most lizards, are part of a distinct lineage, the order Rhynchocephalia.
They are living fossils and are the only surviving members of their order, which flourished around 200 million years ago.
The Southland Museum and Art Gallery is the world’s leading captive centre for Tuatara starting with its first breeding success in 1984.
Bring on the Museum redevelopment Councillors so the thousands of visitors can continue to enjoy these unique animals with an even better experience.

Today we are doing one of the free things to do in Invercargill, go to the Southland Museum! After trying a breakfast of Southland Cheese Rolls, we head to the museum. Not only is it full of exhibitions, it’s also home to a tuatarium where you can see a three-eyed lizard, the tuatara!
The Southland Museum or “Invercargill Museum”, is among gardens in the city centre of Invercargill. When we arrive we waste no time in visiting the tuatarium which is home to tuatara, a native reptile of New Zealand. It’s known as the living dinosaur and has many fascinating facts about it. We see the oldest tuatara, Henry, who is over 110 years old!
We spend a lot of time learning about the tuatara at the Southland Museum, but the museum in Invercargill is full of exhibitions relating to the Southland New Zealand region. Our favourite, is the Roaring 40s about the voyages from Southland to the subantarctic islands. There are loads of interactive displays, which are really impressive considering it’s a free museum.
So what do you think of the Southland Museum? Would you visit the Southland Museum in Invercargill? LUK in the comments!
