Volcanic Sand Bath Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
VOLCANIC SAND BATH? YES!! Welcome to Ibusuki, Kagoshima!
In this episode, John travels to Kagoshima prefecture on the bottom of Kyushu to visit this unique style of onsen. It's call “suna mushi onsen” (砂むし温泉) in Japan. This style of Volcanic Sand Bath is only in Ibusuki, Kagoshima.
There are several health benefits associated to suna mushi onsen.
★ Good for the skin
★ Improves blood circulation
★ Increases your metabolism
★ Relaxation
The sand is on average 50 to 55 degrees Celsius (~122 F) and that heat can be adjusted for children (cooler) -- or hotter for those who can take the heat.
The recommended time limit in the sand bath is 10 minutes although I like to stay under for 15 minutes. You can stay as long as you like but to be honest, you can't stay over 15-20 minutes because your skin and body just can't manage it.
After the sand bath, you rinse off, return to blue yukata robe and soak in an onsen if you like.
The whole experience is only 1080 yen.
A small towel is 120 yen. Lockers and a yukata are included.
Getting to Kagoshima:
Flight: I flew SKYMARK airlines for 9,800 yen but ANA and JAL also fly to Kagoshima from Tokyo as well as Osaka / Kansai.
Train:
Kagoshima is now linked by the Shinkansen like from Tokyo but it takes about 7-8 hours with a change of trains in either Hakata (Fukuoka).
Bus: There are night buses from Osaka, Fukuoka and Tokyo.
I recommend flying though.

A new way of spa : Sand bathing
Japan has come up with a very unique and interesting way of making sure that people relax. A new kind of spa treatment has been launched, called 'sand bathing'. People are covered neck deep, in warm sand, where they stay until the sand gets cold.

People are buried in sand dunes as alternative therapy
(14 Oct 2016) LEAD IN:
The dunes of Merzouga are providing an unusual therapy treatment.
Locals and tourists travel to the site in south eastern Morocco to be buried in the hot sands.
STORY-LINE:
Up to their necks in it.
Men are buried in the hot grains of the Merzouga sand dunes.
This is an ancient Berber treatment that is still practised today.
Workers dig rows of holes, ready to welcome fans of the therapy.
Abderrahim Benyahya has been running a sand bath tent for ten years.
His working day starts early in the morning.
We dig holes in the sand at around 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. (local time), when it's not too hot, he says.
We choose a good location next to the tent where the sand is clean, then we let the sand holes heat up.
And the holes get as hot as 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit).
Customers are covered in sand and a covering is placed over their heads to prevent heat stroke.
Today, Mustafa Abu Khar is sampling the treatment.
He's travelled hundreds of kilometres from Sale, near Rabat, to experience a sand bath.
Abu Khar's father uses them as an alternative therapy for knee pains - and suggested his son give it a try too.
Like all sand bath customers, Abu Khar is buried for no more than five to 15 minutes, before workers help him out of his hole, wrap him in blanket and bring him inside the tent.
A few sips of warm tea or water is all that is allowed during the session - cold liquids are not consumed.
And after 30 minutes resting in the tent, Abu Khar heads outside to be rubbed down with a bit more sand.
I feel very good. I feel psychological comfort and my nerves are relaxed, everything is good, he says.
A treatment course takes between one and three days, with up to three sessions per day.
Each session costs between 20 Moroccan Dirham (2 US dollars) and 50 Moroccan Dirham (5 US dollars).
There is no medical evidence that the sand baths provide any health benefits.
And Ouafae Chegdali, a doctor, advises people with any pre-existing medical problems to get professional advice before trying the therapy.
Patients with heart, hypertension or diabetes disorders should consult a doctor before having this treatment, she says.
The peak season for sand baths is the height of summer - from July to September - when the dunes are at their hottest.
