Spirit Lake Trail (Skidegate) Haida Gwaii British Columbia
What the world needs is hope and healing one step at a time.
My last hike in Haida Gwaii. Bittersweet. Beautiful day hiking with friends. The Haida people have 2 clans, you are either a child of a raven or an eagle. Kind of a cool history, however my prayer is that they consider themselves ultimately a child of the Creator God. Filmed in 4K.

Rainforest Hiking on the Anvil Trail Along the Tlell River in Haida Gwaii British Columbia
What the world needs is hope and healing one step at a time.
This is Day 1 of our 7 day vacation on Haida Gwaii doing a hike that took us 5 hours, but we enjoyed ourselves immensely and took it slow. Because of a recent rain it was slick in some spots, but my friend said I could include the clip in which she fell! We were thankful for ropes on the steep sections. Highly recommend this hike. I tell a little bit about how this place was formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands and now it's called Haida Gwaii. Very interesting story! The native people are very gracious. This was filmed in 4K.

Sunset on the Sleeping Beauty Trail. Haida Gwaii, British Columbia
I decided, after work, I was going to hike the Sleeping Beauty trail, on the beautiful island of Haida Gwaii, to catch the sunset. It did not disappoint.

We are on a week long vacation to the Haida Gwaii and so far this is my favourite hike! So lush and unique with the Hans River close by. We had an eagle entertain us for a while, and big slugs slithered on by. Incessant bird sounds were music to the ears! And NO rain!! This was filmed in 4K.

Gwaii Haanas Treasures - Haida Heritage Centre, Skidegate
From the top of their pole, Haida Watchmen who might have been on the lookout for invaders from foreign lands centuries ago are now welcoming visitors to Skidegate. Master harvesters, carvers and navigators, the Haida were true masters of the sea.
A visit at the Haida Heritage Centre in Skidegate is the best way to start seeing the world through the eyes of a very successful nation with great knowledge, elaborate trade networks, rich material culture and a wealth of traditions.
There are as many histories of Canada as there are are First Nations. If anything, the Haida have reclaimed their history in an inspiring way -- one where they are again taking control of their destiny, their resources.
They are developing a tourism industry that is based on sound stewardhip practices.
And quite frankly, the Haida are showing the world a part of Canada that most Canadians know very little about and that most will likely never see. Because, to come here and to experience Haida Gwaii the way it should be experienced requires from visitors that they be prepared to be exposed to a world that has very little to do with what most of us were led to believe Canada was like when we went to school.
My first impression of Haida Gwaii was that of a land inhabited by a people who draw their identity from the place they inhabit with great wisdom.
It seems one of the lessons I learned is that material wealth can play a positive role in how a people grounds itself in the environment which nutured it.
My visit to the Haida Heritage Centre certainly opened my eyes. I'm OK with that. I am just along for the journey... just as long as I learn a little bit more every day from those I share my journey with.

Traditional Haida Feast in Skidegate British Columbia
Before boarding our sailing vessel we are hosted by Roberta Olson, a Haida Matriarch, in her house in Skidegate not far from the Haida Heritage Centre.
Roberta is helped on the occasion of our visit by two young Haida who welcome us into her home with a song. The food is amazing: herring roe on seaweed, different kinds of salmon prepared in traditional fashion, halibut, salads, edible flowers, chowder and lovely tomatoes. The experience is very rich.
Like other First Nations elsewhere in Canada, Haida society is matrilineal. This means that the house, property and many other cultural elements are passed on to the next generation through women.

Great Bear: Interviews with Coastal First Nations and Nanwakolas Council Society
In our second video installment about the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project, we interview members of Coastal First Nations and Nanwakolas Nation as they share why this monumental project is so important.
Only one place on Earth is home to ancient cedars, towering spruce, cougars, wolves, grizzlies, salmon, and the iconic Kermode, or White Spirit Bear, which gives its name to the region. At 6.4 million hectares, the Great Bear Rainforest is the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the world. For thousands of years First Nations on Canada's west coast have sourced life, culture and heritage from this environment. Today, the Great Bear Rainforest is such a global rarity that it has inspired unconventional partnerships, visionary leadership, and a radical change in the way we manage our resources.
Skidegate Community Mapping Project
For one of my classes in Haida Gwaii I explored Skidegate with Octavia and Rebecca. We looked at the arts and culture, industries, governance, local experts, natural spaces, food related sources, community events and organizations. Here's a little video documenting our time.
Haawa to all of the people we spoke with and who shared their knowledge and experiences with us. We felt very privileged to be welcomed into this amazing place.

Totem Poles @ Lime Hollow Center for Environment and Culture
This art installation happened during the summer of 2013 and included campers, staff and board members of Lime Hollow Center for Culture and Environment. The oldest campers helped in the harvesting of the trees and used draw knives to peel the poles. I hope that if you are in the Central New York area that you take the time to walk the trail and see them for yourself.
