TRINCOMALEE, SRI LANKA - From Batticaloa, we continued our trip in Sri Lanka up the coast to Trincomalee, a wonderful town known for its beaches, seafood, and lagoons. Some of the best crabs in Sri Lanka come from Trincomalee. Much of the culture and people of Trincomalee are Tamil, and the food and culture reflects that.
King of Crabs - First we went to visit the main crab dealer of Trincomalee where he pulled out some fresh crabs from the lagoon. We ended up buying 3 KG of crab - 5,500 LKR ($30.68) to bring back to the house to cook.
At the house, the family had already prepared a selection of Sri Lankan Tamil food dishes, that were vibrant and ready to be eaten, but they immediately got started cooking the crab. The crab cooking was simple, but heavily relied on their own family blend of masala spice mixture.
All the dishes were served over a banana leaf plate, each with its own color and vibrancy. It was an incredible meal, so much delicious food and such a variety. I loved it. It was a perfect was to spend a day learning about Sri Lankan Tamil food in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.
Thank you to everyone who generously hosted me in Trincomalee, for the delicious food, and to Ruzaina for arranging everything. Go check out here videos:

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA - Sri Lankan food is known for crabs, and you’ll find some of the best mud crabs you’ll ever try in Sri Lanka. One of the top places to eat Sri Lankan crab curry is The Station, a seafood restaurant and bar along the ocean in Colombo. During out best of Sri Lankan food tour ( this was the first meal we had, and it was outstanding.
I met up with Uchith ( Nick ( and Lakki ( who showed me the restaurant and took me to the kitchen to watch as they made their entire family recipe for Sri Lankan crab curry, using huge 1.5 kg. Sri Lankan mud crabs. It was fascinating and a learning experiences to watch all the different steps and the complicated ingredients used in their recipe.
As I kept watching the Sri Lankan crab curry being made, I could hardly contain my excitement or mouth juices!
Our entire group came, and they started bringing out more dishes - not just the Sri Lankan crab curry, but river prawns fried in black pepper, and spiny lobster hollowed out and re-added to its shell. It was stunningly good. Along with Sri Lankan food, The Station also has a few of their own unique, Sri Lankan fusion seafood dishes, including favorites like hot butter squid.
Sri Lankan crab curry - we had one pan of their original Sri Lankan family recipe crab curry, and one pan of their extra spicy crab curry. Both were outstanding, but I loved the original for the spice blend and balance and how all the juices soaked up into the crab, it was outstanding.
The Sri Lankan food and crab curry was outstanding, the people, our entire group, and the owners of The Station are incredible people as well. Thank you to The Station, Nick, Uchitch and Lakki.

Thuna Paha Restaurant - For dinner we went to a Sri Lankan restaurant that serves a variety of Sri Lankan food. Again, their crab curry was delicious, but totally different, and they also served pork black curry which was outstanding.

SRI LANKA: EAST COAST ROAD TRIP Jaffna | Trincomalee | Batticaloa | Passikudah | Arugam Bay
Exploring secret beaches, stunning food, temples, wildlife and surfers’ paradise on the undiscovered side of Sri Lanka. Read the full story here:
Sri Lanka is well-known as an island of contrasts. Thanks to a unique blend of climates, characters and cultures, visitors here can be sunbaked on a sweep of golden sand in the morning and, by afternoon, be pulling on a sweater in the mist-swirled, Scottish Highland-like peaks of Tea Country. I mean, where else on the planet can you watch blue whales in the Indian Ocean and wander around a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the same day? Even so, nowhere in Sri Lanka quite illustrates this island’s amazing contrariness like its coasts.
The west coast really needs no introduction. Buoyed by the close proximity of the island’s main gateway – Bandaranaike International Airport – it forms the backbone to most holiday checklists, featuring, as it does, some of Sri Lanka’s seminal tourist sights. From the beach resorts of Negombo and its hectic capital, Colombo, all the way down to the always-popular historic port and fort of Galle, it is a well-known and deservedly popular honeypot for travelers.
The east coast is the mirror opposite. Requiring a little more dedication to reach, it remains largely untouched and tourist-free, with the exception of its world-renowned surf Mecca – Arugam Bay. But aside from this enclave of hip boarders, those searching out a more serene and undiscovered experience of Sri Lanka should try weaving their way from Jaffna in the north to Okanda in the south, taking in Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Passikudah and Pottuvil. It’s a stunning ride and a legacy of the civil war is that the roads have been updated and repaired recently, meaning mostly frictionless flow from top to bottom, which is a rarity elsewhere on the island. The best way to experience it all is by car or van, with drivers and vehicles cheap to commission and giving travellers the chance to gape in wonder at the scenery and life drifting past the window.
Along the way, the east coast’s breathtaking array of temples, islands, wildlife parks and beaches reveal themselves to just as impressive as their west coast counterparts. Far more so, some would say. The major difference is that they are wonderfully quiet, retaining that sense of realness and character that is conducive to any true travel adventure. The differences don’t stop with ambience either. When the monsoon rains hammer the west coast, the east is bathed in sunshine. Aficionados of Sri Lankan cuisine will also note subtle shifts in spices and style that mean the food here is unlike the rest of the island. There are changes in the dialects of those cooking it too. This is because the west coast is largely Sinhalese, whereas the string of towns and villages on the east is mostly populated by Tamil and Muslim communities.
So for anyone seeking serenity, variety, character and off-the-beaten-path adventure, here’s our guide to Sri Lanka’s ultimate east coast road trip.

Nelum Kole Restaurant - To begin the day we started off at Nelum Kole Restaurant, a Sri Lankan food restaurant serving a massive buffet of different Sri Lankan food dishes. Overall, the food was good, but not the best Sri Lankan food I had. Flavors tasted too similar to each other. It is a good place to taste variety though.
Dilmah Tea Lounge - After lunch we headed to a Dilmah Tea Lounge and drank a few teas all of which were very good.
Ministry of Crab - Rated as one of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, Ministry of Crab is one of the most iconic restaurant serving seafood and especially Sri Lankan crabs in Colombo. It’s a high end restaurant, with prices that go with it, but I do have to admit that it was extremely tasty. The river shrimp, the black pepper crab was delicious. Price - about 30,000 LKR ($165.53) per OMG crab - I think it’s overpriced - but it is good.

Motorbike Adventure Mountains of Sri Lanka
■ SRI LANKA, ELLA: My stay in Yala's national park was over and I had to get back to the city of Kandy to give by my rental 'motorbike'. Not only did that mean I had to drive across more than half the country, but through some pretty treacherous curvy mountain roads as well.
This was going to take all day! So I set out at 7:00 from the national park direction North. I didn't plan on filming or documenting this journey. My mind was simply set on reaching Kandy before nightfall as my motorbike have no front lights and is generally unfit to even ride to your local corner store.
As soon as I reached the mountain range and the outskirts of Ella though, my plans changed....

BEAUTIFUL SRI LANKA - 2019
I spent 2 weeks travelling Sri Lanka this year. This is the highlight reel of these two weeks.
It is amazing to see how untouched the nature in this beautiful country still is. Travelling around the island with a private driver made for a unique experience as the most part of planning ahead was taken off of my hands but I could still alter the route as we went along.
On my round trip nature, landscape and temperature virtually changed every few hours of drive, from the highlands to the valleys of this magnificient country.
Seeing wildlife ranging from Elephants over Monkeys to Bluewhales were really just a few of the high points of this country. Taking in vistas from waterfalls to mile long beaches while enjoying a freshly brewed Sri Lankan Tea or a Lion Lager wasn't to shabby either. ;)
