Sri Maha Bodhi Tree Temple in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka
Anuradhapura and Sacred Bodhi Tree - Sri Lanka | Joe Journeys
Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of ancient Sri Lankan civilization.
Bodhi Tree Temple (The Sri Maha Bodhiya), is the second most sacred place in Sri Lanka, after the Sri Dalada Maligawa, or Temple of the Tooth, in Kandy. The Bodhi Tree is allegedly a cutting from the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment, and has been continuously guarded for over 2000 years, making it the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world. The temple complex is surrounded by walls, and is quite busy with monks and worshipers.

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Temple:
Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is the most sacred place in Anuradhapura. It is a raised platform in Mahameghawana Gardens which contains a branch of a fig tree (called Maha Bodhi in Buddhism) under which Mahatma Buddha is stated to have attained enlightenment (nirwan) in Buddha Gaya, India.
This tree (sapling) was planted here in 249 BC and is known as the oldest surviving tree in the world which has a known date of plantation. It was brought here by Sangamitta, daughter of Emperor Ashoka of India with great pomp and show 2500 years ago. Emperor Ashoka was himself present in the celebrations held at the Indian port of Tamalitta in which this sapling was dispatched to Sri Lanka in a ship. Sri Lankan King Devanam Piyatissa himself received the sapling at the Sri Lankan port with great honor and pageantry. While standing under this tree, I thought that it was like a ‘peepel’ tree. For about two billion people of the world, it is the most sacred tree and is called “Roots of Paradise on Earth” by Buddhists.
There is a temple just adjacent to the platform on which this tree is standing. This video pertains to the said temple.

ATTACK AT THE SRI MAHA BODHIYA new
The LTTE hijacked a bus May 14, 1985 and entered Anuradhapura. As the LTTE cadres entered the main bus station, they opened fire indiscriminately with automatic weapons killing and wounding many civilians who were waiting for buses.[1] LTTE cadres then drove to the Buddhist Sri Maha Bodhi shrine and gunned down nuns, monks and civilians as they were worshipping inside the Buddhist shrine.[2] Before they withdrew, the LTTE strike force entered the national park of Wilpattu and killed 18 Sinhalese in the forest reserve. The LTTE cadres massacred 146 Sinhalese men, women and children in Anuradhapura.

The Sacred Tree Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi
Must-see trees around the world - Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi
This sacred fig tree surrounded by temple walls is the oldest living tree planted by humans with a known planting date. That date: 249 B.C. What really catapults the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree into super-stardom, though, is its sacred history. It's believed by many to be from a cutting off the Sri Maha Bodhi tree in India, under which Buddha reached enlightenment. Today, Buddhist pilgrims and others from around the world make their way to the Mahamewna Gardens in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, to pay homage to this living spiritual symbol.
In the 3rd century BC, it was brought to Sri Lanka by Sangamitta Theri (Pali; Skt.: Sanghamitra), the daughter of Emperor Asoka and founder of an order of Buddhist nuns in Sri Lanka. In 288 BC it was planted by King Devanampiya Tissa on a high terrace about 6.5 m (21.3 ft) above the ground in the Mahamevnāwa Park in Anuradhapura and surrounded by railings. Several ancient kings have contributed in developing this religious site. King Vasabha (65 - 107 AD) placed four Buddha statues in four side of the sacred tree. King Voharika Tissa (214 - 236 AD) added metallic statues. King Mahanaga (569 - 571 AD) constructed a water canal around the sacred tree and King Sena II (846 - 866 AD) renovated it. Ruins of an ancient building called Mayura Pirivena (Mayura Monastery) have been found to the south-west of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, and the ruins of a stupa called Dakkhina Tupa (Southern Monastery) can be seen nearby.
According to the ancient chronicles in Sri Lanka, some walls and terraces had been built surrounding the sacred tree at some time in the past. Mahavamsa states that King Gothabhaya (249 – 262 AD) built a rubble wall. Dipavamsa reports that a rock-laid terrace and a lattice wall was built by King Kirthi Sri Meghavarna (302 - 330 AD)
The most revered Bo Tree ''Jayasrimaha Bodhiya
In Sri Lanka, there grows to this day, a tree, the oldest historical tree in the world which we know certainly to have been planted as a cutting from the Bodhi tree in the year 245 B.C.

The Sacred Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura is reckoned as the oldest surviving historical tree in the world.
Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi was brought to Sri Lanka by the Theri Sangamitta, daughter of Emperor Asoka and was planted in the Mahameghavana Park in Anuradhapura in 249 BC by King Devanampiyatissa.
Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi is said to be the southern branch of the Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya in India under which Lord Buddha attained bodhi or 'Awakening'. Two statues of Lord [Buddha] can be seen in the image-house; a stone-standing-statue is in the right side of the stone wall. The cobra-stone is a very rare creation, showing the embossed figure of cobra. Several monolith heads with plain incisions are in this religious site.
Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred fig tree in the Mahamewna Gardens, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is said to be the southern branch from the historical Sri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya in India under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment. It was planted in 288 BC,and is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date. Today it is one of the most sacred relics of the Buddhists in Sri Lanka and respected by Buddhists all over the world.
The other fig trees that surround the sacred tree protect it from storms and animals such as monkeys, bats, etc. In April 2014, the government banned all construction within 500 meters of the tree. Only construction that obviously will not harm the tree will be allowed.
Buddhists in the Island have had a practice of visiting and paying homage to the most sacred Bodhi tree. It is an annual custom for pilgrims from far-away villages to visit the city of Anuradhapura and to pay homage to the Sri Maha Bodhi. The caretaker of this site provides various offerings on a daily basis. The Buddhists in general have a strong belief that offerings made to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi have produced significant and positive changes in their life. It has also been customary for many Buddhists to make a special vow before the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi for the safe delivery of their babies without malformations and for many other cures. It has also been a long tradition among farmers around Anuradhapura to offer the Sri Maha Bodhi tree the rice prepared from their first paddy harvest. They strongly believe that such offerings lead to a sustained paddy production with the least sufferings from drought as well as pest attacks, including elephant damage.
Since then, this highly sacred Bodhi comparable to the living Buddha dwells there shining with glory. The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi of Anuradhapura is the oldest living tree of the whole world with a written history.
