rangasthala-Historical Place Near | CHICKKABALLAPUR | BENGALURU |
Rangasthala is situated near Chikkaballapura at a distance of around 59 kms from Bangalore. Rangasthala is situated on the way to Gauribidanur from Chikkaballapur (6 km). The main attraction of Rangasthala is a beautiful temple of Lord Ranganatha Swamy (lord Visnu).
There is a village called Thippenahalli where you find a gate (arch) with signboard of Rangasthala Temple, here you have to take the right turn. This place is popular among the locals so anybody can show the directions.
This is one of the oldest temples in Bangalore. Rangasthala is a wonderful example of art, the architecture will take you to the time gone by and the ruins of the place include the beauty of the place. A lot of the old architectures are overlapped with the new construction. But, the temple still wonderfully protects Sri Ranganatha Swamy of Ranganatha. The place is great for day trips.
The idols of lord Ranganatha at Rangastla, Srirangam and Srirangapatna were installed on same day and same time. The temple architecture is in Vijayanagar style. The Gopuram outside the temple was built by Vijayanagara Kings.
The garbhagriha of the temple appears similar to the form of a Bamboo Basket used in the village side. If you closely observe you can observe as if the garbhagriham is in the shape of a Bamboo Basket (Moongil Thathuin Tamil ,Sibir Thate in Kannada). People used to belive that Lord Rama offered the idol of lord Ranganatha (Lord Vishnu) in a Bamboo basket to Vibhishana (Brother of Ravana) during the Patabhisheka of Lord Rama.
Vibhishana was supposed to install this idol at Srirangam, but saptarishis (Saints) asked Vibhishana to install this idol of Lord Ranganatha with Bhoo devi and Neela Devi at Rangasthala. So the Lord appears as if he is in a Bamboo basket.
The idol of Ranganatha is 4.5 feet in length with Bhoo devi and Neela Devi sitting near the leg. Lord is in Yoga Nidra and his Shesha (Lord Vishnus Snake) is spreading his hoods like an umbrella and Vainatheyan is sitting below.
Like all other Vishnu temples, the temple at Rangasthala also has idols of Lord Chakrath Alwar, Ramanuja, Desikan and a beautiful and rare Vigraham of Nam Alwar.
In the wall there are Sapthrishis ,Brahma, Ashta Dhikbalakas, Rambha ,Urvashi ,Pancha Ayudham's etc. And it appears as if Lord is in Vaikunta and he is surrounded by all the gods. And All Devatha's etc they are doing Namaskaram to Lord.
The moorthy (ideol) is very beautiful and moorthy (ideol) looks as if Lord is in relaxed state. There is a majestic Ustava Moorthy with Ubhaya Nachiyars.
There are Vigraham's of Lord Chakrath Alwar, Ramanuja , Desikan and a beautiful and rare Vigraham of Nam Alwar. There are two ponds known as Shanka and Chakra Theertham respectively we cannot compare temple here and Srirangam and Srirangapatana but the temple and Moorthy is very beautiful. The Brahma Ustavam is celebrated in the Month of December. The best time to observe (Darshan) the Lord is during Thirumanjanam.
Lord Ranganatha Swamy (lord Visnu) is a Saligrama Moorthy and Saptharishi did the Prathistai (installed). Outside praharam and Gopuram etc were constructed by Vijayanagara Kings. There is a praharam around garbhagriha.

1200 years old Ranganathaswamy Temple, Magadi, Karnataka
A very ancient temple built by the Chaukyas and later improved by the founder of Bangalore - Kempe Gowda, is found close to Bangalore at Magadi.
It is said that VISHNU appeared to Sage Mandovi as a Swamaybhu Saligrama in the shape of Kurma (tortoise ).
Right behind this is a beautiful statue of Venkateshwara.
Behind structure is a Ranganthaswamy idol on the rock which is believed to be growing to this day! It is also called Beleyo Ranga in Kannada as the idol here keeps growing.
Also this is the only temple where Sri. Lakshmi is placed opposite to Sri Venkateshwara.
There's also a lovely idol of Ranganayaki.
