Subscribe: SNU's First Western Professor of Korean Traditional Music Hilary Finchum Sung - Family Trip to Jindo Island Professor Hilary Finchum Sung's life changed when she first heard Korean shaman music while studying at the Indiana University in the United States where she majored in ethnomusicology. In 2009 she became the first non-Korean professor to teach in the Department of Korean Traditional Music, Seoul National University, where she teaches world music, the theory of Korean music and ethnomusicology. She has also been learning the haegeum for several years now in order to better understand Korean music. She chose the haegeum because she played the violin as a child, but the two-stringed Korean instrument turned out to have a completely different charm from the western instrument. After she began learning Korean traditional music, Professor Hilary Finchum Sung has had her hands full, but her family always provides her with strong support. Last summer her entire family - her husband, daughter, twin sons and two dogs - visited Jindo Island, which is the third largest island in Korea after Jejudo and Geojedo. Jindo cap tivated their hearts with its beautiful landscape and its residents' love of art. Join us to see how Professor Hilary Finchum Sung and her family spent their time on the beautiful island of Jindo.
