Old Invercargill: St Mary's Basilica
Happy Heritage Month! With all the exciting events by Heritage South, the team at Old Invercargill and Whats On Invers wanted to get behind the glorious history of our region with a new video series. Each episode, Old Invercargill will feature a new icon of yesteryear, highlighting the beauty of Southland.
St. Mary's Basilica, Invercargill is a REAL Invercargill landmark. Opened on the 7th May 1905, it cost a mighty £11,000 to construct! Judging by the timeless result, it was money well spent. Rightfully recognised as a category 1 Historic Places Trust Act building, our basilica was most recently refurbished in 2007. With beautiful brickwork and the gorgeous Rose window to the south, St Mary's Basilica is a true heritage building.
In real life and in our video, you'll spot the graceful black backed gulls perching happily aboard the aluminium cross, over 40 metres above the lush green Otepuni Gardens :-)

Old Invercargill: Water Tower
Old Invercargill and Whats On Invers wanted to get behind the glorious history of our region with a new video series.
Each episode, Old Invercargill will feature a new icon of yesteryear, highlighting the beauty of Southland.
First up: our amazing Invercargill Water Tower! With construction beginning in 1888, our fair city gained a new source of pressurised water. However, we didn't all want to see a giant tank suspended some 42.6M high in the air! A compromise was reached, by surrounding the practical element within approximately 300,000 bricks! Necessity matched with elegance, the tower has since become THE distinctive landmark of Invercargill.
Our Water Tower had a touchup in 1989, although currently she stands closed to the public due to not meeting the current building safety codes. Would you love to climb the observation deck once more? Have you fond memories, and recollections of the Water Tower view? Please share in the comments below :-)
With thanks to Wrens Invercargill for their support for Old Invercargill.

Old Invercargill Southland Boys High School
Old Invercargill and Whats On Invers wanted to get behind the glorious history of our region with a new video series.
Each episode, “Old Invercargill” will feature a new icon of yesteryear, highlighting the beauty of Southland.
Southland Boys’ High School was founded in 1881 and, in 1926, the original brick building was opened on the present Herbert St site. This building is called the Pearce Block in memory of Mr T. Pearce who was rector from around 1904 to 1929.
Having produced 36 All Blacks, Southland Boys’ High note they have produced more captains of our national team than any other school in the land. What an absolutely brilliant record for a very distinguished piece of Invercargill history.
