Koddamunai bridge connects Puliyanthivu island to the rest of Batticaloa main land. Before the koddamunai bridge was constructed, Batticaloa gate area was used at a loading and unloading point. Old cranes used during that time is still visible at the location. It is believed that William Ault, the first Methodist missionary landed in Puliyanthivu. A statue is placed next to the Batticaloa gate to remember is valuable service.

Sri Lanka: Catholics observe first Sunday mass since Colombo bombings

Security forces stood guard as hundreds of worshippers attended the first Sunday mass at St. Lucia's Cathedral in Colombo after the Easter Sunday bombings claimed 253 lives in April.
Security personnel patrolled the premises and attendees were reportedly searched and frisked for explosives.
The bombings in Sri Lanka on April 21 killed 253 people and injured more than 450 in eight seemingly coordinated explosions that rocked hotels and churches across the country.
Six blasts took place in the Sri Lankan capital while two further explosions occurred in the western city of Negombo and the eastern city of Batticaloa.

இலங்கை, மட்டக்களப்பு, அமிர்தகழி புனித கப்பலேந்தி அன்னை ஆலயம். 1808 ல் கட்டப்பட்டது. சுமார் 200 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் இந்த ஊரில் இரண்டே இரண்டு கத்தோலிக்க குடும்பங்கள் மட்டும் வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர். அந்த குடும்பம் தற்போது ஆலயம் இருக்கும் இடத்திலேயே ஒரு சிறிய குடிசை அமைத்து அதில் ஒரு சிறிய மாதா சுருவத்தை வைத்து வணங்கி வந்தனர். ஒரு காலகட்டத்தில் கோவா நாட்டில் இருந்து ஒரு போத்துக்கேயர் கப்பல் ஒன்று திருகோணமலை துறைமுகத்தை நோக்கி சென்று கொண்டு இருந்தது. அந்தக் கப்பலில் ஒரு புயல் அனர்த்தம் ஒன்று ஏற்பட்டு அந்தக்கப்பல் சிக்கிக்கொண்டது. அப்போது அந்த கப்பலில் இருந்த மாலுமியும் தலைவரும் எவ்வளவு சிரமப்பட்டும் அந்த கப்பலை கட்டுப்படுத்த முடியாமல் சிக்கித்தவித்தனர். அந்தக் கப்பலில் வணங்குவதற்காக கொண்டு சென்ற மாதா சுருவத்தை கட்டி அணைத்தபடி தமது உயிருக்காக போறாடினர். எதிர்பாராத விதமாக திடிரென கப்பலின் தலைவரினால் கரையில் இருந்து ஒரு ஒளியைக்கண்டார். அதன் பின்னர் அந்தக்கப்பலை அந்த ஒளியை நோக்கி செலுத்தி கரையை வந்தடைந்தார். அப்போது இந்த புயலில் இருந்து பாப்பாற்றியதற்கு கடவுளுக்கு நன்றி சொல்ல கப்பலில் இருந்து இறங்கிய போது. இங்கு இருந்த ஓலைக்குடிசையில் ஒரு மாதாவின் சுருவமும் அதன் அருகில் ஒரு சிறிய மெழுகு வத்தி எரிந்துகொண்டு இருப்பதைக்கண்டு மாதாதான் எங்களை காப்பாற்றி இருக்கின்றார் என்று நினைத்து இந்த இடத்திற்கு சொந்தமானவரை அழைத்து பேசினார். நாங்கள் இந்த மாதாவிற்க நன்றி செலுத்துவதற்காக இவ்விடத்தில் ஒரு ஆலயத்தை அமைக்க தங்களின் அனுமதியை கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். அதன்பின்னர் அந்த கப்பலில் கொண்டு வந்த மாதா சுருவத்தை அந்த குடிசையில் வைத்து ஒரு நேர்த்திக்கடனை வைத்தார்கள். நாங்கள் சென்று திரும்பி வரும்போது அன்னைக்கு இவ்விடத்தில் ஒரு ஆலயம் அமைப்போம் என்று நினைத்து அவர்கள் சென்று திரும்பி அதன்படி வந்து கட்டிடப்பொருட்கள் எல்லாம் கொண்டு வந்து இதில் ஒரு சிறிய ஆலயத்தை அமைத்தார்கள். இங்கு கட்டப்பட்ட ஆலயம் செங்கற்கலால் கட்டப்பட்டது அல்ல சுண்ணாம்புக்கற்கலால் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது.
இதுவே இந்த ஆலயம் உருவாகிய வரலாறாக கூறப்படுகின்றது.

Woman loses entire family in SLanka church bombing
(24 Apr 2019) Before the undertakers could move in, Anusha Kumari wrested herself away from her sisters and flung herself on the three coffins, wailing.
In an instant on Sunday, the 43-year-old woman was left childless and a widow when suicide bombers launched a coordinated attack on churches and luxury hotels in and near Sri Lanka's capital of Colombo.
The toll was highest at St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo.
Of the more than 350 people killed by the suicide bombings that the government blamed on Muslim extremists, about a third of them died at the church in the seaside fishing town while attending Easter Mass.
And perhaps no one lost more relatives than Kumari, whose daughter, son, husband, sister-in-law and two nieces were killed.
They were buried three days later near the church on some vacant land that has quickly become a cemetery for the victims.
Kumari, who is still injured from the blast, left the hospital to bury her family.
Afterward, she reclined in a cane chair at her home, hooked up to an IV dangling from an open window.
Gauze bandages covered the bridge of her nose and her right eye.
There was still shrapnel in her face.
A photo of her children was on the wall, while on the shelf were small statues of Jesus, Mary and St. Sebastian, an early Christian martyr riddled with wounds from Roman arrows.
She could see her son's drum kit on the upstairs landing, a gift from his father after doing well on exams, and a school portrait of her daughter.
All day, relatives, neighbors and nuns wandered in and out of the large house, offering food, consolation and prayer.
I had a wonderful family and two beautiful children, and a good husband, Kumari said. We had 24 years of married life without any issues.
Tears mixed with blood from her bandaged right eye.
During the funeral at the makeshift cemetery near St. Sebastian's, where mourners had to pass through security checks, a military drone buzzed overhead as the Rev. Niroshan Perera led prayers for the dead.
Perera, who grew up with Kumari's husband, Dulip Appuhami, and his siblings, recalled going as a boy with his friends and family to the church's well, where the faithful believed the water could cure them of diseases.
When the funeral ended, Perera encouraged everyone to go home quickly, fearing another attack.
Perera, who lost 16 relatives and friends in the blast, said he no longer trusted the Sri Lankan government to protect his flock.
