The Amazing Wooden Church of Balestrand
Balestrand cast a hypnotic spell over Joyce Williams and myself on the third day of our Norwegian tour. And that amazing wooden church was a revelation, almost Thai in some aspects of its design. Then up into the snows for the next leg of our journey. As ever, we seemed to have the road largely to ourselves. Our last port of call was a curious art gallery, whose portraits suddenly seemed to produce a live specimen when we sought directions.

Historic Bell to Ring in Christmas Tree Buyers
COURTENAY - A Comox Valley Christmas tree retailer believes he has a new addition that will help ring in new customers - an historic church bell that has now been raised high above his business.
Mountain Ridge Tree Farms owner Erich Penner says he likes to do new things around the farm in order to give customers, especially children, something to look at. He's now had crews lift a 227kg or 500lb bell onto the top of a specially built bell tower attached to his building.
The bell was obtained from his friend Vaughn Anderson who rescued it from an abandoned church near the Skeena River. Anderson says the church was damaged by fire and the tower was just about depleted so he removed the bell and brought it to the Comox Valley by fishing vessel.
The actual date isn't known but it is believed to have been cast in 1929.

High Mass at St. Paul Catholic Church, Bergen, Norway
September 6, 2016
The 11 a.m. Norwegian Mass at St. Paul Catholic Church in Bergen, Norway is described by the parish as a “high” Mass. It is the Pauline (post-Vatican II) liturgy, celebrated with a great deal more pomp than is typical in most contemporary parish Pauline liturgies. A number of elements of the liturgy are in Latin (and the Kyrie is in Greek) rather than Norwegian, and some parishioners said that this functions to give the liturgy more of a “universal” feel that unites a polyglot community. Hymnody is an especially important aspect of this liturgy, a bridge between Catholic and Norwegian traditions. Taken together, many liturgical elements and the choral music give a traditional feel to the liturgy, but there are also important elements, like the presence of altar girls, that were not traditional.
