The Sognefjord , Norway is the most beautiful travel destinations in the world
The Sognefjord extends from the coast, just north of Bergen, to the mighty mountains of the Jotunheimen National Park and the blue ice of the Jostedalsbreen National Park.
At its deepest, Sognefjorden plunges to more than 1,300 metres and the mountains along the fjord rise to more than 1,700 metres. The most narrow and famous fjord arm, Nærøyfjorden, is only 250 metres wide at its narrowest. Since 2005, Nærøyfjorden has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it has also been rated by the National Geographic Society as the world's number one natural heritage site along with the Geirangerfjord.
Other picturesque and well-known fjord arms are the Lusterfjord, Fjærlandsfjord and the Finnafjord. These fjords often have a beautiful emerald green colour because of the meltwater from the glaciers.
There are strong food traditions in the Sognefjord area, and the good climate, fresh air and abundance of lush mountain pastures mean that the Sognefjord area produces some of the best fresh ingredients around.
The area is particularly well known for the high quality of its fruit, berries, lamb, game, mountain trout and goat cheese.
The mountain areas surrounding the innermost part of Sognefjorden are among Norway's most popular hiking areas. The most famous mountain areas are Jotunheimen National Park, Jostedalsbreen National Park, Breheimen, the Aurlandsdalen valley and the Utladalen valley. Besides hiking, other popular activities in area include rafting, mountaineering, rock climbing, summer skiing and mountain biking.
The approximately 30,000 inhabitants live together in small, idyllic villages along the fjords and in the valleys. Skjolden is the innermost village and home to around 200 people.
