The story of St.Mina and his monastery :
St.Mina was born to a family from Nikeos, Capital of Upper Egypt, his father was a governor of the African state ,his mother Ophomea was barren and she implored Saint Mary to intercede with Christ The Lord on her behalf to bear a child.' Amen', came a voice from the Virgin's icon. In 286 AD. She got Mena and brought him up a devout Christian.
He joined the Roma Military and after his father's death ,he was appointed by the governor as his deputy army leader.
On the Roman Emperor Diocletian denial of Christ ,Mena distributed his wealth and left for the desert in pursuit of a hermit life of prayer. five years later he saw martyrs crowned in open heaven and decided to return home to confess his faith in Christ. Not swayed by persecution .St.Mena was beheaded in 309 A.C,the persecuting leader then threw the saint's body into the fire where it stayed untouched for three days.
Later the body was moved to Maryut in western desert near Alexandria .As a result of many miracles worked through his body, a city developed around the shrine of st.Mena .
In 1959 ,Pope Kyrillos VI established the modern monastery of st.Mena next to the remains of the historical city ,and the area has since started to regain its former glory . The remains of the city was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
the new monastery is a Coptic Orthodox monastery located in the Western Desert near Alexandria contains several churches ,the most famous the building of Cathedral of St.Mena which its consecration was on Monday 10 January 2005,one of the biggest cathedral in north Africa .
St. Mina Monastery in Alexandria&Albayad - Bekhit Fahim
Saint Menas (also Minas, Mina, Mena, Mennas) (285 -- c. 309), the Martyr and Wonder-worker, is one of the most well-known Egyptian saints in the East and the West, due to the many miracles that are attributed to his intercession and prayers. His feast day is celebrated every year on 15 Hathor (November 24) in the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria and on November 11 in the West and East. Although Menas is recognised as a minor saint in the Eastern Orthodox and Western churches, it is considered likely by many historians that he is celebrated in these churches under the name of Saint Christopher (i.e. the Christ-bearer), as one of the legends associated with Menas has him, like Christopher, carrying the Christ-Child.
The Monastery of Saint Mina is a Coptic Orthodox monastery located in the Western Desert near Alexandria. The modern monastery is built close to the ruins of Abu Mena, the original pilgrimage site, which was destroyed by the Arabs during the Muslim conquest of Egypt of the mid-7th century.Following the execution of Saint Mina, his sister brought his body to a church in Alexandria. When the time of persecution ended, during the papacy of Pope Athanasius of Alexandria, an angel appeared to the Pope and ordered him to load the saint's body on a camel and head towards the Western Desert. At a certain spot near a water well at the end of Lake Mariout, not far from Alexandria, the camel stopped and wouldn't move. The Christians took this a sign from God and there buried Saint Mina's body after placing it in a silver coffin. The coffin was later placed inside decay-resistant wood and buried at the same location.
During the early fifth century, the body's location was forgotten. Years later, a shepherd was feeding his sheep in that location, and a sick lamb fell on the ground. As it struggled to get on its feet again, its scab was cured. The story spread quickly and the sick who came to this spot recovered from whatever illnesses they had just by lying on the ground. During that time, the daughter of Zeno, the Christian Byzantine emperor, was leprous. His advisors suggested that she should try that place, and she did. At night Saint Mina appeared to the girl and informed her that his body was buried in that place. The following morning, Zeno's daughter was cured, and she related her vision about the saint to her servants.
Zeno immediately ordered Mina's body to be dug out, and a cathedral to be built there. A large city was also built there and named after the saint. Sick people from all over the world used to visit that city and were healed through the intercessions of Saint Mina, who became known as the Wonders' Maker. Today, numerous little clay bottles on which the saint's name and picture are engraved are found by archeologists in diverse countries around the Mediterranean world, such as Heidelberg in Germany, Milan in Italy, Dalmatia in Croatia, Marseille in France, Dongola in Sudan, and the holy city of Jerusalem. Visitors would buy these bottles, usually containing oil or water for blessing, and take them back to their relatives.
