Stadsaal Caves at Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve - Cederberg
The Cederberg is renowned for its spectacular landscapes and the sense of solitude they inspire. Sandstone caves and rocky overhangs shelter some of the region's finest examples of ancient San rock art.
At Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve the eerie Stadsaal rock formations are found, where the presence of people long gone is still palpable. It is here, too, not far from the Stasaal Caves that the evocative elephant rock painting is found.

Vol. II - CEDERBERG
CAPE SECRETS
Cederberg is a massive nature reserve located near Clanwilliam, roughly 300km from Cape Town. Fun fact the area is names after the endangered Clanwilliam cedar tree. It’s a beautiful mountainous area well worth a visit. we started our trip at the Kagga Kamma resort, a secluded 15,000 hectares located in the centre of the Cederberg region. It’s a beautiful and remote place, equipped with outdoor beds, hand-crafted cave suits and traditional huts.
For the second part of our journey we drove a few hours towards the coast to the Gecko Creek wilderness Lodge. It’s a beautiful self-catering camp that borders on the Cederberg reserve. This lodge was my personal favourite, because it’s so close to a variety of activities, like the mighty Algeria waterfalls, the beautiful crystal pools and the historical stadsaal cave formations, it’s here where you can see the famous San Bushmen rock art.
I think the highlight of our trip had to be our visit to the Red Tea company, although we didn’t actually see any tea ha … the owner Johan Ferreira a former military pilot runs a passion project called ‘Mountain Air’, he graciously agreed to give us his very own tour of the Cederberg region, I don’t think any of us imagined we’d see Cederberg like this…

Cederberg is about 300km north of Cape Town. It has kilometers of untouched land, beautiful valleys and plenty of hikes and sights to explore.
Permits are required for the hikes and can be obtained from Algeria Forrest Station (They supply maps and directions to the various hikes):
The roads to the hikes are rather sandy and rocky. Most cars will survive it, but the bigger the car the more comfortable the ride.
Gecko Creek offers great off the grid accommodation. One can order meals from them which makes things a lot easier since there are no shops in close (or far) proximity. At night they have beanbags around a campfire where guests (mostly foreign) get lost under the African stars.

Stadsaal Caves Cederberg - 16 Scenes From a Visit Stadsaal Caves Cederberg
We spend a long weekend in the Cederberg. Hiking various places. Amongs other we hiked at Truitjieskraal.
Then we went to the Stadsaal Caves. I have been here often, so this time my focus was outside the majestic caves.
The Cederberg is special.

Cederberg - JAMAKA
Cederberg JAMAKA – Short highlights package of some of the things we got up to in the Cederberg at Jamaka.
Subscribe to my channel:
We had a great time camping at Jamaka in the Cederberg mountains over the summer holidays.
Below is some information regarding the beautiful place called Jamaka
Jamaka Organic Farm and Resort belongs to the Nieuwoudt family since 1755. Jamaka is situated on the farm Grootkloof, currently the only certified organic farm in the Ceder mountains. Rooibos tea and various mango and citrus varieties constitute the primary crops of the farm.
The agricultural activities on the farm commenced in the 1950’s with the establishment of a nursery and the planting of citrus trees. The organic status of the farm ensures that no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are used in the production of any crop.
The farm started adapting its original agriculture-only charter when the Nieuwoudt family decided to rent out three chalets in 1998. A year later they added the necessary facilities in order to establish camping grounds along the river. Through time Jamaka became a popular holiday and accommodation destination in the Cederberg area and subsequently more cottages were added while the camping grounds were expanded to increase their original capacity.
Jamaka currently features ten fully-equipped self-catering chalets with capacities ranging from two to sixteen people per house respectively. There are currently eighty-three campsites available for campers to choose from while new sites are being added from time to time.

Cederberg Sojourn
A week's worth of wandering amongst the lunar rock formations and stark landscapes of the Cederberg Mountains in South Africa. And it's just a few hours away from Cape Town. Go already!
TAKE NOTE: Fire season is in full swing so don't make open fires in the reserve (as per permit conditions).
Cederberg Wilderness Area - Year in the Wild
A four-minute video featuring the Cederberg Wilderness Area, a CapeNature conservation zone which protects some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in South Africa. Situated about three hours north-east of Cape Town, this 71 000-hectare reserve is a true wilderness area, where it's possible to hike for several days without seeing anyone else.
The Cederberg mountains are famous for their fantastic rock formations like the Maltese Cross and Wolfberg Arch, while in the numerous caves and overhangs you may see some of the finest - and oldest - examples of rock art in Africa. Then there are several thousand species of plants and animals, including rare examples of mountain fynbos like the snow protea, and the beautiful yet endangered Ceder tree.
The diminutive Cape leopard still thrives in these mountains, but don't expect to see one of these secretive predators anytime soon. More likely you will see black eagles soaring overhead - the Cederberg hosts one of the biggest and healthiest populations of these imperious raptors. The river systems are special too: there exists in these mountains the greatest diversity of endemic fish, south of the Zambezi River. There are at least eight species of fish in the Cederberg's catchment which are found nowhere else on earth. Yet most of these are under threat of extinction, because of alien fish like small-mouth bass, and invasive, non-indigenous trees which deplete water supplies. Fortunately, CapeNature and their partners are making great strides to rectify the situation.
I visited the Cederberg as part of my Year in the Wild journey to 31 of South Africa's most special nature reserves, and it remains one of my favourite wild areas, even though it's only a few hours drive from the second biggest city in South Africa.
