The Great Escape Camp
Video profile on the Great Escape Camp - Stalag Luft III in Zagan, Poland. Originally part of Upper Silesia, Germany, this was a POW camp for captured Allied airmen during World War II. The so-called Great Escape took place during the night of 24-25 March, 1944. RAF Squadron Leader Roger Bushell conceived and organized a massive escape of 200 prisoners; although different factors delayed the escape and only 76 got out of the 334-foot long tunnel, dug 30 feet below the surface. Out of those who experienced brief freedom, only three men made it to safety. Everyone else was re-captured, rounded up, and 50 men were executed by the GESTAPO. The story was the subject of many books and films, including John Sturges' The Great Escape (1963). Visit Stalag Luft III in Zagan, Poland on Alpventures Wolf's Lair Tour. Imprisoned during World War II in a German POW camp, a group of Allied soldiers are intent on breaking out, not only to escape, but also to draw Nazi forces away from battle to search for fugitives. Among the prisoners determined to escape are American Captain Virgil Hilts (Steve McQueen) and British Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett (Richard ...The Great Escape took place on the night of 24 March 1943. 76 prisoners escaped through a 110 meters long tunnel named “Harry” in Stalag Luft III. After the alarm was raised and the hunt on the airmen seized only 3 escapees managed to stay out of German clutches, the other 73 were caught again and brought back to the camp. Hitler personally ordered the infamous “Sagan Befehl”. Ordering all 73 to be shot, as well as camp commandant Lindeiner who designed the camp. It is said that due to the interference of Herman Göring this number was reduced to 50. Field Marshal Keitel, Major-General Westhoff and Major-General Graevenitz all argued against this order for it was in conflict with the Geneva convention.

Stalag Luft III (German: Stammlager Luft, or primary camp for aircrew) was a Luftwaffe-run prisoner-of-war camp during World War II that housed caught air force servicemen. It remained in the German district of Lower Silesia near the town of Sagan (now Żagań in Poland), 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Berlin. The website was chosen since it would be challenging to run away by tunneling.
The camp is most ideal understood for two famous prisoner escapes that took location there by tunneling, which were depicted in the films The Fantastic Escape (1963) and The Wooden Horse (1950), and guides by former prisoners Paul Brickhill and Eric Williams from which these movies were adjusted.
The camp was extremely safe. Despite being an officers-only camp, it was referred to as a Stalag camp rather than Oflag (Offizier Lager) as the Luftwaffe had their own nomenclature. Later camp expansions added compounds for non-commissioned officers. Captured Fleet Air Arm (Royal Navy) crew were considered to be Air Pressure by the Luftwaffe and also no differentiation was made. At times non-airmen were interned.
The first compound (East Compound) of the camp was completed and opened on 21 March 1942. The first prisoners, or kriegies, as they called themselves (from Kriegsgefangene), to be housed at Stalag Luft III were British and Commonwealth airmen along with Fleet Air Arm officers, arriving in April 1942. The Centre compound was opened on 11 April 1942, initially for British sergeants but by the end of 1942 replaced by Americans. The North Compound for British airmen, where the Great Escape occurred, opened on 29 March 1943. A South Compound for Americans was opened in September 1943 and USAAF prisoners began coming to the camp in significant numbers the following month and the West Compound was opened in July 1944 for UNITED STATE officers. Each compound included fifteen solitary story huts. Each 10-by-12-foot (3.0

The Great Escape Harry Tunnel, Stalag Luft III, on the Escape Anniversary March 2010
On the night of March 24/25th 2010 we visited the scene of the famous Great Escape at Stalag Luft III, in Sagan, Germany, now located in Zagan, Poland. We were alone in the woods and all we could hear was the sounds the chaps heard back in '44 - the bark of dogs at the station in the distance, the wind in the trees, the goods trains rumbling slowly through the train station beyond the woods - and up above the starry sky. Here we start in Hut 104 and walk the length of the tunnel.
