Standup Paddling in the Keys 2012
So, it was getting cold with winter approaching this November and instead of going to the mountains Brenda wanted more time SUP'ing in warm water.....so south we went. We spent 4 days in the Keys kicked back and chillaxing with warm clear water to standup paddle in and great food and drinks afterwards. We've not spent time in the Keys before....now we definitely want to go back. Most beaches are rock....but you can find sand beaches if you look around. State Parks like Bahia Honda and Zachary Taylor have nice sand beaches perfect for swimming and SUP....and there are others..... Plus, paddling through the mangroves was an awesome experience on Sugarloaf Creek at Sammy Creek Landing. The GoPro fogged up so we can't show you how neat it is in there.....so go paddle it for yourself! :) The music in the video is by Jack Johnson and Slightly Stoopid. Hope they don't mind me using their tunes.

Perdido River Trail Part 1
Going on foot to the Perdido Trail trailhead at Blue Pond Landing, The hiking trail follows the Perdido River that borders western Florida and southern Alabama through a pretty vast wildlife management area. Last time I tried to get here my truck got stuck. I got kind of a late start and fortunately got some tips on how to better access the area. I'll be going deeper soon. Please stay tuned. Sorry about the shaky-cam folks. Still haven't repaired my main camera.

Nocqua night adventure ecotour Pine Island Paradise Paddling
Trying out the new GoPro camera on the Nocqua night tour. Fish swimming under kayaks and stand up paddle boards. Saw a 3ft plus snook and some nice redfish. We had crazy needlefish jumping onto our sups. A unique way to experience nature.
Adventures In The Florida Keys Part Sixty Three Carls Aquarium
Paddle Board Adventures - A Bright Great Bay
La Mer by Claude Debussy set the tone for our Miami adventure, paddle boards in tow! We explored La Mar Lake and Shrimper's Lagoon, right beside Virginia Key’s coastal hammocks. No manatee, bottle nose dolphin or loggerhead sea turtle sightings but we did find a Blue Heron and heard some other bird songs. Gulf Fritillaries, Giant Swallowtails, Pine Siskin, Tennessee Warbler, Swainson’s Thrush, Indigo Bunting? I have some research to do! We heard a man whistling in the brush too! It was an amazing day with Megan Chartier and Bruce LaFollette! Megan's first time paddle boarding and my first attempt at yoga at sea. Bruce's navigation skill were unparalleled! Our dinghy tour included a motor out North Cut to see Fisher Island Marina, an epic entrance into Government Cut and a little trip around Star, Hibiscus and Palm Island.
At the start of April in 1513, Juan Ponce de León leads an expedition from Spain landing in “La Florida”. He writes of discovering a “bright nameless great bay and fresh springs” just a short time later. Interestingly enough our day over Biscayne Bay took place around the same time, 504 years later. Biscayne Bay is 35 miles long and 8 miles wide and in 1975 was designated as a state aquatic preserve.

Launched from Sombrero Beach here in Marathon, went down Sister's Creek and then paddled through the beautiful and quiet mangrove tunnels of the (mostly) undeveloped Boot Key.

Florida Keys Wooden Boat Fishing, Me and my stuff:
My Boats:
The original single seater Kayak is a Great Auk designed by Nick Shade of Guillemot Kayaks and built by me with my own two hands. It’s 16 1/2 feet long (the design is 17 feet, but I scaled it to fit in the garage I built it in) and 24 inches wide. This was the first boat I ever built.
“Tiny” the double kayak is another Nick Shade design (Micro Bootlegger) and was also built by me. Videos of the later parts of the build are on my channel for your perusal (don’t forget to like and comment). It’s 18 feet long and 28 inches wide, for a stable and roomy ride, even with a bunch of fishing stuff riding along with me (or a second person).
When I add the outrigger (which is just one of the pontoons off my Catamaran) I can include the Suzuki 2.5HP outboard to make tracks.
My “Three Week Canoe” was, once again, built by yours truly, and you can see the entire build in my award winning video series “The Three Week Strip Canoe Build”. Available on a computer screen near you. The design is the classic “Puddle Duck” by Gil Gilpatrick.
Last but not least (just kidding, yes it is), is my experimental and highly controversial “Stand Up Paddle Pontoon Catamaran Mini Party Barge”. Built AND designed by me, with no help or consultation of any kind from anyone. Which may explain why it confuses the hell out of anyone who sees it. It looks like a toy, paddles like a toy (but a really cool toy) and, best of all, is just plain fun.
My Bike:
My bike is a Schwinn (don’t you just love saying that?) Meridian Trike, because nothing says secure in his masculinity like riding down the side of US1 on a tricycle (I’m thinking of starting a trike club, we’ll get heavy leather jackets and sweat a lot, how cool am I?). Mine is tricked out with an LED headlight for early morning rides, a gigantic basket to hold all of my stuff, and four custom made PVC rod holders held on with the best hose clamps money can buy.
Fishing Gear:
My gear is mostly whatever cheap stuff I find at yard sales or on clearance, but when I buy quality it’s usually the Penn Fierce II series of spinning rod and real combos. What I like best about this Penn line is the name. Seriously, who doesn’t want to be “Fierce” (they work pretty well too). I’m also a fan of Mustad hooks (when I’m not cheating out and buying generics).
Cameras:
I have two primary cameras and a back up. The primaries are a GoPro Hero4 Black that I chose because someone offered it to me in trade for an arcade game I was trying to get rid of, and a GoPro Hero Session 4 that was a fathers day gift, so I will worship and treasure it forever (or until it quits working, whichever comes first). My backup camera is an iPhone 7 because, well duh, its got a camera built right in.
I do all of my editing on my iMac desktop computer because I’m old enough that I don’t just do it all on a laptop and I use the free GoPro Studio editing software because I’m cheap and don’t want to have to learn to use something better.
That’s me and my stuff. See you on the water.

Paddling Lovers Key
Stand up paddle boarding in Lovers Key State Park
Florida Keys Dove Sound in Tavernier. Snorkeling, paddle boarding & Mangrove snapper everywhere.
This is a great area to go paddle boarding in Tavernier. Beware the current gets pretty strong at times when the tide is changing. It's full of lots of marine life. Snapper, crab, lobster. We love packing a lunch and cooling off. No motors allowed.
4 day Kayaking Pack Out - Michigan here I come!
A Diary entry video for my records. I'm headed to Michigan's Manistee River for a 5 day 4 night kayaking trip. I'll be with my good buddy Darrel from 39camper channel
This is the first time I've done a 4 day pack out for the river.
Experience Bird Key, Miami FL
GPS: 25.8384° N, 80.1678° W
Just a short paddle away from the 79th street boat ramp lies a gorgeous island and grass flat known as Bird Key. If you can get close enough with your paddle board or kayak you will hear the calls of a wide variety of birds, hence the name - Bird Key.
The grass flat to the west is full of life including large schools of mullet, sting rays, bonnet head sharks, manatees and game fish such as trout, snook and the occasional redfish. You can also soak baits in the nearby channel for tarpon.
What I love about this island is just how much wildlife there is everyday. This is a great spot for you to make a day of fishing in Miami aboard your kayak, paddle board or boat. If you are in a big boat, be sure to stay close to the channel especially on the outgoing tide. And if you are in a kayak take a close look at the arial videography here as you can navigate many areas holding the fish and be stealthy about it.
Tight Lines,
Captain
