Rocky Bay - Rottnest Island
In the far north-western corner of Rottnest Island, 19kms off the coast of Perth in WA, in the vicinity of Narrowneck – a narrow stretch of land where you can see the ocean to the north and south from the top of the sandhills, are three relatively secluded bays. Rocky Bay, Marjorie Bay and Stark Bay. All have moorings and all are very popular in the summer season. For those who frequent these bays, which are all interconnecting, it’s their isolation from Thomson Bay, the main hub of the island, that is the major attraction.
Leaving from Thomson Bay you head in a northerly direction staying between the moorings and Transit bank. While you have reef on one side and shallow sand banks and reef on the other they are all easily visible so it is a relatively easy trip over a stunning piece of crystal clear water. You are also restricted to five knots until you pass the clear water to the north cardinal marker at Mushroom Rock. From there you need to head in north-westerly direction staying to the east of Duck Rock. Once in open waters it is open speed limit all the way to Rocky Bay.
On a good day the water on this side of the island is like a millpond. On a bad day, when a strong south-westerly breeze is blowing and the swell is up it can be extremely rough. Navigation into the bays is also quite tricky and treacherous, especially for the inexperienced so it needs care and caution.

ROTTNEST ISLAND WESTERN AUSTRALIA KEN AND MARGARET RICHMOND
2007 Rottnest Island (32°0′35″S, 115°31′5″E) is located 19 km off the coast of Western Australia, near Fremantle. The island is 11 kilometres long, and 4.5 kilometres at its widest point. The Western Australian vernacular diminutive is Rotto, or Rottnest. It has been an important holiday destination for over 50 years. A well-maintained wildlife preserve, Rottnest is popular with divers (the island and its surrounding reefs are littered with ship wrecks), surfers (there are several notable reef breaks at the west end of the island at Strickland Bay, Salmon Bay and Stark Bay), and recreational fishers. A snorkel trail at Parker Point features underwater interpretative plaques that give information about the very unusual marine environments surrounding Rottnest. The island is the southernmost point along the Western Australian coastline at which coral grows. Rottnest is one of the few areas in the world where the quokka can be found. This is largely due to the exclusion of feral cats and other animals such as foxes from the island. The island features historic buildings and pleasant beaches (all reachable via the many cycling tracks; cycling being the island's main mode of transport - private or hire cars are not allowed on the island). The main settlement is located at Thomson Bay, facing east towards Fremantle. Other settlements are located at Geordie Bay and Longreach. Rottnest Island has very few permanent residents with most island workers now commuting from the mainland. Features A quokka on Rottnest. A quokka on Rottnest. ROTTNEST PENAL COLONY WA WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Perth 2008 HISTORY
Aboriginal prison history
Ten Aboriginal prisoners were sent to Rottnest Island in August 1838. The Colonial Secretary announced in June 1839 that the island would become a penal establishment for Aboriginal people, and between 1838 and 1931, except for the period 1849 to 1855, Rottnest was used as an Aboriginal prison to pacify local natives. Aboriginal men were imprisoned for offences including spearing livestock, burning the bush or digging vegetables on what had been their own land.
It has been estimated that there may be as many as 369 Aboriginal graves on the island. Some 3,700 Aboriginal men and boys, from all parts of the state, were imprisoned.

Crayfishing - Rottnest Island
Western Rock Lobster are plentiful in and around Rottnest Island with many bays and reef areas holding good numbers of these tasty crustaceans. But you must remember there are strict rules and regulations in place to ensure there are plenty of crays around for future generations, so make sure you follow the rules. In brief, Crayfish can be caught in craypots or you can freedive, snorkel or SCUBA dive to catch them either by hand or using a snare. There are also restrictions on how many you can catch, when you can fish for them and how many craypots you can have per licence and on a recreational boat so ensure you are fully aware of these regulations before you head out fishing for them.
For those who do pursue Western Rock Lobster the rewards are great. They are delicious to eat and preparing them is relatively simple. Two of my favourite ways to eat them are either boiled whole in seawater or at least salty water. This is perhaps the most painless and simple way to prepare them and allows you to get the flavour of the lobster as is. The other favourite is to cook them halved on a barbeque with some garlic butter. To do this, first cut the lobster in half lengthways and the way from head to tail then clean out the internal organs located in the head leaving the meat in the tail as is. Then smear some garlic butter along the meat and cook shell side down on a hotplate to ensure the juices help keep the flesh moist. Once cooked through enough turn the cray over for a few quick minutes meat side down. Serve as is.
