-- About this video --
Today the weather is a bit rainy in Aoraki Mt Cook so we decide to spend the first part of the day at the Sir Edmund Hillary Centre in Mount Cook. The Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre is a small museum celebrating the achievements of Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand national icon, as well as other mountaineering achievements and lifestyle. The Hillary Centre also holds a few relics from the pioneering days of the Aoraki Mount Cook area.
When night falls we join Big Sky Stargazing Tours in the Hermitage Hotel for a stargazing tour in Mt Cook. First, we get an orientation of the night sky in the Hermitage Hotel planetarium before going onto a bus to the Big Sky stargazing secret stargazing spot complete with high powered telescopes. Stargazing in Mount Cook is particularly spectacular as the Aoraki Mt Cook National Park is in an International Dark Sky Reserve called the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. It has the darkest skies with the least light pollution for some awesome stargazing in New Zealand. The Big Sky Tour is worth considering for a stargazing tour in New Zealand.
So what do you think of the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre and the stargazing tour at the Hermitage Hotel? Would you add it to your Mt Cook travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

New Zealand Adventure Oct 2015
To celebrate my 60th birthday we visited the stunningly beautiful South Island of New Zealand. Starting in Christchurch we headed north to Kaikoura and then on to Blenheim to experience the best Sauvignon Blanc wines in the world. After visiting Tasman & Golden Bay we headed inland and south to the beautiful Hamner Springs. Then we took the trans Alpine route to Arthur's Pass and on to Hokitika on the West coast. The route from Franz Josef Glazier & Haast to Queenstown is probably the most scenic I've ever experienced full of Snow covered mountains and clear blue lakes. Unfortunately when we got to Milford Sound the weather was extremely wet and windy but I've never seen so many waterfalls in one place - literally hundreds! Lake Wakatipu is another glorious place. We then headed north to Twizel and Mount Cook National Park and the Tasman Glacier. Onto Mount John observatory on Lake Tekapo - the bluest lake I've ever seen. Our NZ adventure ended back in Christchurch where we had started. We did the trip in a RV and was just fantastic - tremendous freedom to go wherever we wanted and at our own pace. Highly recommended. On either side of our trip to NZ we visited Sydney & Dubai. We used a GoPro Hero 4 Silver to record our trip
Lake Tekapo Snow
From our October 2012 holiday to New Zealand.
After a night of steady rain, snow was forecast the following day, so we set the GoPro up to shoot a timelapse as the sleet turned into snow.
This is looking through our hotel room window, out into the car park (crappy hire Camry is ours).
Not long after this, we went outside for our first experience with snow!
LAKE TEKAPO | NEW ZEALAND
Lake Tekapo, a beautiful little city located in the South Island of #NewZealand. It is close to Mount Cook and offers breathtaking views throughout. There might not be a lot to do here, but it is a good choice if you just want to disconnect from everything else and reconnect with yourself or your family.
