Next destination for our New Zealand road trip was Queenstown so we were driving quite a lot this day. Out route included two very famous tourist attractions - Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki. Lake Tekapo is well-known because of its beautiful landscapes and the Church of the Good Shepherd - probably the most photographed place in Mackenzie and in New Zealand in general. Lake Pukaki has wonderful views to Mt. Cook and Southern Alps so it is popular among tourists. It also has very clean water going from the glacier so it is an experience to have a swim in it!
So, this day of driving gave us an opportunity to see two very iconic New Zealand attractions on our way to Queenstown. In next vlog we are going to Milford Sound, don't miss it!

Twizel /ˈtwaɪzəl/ is a town in the Mackenzie District, in New Zealand's South Island. Its residential population is 1,110 but in summer the population more than triples.
History
The present town was built in 1968 as a greenfields project to service the Upper Waitaki Hydroelectricity Scheme. The scheme consisted of 50 km of canals, two dams, and four powerhouses (Tekapo B, Ohau A, Ohau B and Ohau C) producing 848 MW of electricity. At the height of the project in the 1970s, had a population peaked of around 6,000.
The town was laid out in a 'Scandinavian' fashion, featuring looping roads and pedestrian ways, making it usually far more direct to walk than use a car. Shops, school, and recreational parkland formed a hub in the centre of the town, around which the residential area were built. A previous version of this layout had been tried at Otematata. Accommodation was highly segregated: in addition to single men's quarters in the middle of town, there was a series of different houses available, with the smallest for workers, staff houses for teachers and professionals, and the largest for engineers and other high-status residents.
As the intention was for the town to revert to farmland, there were many 'temporary' features. For example, instead of putting in kerbing, channels, and footpaths at the edge of the road, a single expanse of seal was contoured in a very flat 'W' shape: the seal was highest at the outer edge (footpath) and in the middle (centreline), with a lower area serving as a channel and delineation between the roadway and footpath. Likewise, most of the town's telephone local loop is strung above ground to save the task of burying and then removing the lines. Most houses were prefabricated, and intended to be portable. Some were brought from Otematata, and some were later moved to Clyde for the next hydroelectricity project. However in 1983, as the hydroelectric project was winding up, residents successfully fought to save the town itself.
Industries
Twizel is a now a service and tourist town for visitors. Nearby Lake Ruataniwha supports sailing, water skiing and prominent rowing events such as the Maadi Cup, while the Ohau Skifield and the Round Hill Ski Area attract winter tourists.
The area boasts one of the world's cleanest, driest and darkest skies, and has long drawn astronomers to Twizel and the surrounding area, with several existing astro-tourism ventures, such as at Lake Tekapo and Omarama, catering to their needs during the development of two additional observatories in Twizel and at Mount Cook Village. Since 2012, Twizel has been a part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark-Sky Reserve, one of only five such reserves in the world recognised by the International Dark-Sky Association.
Education
Twizel Area School is the sole school in Twizel, catering for Year 1 to 13 students (ages 5 to 18). Established in 1986 following the merger of Twizel Primary School and Twizel High School, the school has a roll of 182 students as of March 2014.

New Zealand: Lake Wanaka to West Coast
Traveling New Zealand's South Island: Lake Wanaka is a popular recreation destination, the town is quaint but modern with several lodge style accommodations ranging from affordable to high end. Eating out can get expensive here, if you're a budget traveler like us, opt for buying your own groceries, you'll find fair prices at the main grocery store, New World.
The area is gorgeous, stunning snow-capped mountains and lake views can be enjoyed from most areas in the town. If you're up for a hike, Mt Iron offers a 360 degree view of the area. If you prefer a gentle walk, the walk track along the lake is lovely. For rest and relaxation, the narrow stretch of sandy beach along the lake is a wonderful place to unwind.
After spending a couple of days in Lake Wanaka, we head north-west on HWY 6, through Haast Pass, to the west coast and north into glacier country.

Taupo is a town on the shore of Lake Taupo in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. It is the seat of the Taupo District Council and lies in the southern Waikato Region.
Taupo has a population of 23,100 (June 2013 estimate). In 1953, Taupo was officially constituted as a borough, but from 1989 it has been administered by the Taupo District Council, the district including both Taupo itself and the surrounding hinterland. Despite this, it is occasionally referred to as a city. It is the 20th largest urban area in New Zealand, and the second-largest in the Waikato Region (behind Hamilton).
The name Taupo, by which the town is commonly known, is the shortened version of its full name, Taupō-nui-a-Tia. Literally translated from Māori language, Taupō-nui-a-Tia means The great cloak of Tia, where Tia is the name of the discoverer of the lake.
In 2009 a team of Taupo citizens won the TV2 programme Top Town.
Geography
Taupo is located at the outlet of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, in the northeast part of the lake where it discharges to the Waikato River. The river flows over one of New Zealand's most spectacular waterfalls, Huka Falls, a short distance north of the town. Taupo is a centre of volcanic and geothermal activity and hot springs suitable for bathing are located at several places in the vicinity. The volcanic mountain of Mount Tauhara lies six kilometres (4 mi) to the east. Some forested area exists near Taupo, with understory vegetation consisting of certain shrubs and ferns.
Somewhat to the northeast are significant hot springs. These springs are the site of occurrence of certain extremophile micro-organisms, that are capable of surviving in extremely hot environments.

Taupo is situated on a stretch of State Highway 1, running concurrently with State Highway 5. It is situated 53 km North of Turangi. It is one of the few centres in New Zealand that were never linked to the rail network.
The small but growing satellite town of Kinloch, where a Jack Nicklaus golf resort is being constructed, is 20 kilometres west along the lake.

Nukuhau lies north of the Waikato River. To the south west lies Acacia Bay and to the south lies Taupo town centre.
Richmond Heights lies to the east of Rainbow Point and south of Mountain View. It is home to the Waipahihi Primary School, Richmond Heights shopping center, and the Waipahihi Botanical Gardens.

Rainbow Point . It lies north of Wharewaka and west of Richmond Heights. To the west lies Lake Taupo.
Tauhara lies just north of Hilltop and east of Mount View. Mount Tauhara lies just east of Tauhara. Tauhara is the location of Tauhara primary school, Tauhara College and Tauhara Golf course.
Hilltop lies south of Tauhara. Hilltop is the location of Hilltop School, Taupo Intermediate School, the Taupo Hospital, the Taharepa shopping centre and the Hilltop shopping centre.
Gradwell is a suburb of Taupo. To the south lies Rainbow Point to the north is Hilltop. Gradwell is the location of the Waipahihi Botanical Gardens.
Taupo CBD
Five Mile Bay is located on the east side of Lake Taupo, south of Wharewaka and north of Waitahanui on State Highway 1 just west of the Taupo Airport. It is a popular swimming/water skiing beach which gets very busy in summer. Five Mile Bay is one of three similar named bays along the lake shoreline, the others being Two Mile Bay and Three Mile Bay.

Climate
The climate of Taupo is cold and windy when compared to other parts of the North Island. It is due to the town being located inland which results in the accumulation of dry air causing severe frost during winter. However snowfall in Taupo is rare, although snow fell on August 2011 due to a prolonged cold period in New Zealand. The summer climate in Taupo is mild with maximum temperature reaching 23 degrees and with a minimum of 10 degrees.

Ben Ohau Road Cheese is a quirky cheese factory and outdoor tasting room in Twizel with a shipping container cheese factory and an outdoor seating area surrounded by beautiful scenery. We meet Matt, who is the Cheesemaker, and a really chatty and friendly Kiwi with a passion for making awesome cheese and sharing it with travellers. We try four different yummy New Zealand cheeses along with some homemade jellies and other condiments.
