Because we feel that you all who are here, this community, move mountains all that are working towards a better world

The mission of Move Mountains is to empower youth and engage them in the historic Sangre de Cristo land rights movement through a focus on local and global social justice issues. Through developing deeper understandings of art, resource preservation, and entrepreneurship, the heirs of this land will empower and activate their community.
The Issues
Social obstacles faced by the youth of San Luis are many for a small town. Since traditional ways of life have been eliminated by loss of land rights, youth are challenged by poverty, northbound drug trafficking, and alcoholism. Costilla County has the highest rates of diabetes in the state. The 2012 Census states 37.3% of residents of San Luis were below the poverty line; more than double the rate of Colorado. Despite these challenges, the youth involved in our program are achievers. 19 out of 21 surveyed youth at the culmination of Summer 2015 internships agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, “I have a plan for my future that makes me feel excited.”
Move Mountains focuses on transforming all forms of oppression by focusing on empowering individuals and learning how to best support their organizing efforts to make change. Move Mountains Artist Educators provide spaces for the youth to discuss and connect various forms and effects of oppression based on the experiences they have each day. Conversations with their elders, and wisdom from Move Mountains Executive Director, help youth to connect daily struggles in their lives such as mass incarceration, poverty, housing issues, racial justice, and gender justice back to their land and sovereignty.
Goals for the Summer
This summer, youth will partner with community and visiting artist educators to further their learning through individualized projects. They will focus their learning in the following project areas, surrounding the rich natural resources of San Luis: native herbs and plants, farming, acequias, renewable energy, ranching, community work, art, and ancestry. 20 youth will receive stipends as they learn and collaborate together to share their work at the Third Annual Arts and Sciences Festival at Santa Ana.
You can enable the Move Mountains Project to carry out the youth-driven vision of cultivating exceptional leadership through art, entrepreneurship, community action, and a respect for earth. As an investor you will be a crucial actor, facilitating our summer program and festival with youth leaders in San Luis, Colorado. The Sangre de Cristo Land Grant struggle has impeded heirs from accessing natural resources. Many years of destruction of indigenous cultures has led us to this vital moment in history. The Youth Leaders are called to connect with their elders, learn about their heritage, and preserve sacred knowledge and land to create a future in which all people in San Luis can thrive. What have we done?
Due to a lack of economic opportunities and structural poverty, young mentors are few and far between in the San Luis community; this distances the High School aged youth and the elders with the parents stretched in the middle. There is a need for young mentors and youth leadership. Combining strong, positive peer relationships with community-focused exchanges with elders functions to break cycles of violence at intersections of race, class, age and gender identities.

Lets Cruise | Welcome To Our Small Town USA | San Luis Valley, CO
Let me introduce you to our beautiful little town in the San Luis Valley area of southern Colorado! | My husband and I decided to take a little cruise the other day after our area got a blanket of snow the night before and I just knew it was the perfect time to make a little cruise video :) I Cruising around town and the back roads help me relax when I'm feeling anxious, especially in our little corner of the San Luis Valley. Always the further west you go the more beautiful the scenery and landscape. That morning there had been a lot more snow on the ground but by the time we left that afternoon a lot of it had melted. | It still looks wonderful, of course and I'm thrilled to share this video with everyone :)

Forever is Temporary: Generational Effects of Discrimination in the San Luis Valley
Event:
Lifeways Presentation Series: May 5th, 2016, Adams State University
Description:
Southern Colorado, which is predominately inhabited by Hispanic families, is one of the poorest regions in the state. In addition to unemployment rates ranging between 15-20% in some localities, the region reports comparatively high rates of drug abuse and crime. Frequently, outside observers associate high poverty rates, unemployment, and crime with complacent residents. However, a closer look at southern Colorado reveals that deep seeded discrimination has played a particularly pernicious role in the undoing of what were once thriving communities. In particular, over the course of the 20th century, discriminatory lending contributed to unequal opportunities for Hispanic farmers and ranchers. As a result, many local residents lost their land, and with it, a way of life. This presentation focuses on the recent settlement between the USDA and Hispanic farmers, also known as Garcia v. Vilsack, as a means of shedding light on the role of discrimination in driving unequal opportunities in southern Colorado.
Mother of God Crying in Colorado! Mother Cabrini Shrine. Sept 10, 2017
May Peace Be on Earth and in Your Hearts!
While All the world is watching TV about Hurricane Irma's 5 days destruction path, category 4 storm just hitting Florida hours ago, State Texas recovering from another Hurricane, Fires in California, Wyoming and other states making Colorado mountains vanish in the haze all last week, and devastating Earthquake in Mexico... Oh Lord.. So much Pain in this World now..
I went to meditate to one of my favorite places in Colorado, Mother Cabrini Shrine.
When I spend some time meditating with Mother Cabrini in the main Chapel, I went downstairs in the garden, to drink some water, where I couldn't believe my eyes...
See for yourself... St Mary's statue looks like crying...
I took some pictures too...

2019 - R And R Market
R&R Market is the oldest continuously operated business in the State of Colorado, dating from its establishment in 1857 in the town of San Luis by Costilla County pioneer Dario Gallegos. The building was partially rebuilt after fires in 1895 and 1947 and is a contributing building to the San Luis de la Culebra National Historic District, listed under themes of Hispano history, San Luis history, early trade and commerce, and politics. The R&R Market is a classic example of a family owned “legacy business” that is integral to the identity and economic viability of the community. While there is no immediate danger of the building being demolished, its closure as a business would not only end an important part of history in the State, but it would deprive this small, isolated community of its source of healthy food. San Luis and the surrounding villages can be considered a food desert, with major outlets being 16 or even 40 miles away. R&R Market is an important heritage site and, on a practical level, a save will mean retention of a much-needed source of healthy food for the community.
The building housing R&R Market was originally constructed of adobe bricks and has subsequently been modified with a combination of concrete block, plaster and stucco construction. The ground floor is the market and the upstairs includes rental units which were once part of a hotel. The original mercantile business was opened by Dario Gallegos in May, 1857, in a building 20 feet wide by 40 feet long, made of 25-inch adobe walls, with a foundation of rock with mud mortar. Today the building is a beautiful two-story log and stucco building in the Territorial Adobe style common to many plaza buildings that date back hundreds of years. The building retains its dignity and beauty despite cracks in the stucco, red roof tiles that are crumbling, and water damage to soffits.
R&R Market still operates as a general store with groceries, hardware and other merchandise. It is owned and operated by Felix and Claudio Romero, who are descendants of the original owners and are now in their 70s. The Romero’s have 5-full time employees and support area farmers by selling local produce and meats. The site has received much state and national attention, including a feature article in 2017 in the New York Times, that highlighted the challenge of family business transitions in a struggling rural economy. In San Luis this means finding a buyer who can qualify for a loan, which is a challenge. Costilla County Commissioners, the Town of San Luis, and the Costilla County Economic Development Council stand ready to partner with CPI to save both the business and its use as a general store and food market. In some ways, there may be no more historic site in Colorado than the R&R Market in San Luis.
