Steam Yacht Gondola - Coniston Water - 01/06/17
The steam yacht Gondola is a rebuilt Victorian, screw-propelled, steam-powered passenger vessel on Coniston Water, England. Originally launched in 1859, she was built for the steamer service carrying passengers from the Furness Railway and from the Coniston Railway. She was in commercial service until 1936 when she was retired, being converted to a houseboat in 1946. In 1979, she was rebuilt and is now back in regular public service operated by the National Trust.

End of a lovely weekend, with a long walk down the side of Lake Coniston, starting at Waterhead and walking to Sunny Bank to discover the ferry doesn't operate until 1st April and then walked back to Waterhead. Thankfully it was gorgeous weather.

Coniston Water - SY Gondola - steamboat tourist trip
Steam Yacht SY Gondola. On Coniston Water in the English Lake District; as seen in April 2014. This is a well-restored steamboat passenger launch. Very relaxing.
Steam Launch Engine.
Twin cylinder steam engine 2.5 bore and stroke. Three drum water tube boiler supplies steam at up 250 psi, although 50 psi will suffice for a normal cruising speed of 5mph. In this video the engine is just idling while the boat is tied up . The exhaust steam from the engine passes to a condenser outside the hull and returns to the feed water tank via the air pump (seen on the left of the engine) which also produces a vacuum in the condenser, thereby making the engine more efficient. At cruising speed the vacuum is normally 25 of mercury, which is equivalent to a suck on the engine of around 12 psi. The steam pump on the other side of the engine, apart from supplying feed water to the boiler, can also be used for bilge pumping, filling the wet ashpan or transferring water to and from the reserve feed tank.
