The volcano of Nisyros is the most important attraction. It has a total of five craters with the largest Stephen, diameter of 260 meters and a depth of 30 meters. The five volcanic craters form the plateau of the pit, which was created by a volcanic eruption in 1552. The final crater, the Little Polyvotis, created in 1887, when the last (til now) Hydrothermal eruption. The volcano of Nisyros is active and because of the easy accessibility to the craters, they are visited every year by many thousands of people including specialized scientists. The smell of sulfur in the area is strong but it is a unique landscape.

VOLCANO IN NISYROS ISLAND GREECE
The Volcano of Nisyros, Greece: Nisyros is the youngest of the large volcanic centers in Greece and is one of the active volcanoes in Greece. The volcano is 160,000 years old, while the youngest, prehistoric rock formations are 15,000 years old and cover the entire island. The island is composed of volcanic rock formations, with swelled elevations that were formed by previous volcanic activities. Thus a major part of the island's soil is volcanic and fertile. The various rock formations are even used for the construction of various buildings such as the Paleokastro and the bell tower of the Church of Saint John The Theologian just outside Nikea. The base of the island has been formed by lava. The rocks are covered by pyro-clastic deposits and volcanic mud. Two possible eruptions took place several millennia ago, around 25,000 years back. A large depression occurred in the eastern part half way across the island. The western crown of this depression forms the highest peak of the island. The peak of Saint John is in the eastern part of the depression and is about 100m above sea level. In 1956, schisms emitting smoke were noted in the ground next to the western and southern sides of Ramnos. In 1872, an eruption occurred that was accompanied by earthquakes, backfiring and red flames. Ash and other elements erupted and covered the ground of Ramnos. During the eruprion of 1872, a crater of about 6 to 7 meters was formed and ash and mud spewed out. The ground of the area of Lakki and Ramnos were transformed into a lake with hot salty water, the water that came me out of the crater. The most recent violent eruption was in 1888 which formed a cylindrical aqueduct of volcanic elements with a diameter of at least 25 meters. The largets crater of the volcano named Polivotis, has a diameter of 260m and 30m depth. Another 5 younger craters in the region, the largest of which is Stefanos with a diameter of 30m and a 30m depth, are also areas of special interest for the tourists

Independent tourists arriving at the little Oasis cafe under the shade of the few trees close to the crater.
People who have arrived long before the the onslaught of day-trip tourist coaches start arriving at 11-30 am. each day.
They are making their way down the crumbling and slippery path to the bottom of the crater.
There is a 3 Euro ( £ 3 ) entrance fee to the crater.
Fortunately not some private landowner cashing in, this money goes towards funding community projects for the people of the island, restoring ancient chapels, stone walls, roads, etc.
Nisyros is a small strato-volcano in the south eastern Aegean sea, 20Km south of Kos.
The island is approximately 8 Km diameter.
The entire centre of the island is one big caldera crater.
Stefanos crater is the largest of five hydro-thermal craters in the western end of the caldera, approximately 1000 feet diameter and 150 feet deep.
The walls are mainly crumbly white pumice and fine silt, mixed with smashed rocks of lava,
all highly caustic, nothing grows in there.
On the floor in the centre are large pools of continuously boiling lakes of water and mud,
conveniently roped off to stop tourists falling in.
Scattered around the edges of the flat floor of the crater are hot gas vent outlets, pumping out steam and Hydrogen sulfide gas, the vent outlets are surrounded by condensed crystals of Sulfur.
This was once a sulfur mine back in the 1850's.
The name Stefanos was adopted from the name of the owner of the Sulfur mine.

Nisyros Video Map:
The Volcanic Museum is located in Nikia in a privileged position on the rim of the caldera, with a panoramic view of the interior of the caldera and the volcano. In this traditional village there was an abandoned school which was restored and now houses the museum. A section of the museum contains the sections for information observation and experiments. In this area there are collections of all Nisyros' rock types and those of other active volcanoes, which visitors can observe macroscopically and microscopically. The museum also provides simulation of volcanic eruptions both virtually and in experimental devices designed for younger guests.

The walls of the crater play white, yellow, orange, feel like ... in a volcano. The bottom of the crater is full of vents, holes in the ground where bubbling gas escapes, there are bright yellow sulfur crystals. Stefanos is allegedly not older than 4000 years, it is about 300 meters wide and 27 meters deep. Volcanic activity in the caldera has been freatical in recent centuries, the lava eruption experienced by Nisyros for the last time about 20,000 years ago. In 1871, after the earthquake, the Megalos Polyvotis and Alexandros craters opened and the island covered the fog of escaping steam. A similar eruption was repeated six years later, and the crater Mikros Polyvotis created the accompanying landslides.
