The Georgian Military Road:
The Georgian Military Road is the historic name for a major route through the Caucasus from Georgia to Russia. Alternative routes across the mountains include the Ossetian Military Road and the Transkam.
Route: The Georgian Military Road (ca. 212 kilometres long) runs between Tbilisi (Georgia) and Vladikavkaz (Russia) and follows the traditional route used by invaders and traders throughout the ages. From Vladikavkaz, the road stretches southwards up the valley of the Terek before passing through the Darial Gorge (which marks the border between Russia and Georgia). It then passes Mount Kazbek and Gergeti Trinity Church before heading south-west through the Georgian region of Khevi to the Jvari Pass, where it reaches its maximum altitude of 2,379 meters. Not long after the pass the road passes the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, a large concrete monument built in 1983 to commemorate relations between the two countries and the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk. The road then turns south-eastwards, following the Tetri Aragvi River through Mtiuleti down to the town of Pasanauri, before heading due south. It then passes below the walls of the medieval fortress of Ananuri before cutting across the wide floodplain of the Tetri Aragvi down to a point just north of Georgia's historic capital, Mtskheta, where it merges into Georgia's main East-West highway (the E60). In this guise, the Georgian Military Road technically continues along the right bank of the Kura (Mtkvari) River before reaching nearby Tbilisi. The 1914 edition of Baedeker's Russia describes the Georgian Military Road as 'one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the world', and mentions the fact that, as early as its date of publication, 'motor omnibuses of the Société française des transports automobiles du Caucase ply regularly from April 15 to Oct. 15th, the journey in 10 hrs.'The importance of the Georgian Military Road as a through route was diminished in recent years, primarily due to delays at the border crossing between Russia and Georgia, natural disasters such as landslides, and the outright closure of the border crossing by Russia in 2006.Since 2013, however, when Russia finally agreed to re-open its side of the border as a result of Armenian demands, the road has once again become an important transport artery, mainly for trailer lorries linking Armenia and Russia.Various restrictions, however, remained (and still remain) in place, particularly for Georgian citizens, but by 2013 a representative of the Russian side of the border could tell the Interfax news agency that around 3 million people had passed through the Kazbegi-Verkhni Lars customs checkpoint.Currently (2015), the Georgian end of the Road is frequently clogged with lorries, apparently due to the length of time needed for vehicles transiting Georgia to be admitted into Russia.Wikipedia
A Day Trip from Tbilisi to Kazbegi
As we had 5 days in the beautiful city of Tbilisi we thought we should try to see at least a small part of what else Georgia has to offer. There are a lot of options but we decided to head into the mountains and visit the Kazbegi National Park. We could have taken a tour but we decided to get a local marshrutka van and see how we go. We ended up having an amazing day and had plenty of time to do the hike up to Gergeti Trinity Church which had some really spectacular scenery. A shout out to Emily of Wander-lush.org who sets out the best path to take in her fantastic blog. Thanks Emily you made our life a lot easier !
Our last day was then spent exploring the streets of Tbilisi Georgia, catching an incredible sunset from Narikala Fortress and having one final fill of Georgia food and wine. We have fallen in love with Georgia and its people and we look forward to returning one day.
We hope to continue to share our journey along the Silk Road and to countries that may not appear on everyones list of travel destinations. We are new to You Tube so if you have any positive suggestions on how to improve the quality of our vlog please drop us a line in the comment section.
Thanks again to musicbed.com for your great music library.

Georgia 2018 - Day 5: Sameba & Mtskheta - Old Capital Day Trip
2018-02-28 We went to Sameba or the Holy Trinity Cathedral ( on our fifth day in Tbilisi and bought religious relics from the store in the cathedral. Luckily there was an orthodox priest who blessed the items we both. It felt really good when he blessed us and the items we bought.
We then went to City Sightseeing Tbilisi ( in Freedom Square and booked the Mtskheta - Old Capital Day Trip which starts at 3PM. The trip only costs GEL 40 (approx.. USD 16) and lasts for more or less 4 hours since the location is less than an hour away from the city centre Tbilisi. This trip was like a pilgrimage for us because we got to visit churches that has great significance to the life of Christ and the growth of Christianity.
First stop of the trip was Jvari Monastery ( or the Church of the Cross; where St. Nino erected a large wooden cross on the site of a pagan temple. The cross was reportedly able to work miracles and therefore drew pilgrims from all over the Caucasus. A small church was erected over the remnants of the wooden cross.
Second Stop was Svetitskhoveli Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Living Pillar ( It is known as the the burial place of Saint Sidonia holding Christ's Robe/Mantle and the tomb place of Georgian Kings. I felt emotional and blessed to personally see and touch (the glass frame) of the piece of the cross where Christ was crucified. Svetitskhoveli was not only the site of the coronation of the Georgian kings but also served as their burial place.
Next stop was the Samtavro Transfiguration Orthodox Church and Nunnery of St. Nino in Mtskheta where the famous Georgian Monk Gabriel ( was buried as well as the first Christian royal couple - King Mirian and Queen Nana. With many miracles ascribed to Holy Father St. Gabriel, Confessor and Fool for Christ, Gabriel's grave at Mtskheta has attracted an increasing number of pilgrims.
The trip ended in another wine degustation and souvenir shopping. We decided to get another round of Kachapuri and pork barbeque from Machakhela-Samikitno Restaurant.
Historical City of Mtskheta (მცხეთა), Georgia
Mtskheta holds great importance to Georgia, being home to significant medieval monuments of Georgian christianity, such as the Samtavro Church (Place of the Ruler), Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (from the 11th century) and Jvari Monastery (6th century). Together, they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Historical Monuments of Mtskheta.
It is is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and was the site of Georgia's adoption of Christianity in 334. Today, it is the headquarters of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Mtskheta is a breathtaking ancient city, not to be missed when you are in Georgia, particularly, if you're interested in Georgian history.
To get to Mtskheta (20km from Georgia's capital, Tbilisi), you can take the marshrutka from Didube Bus Station, where there is a lively market and the stall owners are friendly and welcoming. It makes an interesting stop to see Georgian daily life.

Georgia Day#2 - The One With All The Snow
Georgia was earlier a part of Russia but is now a separate country. From its green valleys spread with vineyards to its old churches and watchtowers perched in fantastic mountain scenery, Georgia (Saqartvelo, საქართველო) is one of the most beautiful countries on earth and a marvelous canvas for walkers, horse riders, cyclists, skiers, rafters and travelers of every kind. Equally special are its proud, high-spirited, cultured people: Georgia claims to be the birthplace of wine, and this is a place where guests are considered blessings and hospitality is the very stuff of life.
A deeply complicated history has given Georgia a wonderful heritage of architecture and arts, from cave cities to ancient cathedrals to the inimitable canvases of Pirosmani. Tbilisi, the capital, is still redolent of an age-old Eurasian crossroads. But this is also a country moving forward in the 21st century, with spectacular contemporary buildings, a minimal crime rate and ever-improving facilities for the visitors who are a growing part of its future.

Next, I visited Mtzheta, a brilliant cultural city, which was the capital of Georgia until I moved the capital to Tbilisi in the 11th century. The first impression of Mtzheta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was like a fairy tale land. The Zubari Monastery, overlooking Mtskheta, is a must for pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It was used as a military base during the reign of the Soviet Union, and public access was forbidden, but after the independence, it restored the function of the Georgian Orthodox Church. It is now famous for being one of the most popular attractions for photographers in Georgia. It is so beautiful. It's so amazing. It's so peaceful. It is a beautiful scenery. A week in Tbilisi, I went to Mount Kazbegi yesterday and it was beautiful. Cities in Georgia are beautiful and peaceful. In the peaceful landscape in the center of Mtsheta, Is a historical place where the Orthodox Church of Georgia was introduced, embracing Christianity in the 4th century. It is the Sveti Tithe Veli Basilica, which is believed to have been preserved at the time when Jesus Christ was crucified and executed. I decided to meet a woman here who has been guiding the cathedral for 40 years. I was going to wear black clothes from head to toe. Hi. I am the guide. The cathedral journey with a 40-year career guide in unusual atmosphere was expected. The height of the Sveti Tzhovelli cathedral is 54 meters. This cathedral is made of rock salt and stone. There was a window in the secret room on the top, which was used to confirm that the enemy was coming. I quickly fell into the unique, pleasant explanation of the musical actor. In the early 4th century, the original Georgian Orthodox cathedral was destroyed by the invasion of Persia and Russia, and the existing cathedral was rebuilt as a dome in the 11th century. In the 4th century, Georgian 'Miriam no I' and 'Nuno' converted to the Georgian Orthodox Church, and 'Miriam no Kang' was the King of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Mtsheta is called the second Jerusalem. The reason is that Jesus is dressed here as a robe....

A symbol of Tbilisi, Georgia's mother statue, overlooking the city, is guarding a wine glass in the left hand with a sword in the right hand. In Georgia, the wine seemed to tell us that it is a proud history and life in Georgia that must be followed. Tbilisi has become the capital of Georgia since the 11th century. The landmark Peace Bridge contains the aspirations of peace loving Georgians. The flowers and grape vines, which can be easily seen from anywhere in Tbilisi, are a cool shade for travelers. I stepped in to take a closer look at the city that gave me the first impression of being friendly and relaxed. As we walk down the street, people gather in a small square in front of the building. Old Town Clock Tower. It is the mascot of Old Tbilisi. Why wait here? Every hour an angel comes out from the upper balcony. It's a very famous building in Tbilisi. Finally, an angel who waited for a lot of people showed up. I feel like I'm at a news conference filled with tension when I see people holding breath and killing angels. A messy angel who goes out of his way to turn back, without any hesitation, to hurt his servant. I feel sorry for the quick departure of the angel, but it is a nice day to meet an angel on the first road. Old Tbilisi Street is also a good place for street musicians. It was very impressive to see him dancing in peace with the joyful piano performance. I'm playing the feel and emotion of Old Tbilisi. I think music is a part of life that can not be removed from everyone's lives. Music is a part of life. In Old Tbilisi alley, Seven-year-old grandfather plays a life. On the streets of Tbilisi you can always meet music and dance. Georgians say they can not imagine a world without dancing and wine. Holding a knife and a shield, this dancing, like a knife fight, is a typical Georgian dance called 'Mithi Lurie'. I wonder if the dancers will be hurt all the time. The next day, I found a little special place. Hello, this way. This is the Georgia National Ballet. I was curious about the life of Georgia people who love dance and music. More than 50 of the best dancers selected throughout Georgia were practicing for the show. It's been four years since I became a member of the National Ballet, and I think it's probably since I was 12. The violent and dazzling dance begins again. Dance 'Meituururi' to attack and defend your opponent with all your strength. For a short time, the dancers are sweating swiftly. It's okay, okay. It's okay, but everyone seems exhausted. I love this dance. This is our life. Dance is our country, it is our history. We live this way with our tradition...

Stalin Museum,Gori,Georgia - To the Caspian Sea ep15 - Travel vlog calatorii tourism video HD
The Joseph Stalin Museum is a museum in Gori, Georgia dedicated to the life of Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, who was born in Gori. The Museum retains its Soviet-era characteristics.
Enshrined within a Greco-Italianate pavilion is a small wooden hut, in which Stalin was born in 1878 and spent his first four years. The small hut has two rooms on the ground floor. Stalin's father Vissarion Jughashvili, a local shoemaker, rented the one room on the left hand side of the building and maintained a workshop in the basement.
To one side of the museum is Stalin's personal railway carriage. The green Pullman carriage, which is armour plated and weighs 83 tons, was used by Stalin from 1941 onwards, including his attendances at the Yalta Conference and the Tehran Conference. It was sent to the museum on being recovered from the railway yards at Rostov-on-Don in 1985.

The museum was established in 1988 by the well-known Georgian archaeologist, head of the Tbilisi archaeological expedition, Rostom Abramishvili (1924-1996). The museum houses monuments, discovered by the archaeological excavations in Tbilisi. The chronological frames of the collections are from the V c. B.C. up to the feudal times. In the museum is kept the earliest in the world samples of tinned bronze objects from the Delisi (Tbilisi district) dwelling, dated as 4.000 years old; bronze buckle inlayed with silver decorated with horse rider image; inventory of the Treli royal burials (XII-VIII-VII c.c. B.C.).

THE STALIN MUSEUM: WHY WE LEFT IMMEDIATELY (Uplistsikhe and Gori, Georgia)
1/10/19 - Gori and Uplistikhe, Georgia - We took a day trip from Tbilisi and visited the town of Gori, Stalin’s birthplace, not too far away. From here we went to a cave town that has thousands of years of history called Uplistikhe, which was fascinating. Back in Gori we walked through Stalin Park to the Stalin museum but after looking inside decided that we didn’t want to support it. We walked up to Gori Fortress instead to get a view over the surrounding areas and to the beautiful mountains in the north and finally headed back to Tbilisi.
