Agora – Stoa Of Attalos Ii – Athens – Audio Guide – MyWoWo Travel App
The famous Stoa of Attalos II, the enormously striking colonnaded edifice that closes off the Agora, was built between 159 and 148 BC by King Attalos II of Pergamon as a gift to the city where he was educated. What you see today, however, is a reconstruction by American archeologists, made between 1953 and 1956.
The stoa, or portico, was an architectural structure widely used in Athens, and in the Classical Period there were about half a dozen in the Agora alone. They offered protection from the sun and rain, shops opened in them, and people used to meet there and discuss politics. Unfortunately, little remains of the oldest ones, but it was beneath those porticos that philosophers such as Socrates and Plato exchanged ideas with each other and with their followers, and it was here that Socrates was put on trial.
None of the porticos of Classical Athens, however, rivalled this one in size: 116 meters long, 20 meters wide, 13 meters high, with two floors, typical of the city of Pergamon, in Jordan, and of the Hellenistic Period, although even the Classical stoas often featured a mix of Doric and Ionic styles, as you can see here...

Athens 2 - Stoa of Attalos
The Stoa of Attalos is an architectural masterpiece of public space which has not been surpassed to this day.
Architectural and visual beauty at its finest, the stoa provides a wind tunnel that produces a cool flow of air that is a respite from the outside heat.
Built around 150 BC, the stoa was in use until it was partially destroyed in 267 AD. Used as a fortification wall for many centuries, the stoa of Attalos was finally reconstructed between 1952 and 1956.

The Stoa of Attalos Museum in Athens Greece,
The Stoa of Attalos is an impressive building in the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora in Athens. Originally constructed from 159 BC till 138 BC, this building was donated to the Athenians by Attalus II, king of Pergamus, and his wife, as stated in a sign outside the Stoa. The building had two floors and two lines of marbles columns on the ground floor.
The Stoa of Attalos served as a modern shopping centre, with 21 shops along the two floors. In fact, it was the first and largest shopping centre of the antiquity and became the main meeting point of the Athenians that period. It was destroyed during a siege in 267 AD and was restored in 1953-1956 by the American School of Classical Studies to host an archaeological museum.
The Archaeological Museum of the Stoa of Attalos hosts findings that were excavated in the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora. These findings include marbles statues, parts of columns, coins, ceramic vases, items of daily use, reliefs, weapons and other pieces that date from the Neolithic times till the 6th century AD.
Worth to observe are a giant body state of god Apollo, the large statue of a female figure (goddess or queen), the water clock (clepsydra) used to measure time in the courthouses, the tomb of a little girl that dates from the Geometric times and a bronze Spartian shield that the Athenians took as a war prize in the Battle of Sfaktiria (425 BC). Recently (May 2012) the restoration works on the second floor finished and the museum expanded in both floors.
Address: Adrianou st, 24, Thisseio, Athens.

Athens (2) - Stoa of Attalos (1)
The Stoa of Attalos in an incredible building, reconstructed between 1952 and 1956. The original structure was built in the 2nd Century BC.
The one thing that is powerfully prevalent when visiting the stoa is how the structure makes a wind tunnel and thus a respite from the blazing heat outside. It was also clearly a place where people walked, sat and talked in ancient times. It really is a stunning piece of architecture and proof, if anything, that we have not evolved in that field at all in more than 2000 years. The acoustics are also incredible, attributing even higher levels of genius on the architects.

Τhe Agora museum is housed in the Stoa of Attalos, a reconstructed building of around 150 B.C. The characteristic feature of the museum is that the exhibits are all closely connected with the Athenian Democracy, as the Agora was the focus of the city's public life.
The Stoa of Attalos was discovered during the excavations carried out by the Greek Archaeological Society between 1859 and 1902. In 1953-56 it was reconstructed in order to house the finds from the excavations at the Agora. In 1957 the Greek state assumed responsibility for the administration and security of the museum and the archaeological site.

Royal Stoa aka Stoa Basileios (Athens, Greece)
The Royal Stoa aka Stoa Basileios in Athens.
Stoa Basileios (Greek: στοά βασίλειος), meaning Royal Stoa, was a stoa constructed in Ancient Athens in the 6th century BC and substantially altered in the 5th century BC. It was located in the northwest corner (known as the Herms because of the great number of Herma set up there) of the Athenian Agora.
The Royal Stoa was the headquarters of the King Archon and of the Areopagos council (in charge of religious affairs and crime). A statue of Themis (representing Justice) stood in front of the building. Copies of some of the city laws were kept in the Stoa.
The front of the building was where Socrates met Euthyphro and had the conversation which Plato recreated in his Euthyphro. It was where Socrates was formally charged with impiety by Meletus. Historians believe that the voting for ostracism, a political practice in Athens during the 5th century BC, may have taken place in front of the Royal Stoa.
