STOWE ENGLAND
EE VISIT JULY 2000 Stowe is the name shared by an ancient village, country house and school (Stowe School) in Buckinghamshire in England. It is situated about two miles north-northeast of Buckingham. The breathtaking landscape gardens, including its many monuments, were acquired by the National Trust in 1990 and are open to the public. The National Trust are currently overseeing a complete restoration program of the grounds, temples and follies. The Village Originally the village of Stowe was built in the Anglo Saxon period. Its name refers to an ancient holy place of some eminence with the local community. The village remained in place up until 1712 when the 31 houses of the village were demolished to make way for the extensive gardens of the manor house. Stowe House In the early 17th century, the manor of Stowe was completely rebuilt by Sir Richard Temple, from the old medieval stronghold to what is now the core of the impressive mansion for which the area is known today. Having been redesigned and perfected subsequently over the years, the whole front is now 916 feet in length and is a breathtaking sight as you approach from the direction of Buckingham. 'Capability' Brown (1716-1783):
He authored over 170 gardens surrounding the finest country houses and estates in Britain, such as Stowe, Croome Court , Blenheim Palace, Warwick Castle, Harewood House, Bowood House, Milton Abbey (and nearby Milton Abbas village), partially Kew Gardens.
His style: naturalistic compositions of smooth undulating grass running straight to the house, clumps, belts and scattering of trees with serpentine lakes, small rivers... His 'landscaped/grammatical garden' swept away almost all the remnants of previous formally patterned styles.
His critique: Russell Page accused him of 'encouraging his wealthy clients to tear out their splendid formal gardens and replace them with his facile compositions of grass, tree clumps and rather shapeless pools and lakes'. Conversely, Sir William Chambers and others complained that Brown's grounds differ very little from common fields, so closely is nature copied in most of them.
After him: A reaction against the smooth blandness of Brown's landscapes was inevitable. During the nineteenth century he was widely criticised, but during the twentieth century his popularity returned. Dorothy Stroud wrote the first full monograph on Capability Brown, fleshing out the generic attributions with documentation from country house estate offices.
